I really think Overwatch deserves GoTY over Uncharted 4. It's historically unlikely.

I'm an Inside boy, if I had to choose from the list. That game was like being a deer in headlights; fear, curiosity, and shock all happening.

I'm an Outside boy (as in, I didn't like Inside :P). Just felt it was way too derivative of Limbo whilst not improving enough on its puzzle design, atmosphere or story to really have an impact on me. The pacing wasn't great either; despite only being 2 and a half hours it felt like 5

Though (ending spoilers)...
if there was a "best technical achievement" this should win hands down just for the blob creature at the end. The animation and control is absolutely fucking amazing.

I disagree that $40-$60 multiplayer only games should win GOTY. Blizzard has shown their vision for the future with stuff like Hearthstone and Overwatch, and that vision would include less and less single player experiences. I do think something like Titanfall 2 or DOOM that offer a number of modes, single player and multiplayer, should win GOTY. Naughty Dog put everything into Uncharted 4, and it seems the most likely.

Give it enough time and gaf will have a problem with everything at some point. It's how it goes

That's how gaf is. When a game first comes out like Uncharted it's the goat. Six months later and it's trash. Then give it a year or two and it will be goat again.

Yeah this is pretty bang on actually thinking about it. It makes it really hard to tell which ones actually deserve that opening hype sometimes.

Damn, digimon that good? Gonna grab on this sale.

I'd definitely recommend it. I was one of the people in OT who had less of a great time with it and I'd still list it as one of the better games I've played this year.

I think the overall GOTY discussion will be based around Overwatch and Dark Souls 3. Overwatch will take most of it. Some PS specific mags will give out some love to UC 4 because PS dollas or it will go a PSexclusives best.

Best indie will be Inside.

Genre awards . IDK. Whatever Forza came out this year will win cars. Witness for puzzler

2016 has been a bad year unless you like shit games and delays. Bethesda was best pub this year.

Why can't people here dislike something without it being "just another GAF thing"? What if they legitimately don't think UC4 should win the award, do their opinions just not count or something?

Don't worry, you aren't alone.

I doubt UC4 will win many goty considering the competition.

who

we don't like January games in our goty awards

:/

Witness is so incredibly well designed. I mean, just think of the craftsmanship behind making a puzzle game based on one concept, and then seeing that concept creatively pushed in all kinds of twists and turns. The world is hauntingly beautiful, and the discoveries you make are so natural and satisfying to find...

how a game so well crafted like that doesnt get GOTY nomination sucks. We have the big games like Uncharted and Overwatch which I find to be great games, but nowhere near GOTY quality because they play off of typical trope designs (Hero shooter that lifts off of TF2, and refined TPS that has done it all before and tries to mimic the storytelling of a predecessor IP but falls short).

The Witness just isnt popular enough or has crazy ass cosplay fanbase to get the recognition it deserves, but everything about that game feels so special for this industry.

Sorry for going off topic :P

I think BF1 deserves to win GOTY, but seems I'm in the minority. I think the real GOTY is Witcher 3 blood & wine, it's larger than most games and is absolutely incredible.

I would put several games above overwatch though. Titanfall 2, doom, and uc4 to name a few.

The gaming media tends to gas up a lot of suspect video games so why would this bother you. Uncharted 4 is actually a good game; not one I think is anywhere close to being a great game; but it's a bit better than the usual picks. Personally I don't think it's one of the 5 best games this year has had to offer.

Overwatch on the other hand has been pretty ace.

My vote is for Doom. But honestly I wouldn't mind if any of those games won. They're all great. This isn't a Shadow of Moordor/Dragon Age type year.

It's been a great year of gaming

MP is a tough market to crack, not just for reviewers but for the general market as well. Seems very boom or bust. Overwatch was obviously a huge hit, but look at something like Titanfall 2. Tons of critical acclaim, might even get some goty buzz from certain outlets, but who knows if that community will have legs, probably in part because the market is over saturated and people stick with what they like. It is a good point, I'm just not sure how much it is going to affect Overwatch. That seems like one game that has broken through with both consumers and critics.

Agreed. We'll see I guess.

I agree but the vocal group of people on the gaming side of GAF for the most part get salty or don't like Multiplayer games. At least when it comes to voting on stuff would rather want a single player game to win usually.

Although anything can happen.

So basically uncharted came out to early in the year to remember how great it is for some people. Ok.

Uncharted 4 release date: May 10, 2016

Overwatch release date: May 24, 2016

Google is tough.

Most of the best games in 2014 weren't even nominated, titanfall 1 wasn't either. Yet games like shadow of boredom was nominated

I don't put much stock in the game awards to be honest. I still watch it every year and think Geoff does amazing work for the industry but I find it hard to take serious a lot of the time and feel a lot of good games get overlooked.

I don't think even quantum break was awarded for anything which I think is sad. Not saying it's goty or anything but it had some pretty good performances and was innovative with the tv stuff.

