Well first off, Venom is an 80s character, not a 60s one. *pushes up nerd glasses*
That aside, Venom hasn't been a villain for ages. It's the reason they introduced Carnage in the 90s, even, to give Spider-Man a symbiote villain that can never be redeemed.
Venom the symbiote no longer is part of Eddie Brock, and has changed hosts multiple times over the years, going to Mac Gargan (whom you might know as the Scorpion, another one of Spidey's villains), and then to Flash Thompson (whom you might remember as the guy who bullied Spidey in high school). Thompson at this point is a war veteran with amputated legs, and the symbiote is restoring those to him. He was working for the US government as a special ops and since then has become an Avenger, a Guardian of the Galaxy and a steadfast ally to Spider-Man. Venom at this point is a proper hero, not even an anti-hero like Brock's Venom was.
