Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

Thus far my only major complaint with BC is that not all the games are sold digitally. Both Bethesda and EA seems to get along well with MS recently, why can't I buy Rage, Doom 3 BFG Edition, and Mass Effect 2/3 digitally?

I believe any multi disc game for 360 has yet to go digital and that is what the roadblock is

Well Doom 3, Rage, and Mass Effect 2 and 3 are all multi-disc games. In order to offer them as BC, they had to be packaged together into a single download. You put in one disc and it downloads the whole thing. You can even get Mass Effect 2 and 3 fully digital as part of EA Access, you just can't buy them on their own. I'm far from an expert, but it seems like for those games, most of the work is done, and they would just have to decide to let people buy them.

Its probably because of this. :)

Because EA Access is your license that's all it needs to check for.

Since you can't buy it digital yet, you can't play it digitally because you don't actually have a license. Why isn't it for sale yet? I have to assume they're running into issues getting it up and running on an actual xbox 360. Remember the emulator is removing the need for multiple discs, I'm guessing they will push out an update to the xbox 360 OS to handle it the same way the emulator does before they put the games up for sale.

I guess technically they should be able to put it up for XB1 only but then they might run into licensing issues (having 2 licenses for the same game) when they do eventually make it available on the 360 - which they will so it can go on GWG etc.

(Note that I'm just guessing and have no idea why it's not, but it makes a little sense to me, at least)

I just posted these photos on Twitter, and judging from my phone no one else has seen these? Seem to be Walmart exclusive or test for some reason:

I think I remember seeing stickers a while back, but full-on banners is a new thing, at least for me. Interesting. Pretty smart approach. Nintendo did something similar with GBA games and I think some DS games, but it was with back-of-the-box badges. Maybe a couple front-cover wedges too?

Just went to Walmart..for science...

Fallout 3 and New Vegas had the banner saying plays on Xbox One

Doom 3BFG had the Xbox one green case look with the poster. Almost got it but I fear for the creases they had to have put in that poster

How is it blurring the lines? It is a clear fact that the game will play on the Xbox 360 or the Xbox One.

I saw some people on Twitter saying it was dishonest because people might think it's an XB1-native game. I think that is a reach. My argument is that if you are the type of customer who is going to give a shit whether the game runs in 720p or 900p, you'll damn well already know that Fallout 3 is an Xbox 360 title.

But... if it was a native Xbox One game, it wouldn't run on Xbox 360...
Those people are just looking for something to be pissed by.

Yeah, I dunno. I think you're right and it says "Xbox 360 game will download to Xbox One console. Performance same as Xbox 360 experience" on the lower left of the Doom 3 BFG cover. Looks the same on Fallout 3.

Seems likely.

should help bring in new customers and revenue, which will only help with continued BC support. it's also pretty clear what you're getting.

so of course console warriors are outraged.

It's the XB1 packaging of a 360 game that bugs me. I'd be disappointed expecting a native XB1 game only to find out it's an emulated 360 title.

It'd be worse if it was a 360 title I already owned, and was excited to buy a better version for the XB1. I think it's confusing for consumers.

It says right on the cover that it is the same performance as the 360.

I agree, it's confusing that they put "XBOX ONE" first at the top and use the darker XB1 green for the banner. That to me does imply it's made for the XB1 and not everyone reads the fine print.

The other approach where it just has the "Plays on XBOX ONE" sticker seems more appropriate.

Wow that's absolutely crazy. Not sure how I feel about blurring the line like that.
How the hell is this blurring the line. It works on both consoles - just as advertised. Heck, I think they even put a disclaimer on the front cover.

These look very nice. I hope other BC games will follow, would definitely pick up Red Dead retail at that price point.

If Microsoft doesn't do Xbox BC with Xbox One, I hope they announce some sort of Xbox Collection at E3 ala Rare Replay or Halo MCC.

Ninja Gaiden, JSRF, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Otogi all on one disc with achievements, frame rate improvements etc.

I was expecting more of them this year to be honest :/

Why not release an Xbox One version of "Gears of War Collection"?

"Rockstar Collection", "Mass Effect Collection", "Fallout Duo Pack", "Sonic Collection",

Release them for $20-$60, it's virtually no additional work and free money for publishers and MS, and puts the games into circulation again. I'd even buy a few of them again once they're cheaper just to have them all on one disc.

If it encourages more publisher support for backwards compatibility then I'm all for it.

Hey, Microsoft is my publisher, I wish them the best. But I still feel this is a bit shady.

hope, hope we see more of these, this can replace the garbage games we find at walgreens/gas stations during the holidays with legit great games.

I don't understand why someone would think it's an Xbox one native game when it runs on 360. Hell they will probably triple up on this concept with whatever Scorpio is called, heh.

Why you buying games at a gas station?

not me!, but but during the holidays your could find 360, Wii, PS2 games there, for grandmas, grandpas. Kohls without a doubt will have a video game section up near the checkout line right now, or come black friday.

Doom 3 is actually just on one disc.
Though, I guess the problem with Doom is that it's a compilation. Have any other compilation discs been sold as one title on Xbox's storefront?

On X1? Borderlands Collection is one title and downloads both BL2 and Pre-Sequel.
On X360? Fable had a trilogy on XBL for a limited time, which was basically a launcher that would let you download the three games separately. Black Ops 3 is probably the same considering it includes the first Black Ops for free.

Which makes me think, why are they not selling the games as one launcher that lets you download the separate discs as separate downloads? Like a "Mass Effect 2 Package" and "Lost Odyssey Package".

My guess is games with more than one disc aren't packaged as GOD packages at all and are just the raw game files ran in the Xbox One emulator preventing them from working as 360 digital releases.

Also guys you're all wrong - it's Black Ops 2 today :)

Today is the day. Something on my wishlist will .... likely not be added...