I love Shadow of Mordor and still thought it winning multiple Game of the Year awards was offensively stupid. The idea that it was better than Smash Bros. AND Titanfall is a total joke. But then 2014 was rather mediocre overall as far as current generation games went.

In 2004 GTA San Andreas won over Halo 2.
In 2005 Resident Evil 4 won over World of Warcraft.
In 2006 The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion won over Gears of War.
In 2007 Bioshock won over COD4 (which wasn't even nominated) and Halo 3.
And Mass Effect. Nothing to do with MP I just had to note that.
In 2009 and 2010 Uncharted 2 and Red Dead Redemption won over both COD titles, both Halo games, Left 4 Dead games etc. You get the idea.

Fast forward to 2014 to the first annual Game Awards. Dragon Age Inquisition (jesus christ) wins over Destiny and Super Smash Brothers Wii U. That was just a bad year for gaming.

The only year that should be any different is 2014 though

Overwatch or Dark Souls III are acceptable GOTY for me, wouldn't be surprised if Uncharted sweeps though

UC4 bored me a little. Very pretty but I didn't have as much fun as when I played UC2.

TF2 is my GOTY. Bothe SP and MP are fantastic.

I still don't get this Uncharted 4 love. It's beautiful game, but boy did it drag at parts.

Because it's a great experience to play. I don't know why GAF is shocked that it gets high praise. Outside of this forum many love the game.

I've talked to many people who played this as their first game in the series and loved it. Went back and played older games and didn't like them as much.

I didn't even realize GAF had a problem with it? It was fucking brilliant. Standards here have been getting ridiculous to the point that nothing is ever good enough anymore.
I'm a member of another gaming community and most people there disliked Uncharted 4. Opinions of the game are at least divisive.

GAF isnt shocked. GAF isnt anything in particular.

Overwatch is a weird entity I just cannot fathom. Sombra hype was all over my twitter feed for 2 months with zero info and she's just 1 character addition ffs. God help me if there's actually a big worthwhile expansion.

Overwatch is probably my GOTY but I buy very few new games a year. Overwatch, Pokemon, and TitanFall 2 are the only game I bought released this year that I can remember.

Also the only GOTY that matters is the one on your heart. (But also the Giant Bomb GOTY because those get brutal even if they are always pretty safe)

Honestly I would say DOOM just for it's single player but, since the multiplayer is also there I can't say it. Since we judge by the entire game.
Overwatch is arguably a better game than Uncharted 4, for sure. But no game deserves game of the year it as much as Inside.

Sorry, I seen
Akira
before.

If anything is overrated it's video game award shows. The only GOTY that matters is your own.

This is also true, which is why my previous comment says what it says. I can't see myself ever giving a $40-$60 multiplayer game GOTY, no matter how much fun I had with it. A developer that created a 15hr-30hr single player or a 12hr single player with multiplayer modes will win out every time for me.

Uncharted 4 is a chore to play. Even hardcore apologists will admit the platforming sections were just boring and clear padding to the game's length. The whole experience could have been a lot tighter, because a whole half of that game is uneventful.

There is more content in Uncharted 4 than in Overwatch, thats a fact, thus making Uncharted 4 the reasonable contender for the 2016 GOTY

But then are you judging the game or the volume of content? It would be insane to judge any other media in such a way, even as a tie-break. "Well, the judges were split on these books, but one is five hundred pages longer so it wins first prize".

And it's damaging because there's so many games that have had God knows how many developer hours spent on pointless shit that nobody cares about, just so they can say it has multiplayer as a bullet-point on the back of the box. I vividly remember playing Timeshift (remember that one?) the week after it launched and there being precisely 0 players in the online multiplayer mode.

Why wouldn't a comedy win the Oscars?

OT: this year has a lot of great contenders, I would nominate Overwatch definitely.

The Academy historically favors super pretentious expressions of serious business art-as-movie, so comedies don't win Best Picture. Somewhat similarly, I imagine game journalists are eager to promote games as important works instead of spectacularly fun entertainment with friends, so traditionally you need something single player and narrative-driven.

People saying Doom 4 is the GOTY means they really don't play FPS games and this is the first they played in years (or ever). This year we had some amazing FPS games that totally blew Doom 4 out of the water: Shadow Warrior 2, Killing Floor 2, Superhot, Titanfall 2, Paladins, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and many more and that's just this year. Doom 4 is a decent game, quite fun but nothing special. I wouldn't even dream to put it in the top 20 of this year. Not saying that people can't enjoy it, like I said, it's not a bad game but there have been so many much MUCH more enjoyable games this year and not just in the FPS department.

If anything is overrated it's video game award shows. The only GOTY that matters is your own.

Well said, I stopped caring when GOTY awards failed to recognize Bloodborne last year.

I don't feel like either UC4 or OW deserves GOTY, Nioh Beta should be it, but I won't be the one to decide.

Overwatch is definitely my GOTY, and the first multiplayer game I've really gotten in to since TF2. I think it will clean up nicely at plenty of outlets.
