I really think Overwatch deserves GoTY over Uncharted 4. It's historically unlikely.

Zero fucks given here. A win in a specific genre category makes it GOTY amongst its peers, which basically is as good as it gets. Broadening it out to all games basically invites people to choose based on genre preference/prejudice and whatever the flavour du jour is.

All awards are basically bullshit, but this one is especially bullshiitty as its got the most hazily defined criterion for success.

Personally I think the only way to even semi-accurately derive an overall "best" is to see which of the genre winners has the most supporting noms for technical and artistic excellence.

A lot of games media people have been talking about it on podcasts for a long time. It's clearly got legs with them, so I wouldn't count it out.

Destiny/ Rise of Iron has better gunplay.

Overwatch is most likely going to be my GOTY, but I could easily see Inside pull off a dark horse win. Deservingly so, too.

I think the OP showed an interesting fact in that no matter how well received or game changing a multiplayer game may be it seems like it'll always lose to a good single player game.

MP is a tough market to crack, not just for reviewers but for the general market as well. Seems very boom or bust. Overwatch was obviously a huge hit, but look at something like Titanfall 2. Tons of critical acclaim, might even get some goty buzz from certain outlets, but who knows if that community will have legs, probably in part because the market is over saturated and people stick with what they like. It is a good point, I'm just not sure how much it is going to affect Overwatch. That seems like one game that has broken through with both consumers and critics.

Overwatch is easily game of the year, so if it doesn't win, the entire VGAs will be exposed as a complete farce.

People think UC4 will win, really? It was mediocre at best... really boring at worst.

Doom would be a fair choice. Best single player FPS campaign in a long, long time. Amazing gameplay, long campaign and amazing weapons. OW would be okay as well!
Opinions how do they work?
Edit; just to be clear I wouldn't give it to uc4 either.

I don't see the problem if it wins multiplayer shooter of the year. For what it's worth it's definitely my game of the year and one of my favorite games of all time.

Overwatch? more like Overrated!

DOOM is the real GOTY

I love Overwatch and have sunk hours into it, but as someone who grew up on Doom 2 and doesn't have a lot of time to play games any more, Doom gave me an unreasonable amount of joy. That game is a damn gem and I love everything about it.

It's like you take all the fun parts of U2 and remove them and replace them with climbing and family drama.

Yeah the "family drama" was what slightly interested me in the game in the first place bc the "fun parts" of the prior three Uncharted games really sucked. But I don't care enough for this franchise to spend $60 with it ever again.

A bare bones game released at 69.999 euros on consoles, with microtransations bullshit and almost no modes to play will win GOTY?

I can see the gaming press doing it. Its blizzard and blizzard is god...

Most Overrated game of the year is the title this should get not GOTY.

I can see that. Haven't played either games but uncharted seems to be a very good sequel whereas overwatch seems to have a lot of attention to a new genre on the console platform.

Destiny didn't win because it was generally recieved as a huge disappointment, not because it was multiplayer. And SSB didn't win because it was stuck in the Wii U ghetto.

Titanfall's MP is on another level in terms of fast food gaming. The games movement is so fun I could just jump around not shooting anything and still have a blast.

I think one of the drawbacks of MP games in regards to awards is how they become part of your everyday life. Loses and wins are everyday occurence. There's no endgame. There's no real catharsis (there is, just not one singular moment). You can play it over and over again and have fun and memorable moments, but when you look back at the year and pick a moment, you won't pick from something that's always there, but something that sticks out.

I recall a lof of people in 2013 voting for TLoU despite obsessing over Dota 2 and saying how it's their favorite game of all time. At least the above is how I rationalize this.

With that said I can see Overwatch bucking the trend.

I agree. I like Uncharted, but Overwatch has been my most played game of the year and has overall been fantastic. It truly deserves it.

Uncharted is a game we play for a good 10 hours then will never pick back up again unless there is a 5th one coming out and we are familiarizing ourselves come time for the game.

Uncharted 4 will win and rightfully so. It's an expertly crafted game and the critics matches its sales.

Overwatch is godly too. I play it daily for several hours. But there is no denying that a 60 dollar game like Overwatch with the content it has is way too much.

Overwatch has legitimate criticisms, but bare bones isn't one of them.

This is the first year in a while where I've played multiple games I'd legitimately call GOTY candidates.

Doom
Stardew Valley
Overwatch
Uncharted 4

Really loved all of them. I'd be fine drawing any of them out of a hat.

overwatch should win. games like uncharted 4 and doom were enjoyable but definitely not worth GOTY. uncharted 4 was basically just a visual upgrade. the gameplay offered nothing new. Doom looked and played great. both games are just way too short. so short they should only win game of the week/month. overwatch never ends. there are no other games out this year that i feel i could play for an entire year. i know that's not what GOTY is but it's a factor for me in picking my own GOTY.

Overwatch for goty would be the biggest joke in 2016. It's truly an average game in my opinion and I certainly don't consider it to be in the top 3 games released this year.

Oh and btw, there should be a bias towards single player games with a multiplayer component. As we've seen, it's a lot harder to deliver a good single player experience than it is to deliver a good multiplayer experience. It takes a lot more time and I'd argue more craftsmanship as well. It is even harder to deliver a good single player experience and multiplayer experience in the same package and there should be an even bigger bias towards complete packages. Multiplayer only games last as long as the servers are active but single player games last pretty much forever. You can go back and play old NES and n64 single player games. You can't even go back and play some multiplayer games on the ps360.

I'd be down with an Overwatch win,

but my personal GOTY is undoubtedly Titanfall 2. Was able to deliver in both single player and multiplayer. BF1 could've been it if the campaign was good.

What the fuck gross. Destiny year one was a bit disappointing but holy shit it was a much better game than DAI from a gameplay standpoint.
Most of the best games in 2014 weren't even nominated, titanfall 1 wasn't either. Yet games like shadow of boredom was nominated

I don't put much stock in the game awards to be honest. I still watch it every year and think Geoff does amazing work for the industry but I find it hard to take serious a lot of the time and feel a lot of good games get overlooked.

I don't think even quantum break was awarded for anything which I think is sad. Not saying it's goty or anything but it had some pretty good performances and was innovative with the tv stuff.

Coming from someone who has played every single nominated contender for GOTY...yeah I agree...I loved Uncharted 4 tho.

Uncharted 4 feels like its in this discussion by default of it being Uncharted 4.

This year feels wide open to me across the board. There are so many good games from this year across such a wide variety of styles and genre's.

I thought Uncharted 4 was OK, but going off the games people seem to be talking about this year both critically and commercially I would rank a number of games higher, Overwatch being one.

So basically uncharted came out to early in the year to remember how great it is for some people. Ok.

The Witness is an indie puzzle game that released in January. I'd expect it to feature heavily in the GOTY conversation both on GAF and most of the usual media outlets.

I think The Witness deserves it. If not that, then I guess Uncharted 4. Both are masterpieces.

Overwatch is cool, way down the line though.

It should win but it probably won't. It's a carefully crafted, fine tuned MP experience that can appeal to casuals and hardcore. It oozes personality and appeal, colorful cast, technically solid etc. of your only gripes about it are that it launched at $60 and has MT than that's a weak argument.
Blizzard bukikt somethjbg that will last for years

I wouldn't be mad if Doom won though
