Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

Does Sony typically make the equivalent of "patch notes" easy to find?

I can't belive I am now looking forward to big hardware getting firmware updates.

Hey guys, just got the 55 inch version of this TV and really enjoying it so far.

Don't suppose anyone know how I can check what resolution the TV is playing videos at using the Android TV apps? For example if I'm watching an Amazon Prime show (Man in the High Castle) that is meant to be 4K and HDR, how can I verify that that is what the panel is outputting? The info button doesn't seem to work when using the Android TV apps.

Action Menu > Picture. The HDR badge will show if enabled.

New firmware update today. No idea what it does.
Yep, new update for Euro crowd it seems. Downloading now.
Hopefully it has the image info tags I saw on the pic of a fellow GAFfer the other day, that'd be useful.

E: nope :(
I wonder why it's apparently a us only thing

I picked this TV up earlier this month (the 43 inch one), and no matter how much I tweak the settings, I just can't get it to look good to me. It either looks too dull, or too bright, or with the blacks too washed out. I tried the Rtings suggested settings and they look too dull for me, with washed out blacks. It's my first LED/LCD tv, so I know blacks won't be as deep as my lovely 2008 Panasonic plasma. So what are some of the settings you guys are using? I use it primarily in a low-moderately lit room. I love a number of things about the tv, such as the great colors, low input lag for gaming, the beautiful sleek design of the actual physical tv itself, the price, and the 4K and HDR capacity.

But for the reasons mentioned above I'm thinking of returning it...plus I've noticed some horizontal banding and dirty screen effect, which was noticeable to me in parts of the Titanfall 2 campaign as I started playing through it yesterday.

Take a look at Zoonami's settings above. They tend to lean on the too bright side but with a bit of tweaking I have liked them the best so far.

Thank you for your reply.

I took a look at them, and they're similar to some of the combinations I tried, which ended up still leaving me dissatisfied. I feel like as I'm tweaking the picture settings, I keep getting close to an ideal picture, but just one thing or another is a bit off.

Also, he said he had the 49 inch model correct? Which uses an IPS panel which would probably mean lower contrast ratio than the 43 inch version which could affect the setting choices unless I'm mistaken?

Hmm.... I would say get the Samsung 8000 if you don't Like this one but their picture is even more brighter than the Sony one.

Thanks, but they start at 49 inches don't they? Which is too big for the room/distance I'll be using it, plus it's just a bit out of my budget right now. 43 inches or so is about right for me, for the size.

I actually like this Sony TV in a lot of ways, I just feel like I can't get the settings quite right.

Yeah, the different panels mean settings will be different.

Did you do all the advanced color settings from rtings? http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x800d/settings

For the 43 VA I would probably keep the contrast enhancer turned off.

With the Va id probably push your contrast to 95 in a lit room, or max in a dark room. Based on other posters saying no white clipping at max contrast on the va panel.

Lastly I would maybe try moving the black level around a bit to see if that helps you.

Each panel even if the same size is going to have some variation. It's theoretically possible you got sort of a subpar panel, and an exchange might to you good.

The backlight on my first one was all sorts of fucked up with terrible bleed and uniformity/uneven lighting behind the whole panel. Blacks and contrast were noticeably better after I exchanged. If you can't get a picture you like it may be worth an exchange shot.

Otherwise you could try a Samsung 40 inch 6300.

I tried them, it ended up looking worse.

I have contrast at 90. Any more than that and the brightness of the whites starts bothering my eyes, as I have a bit of light sensitivity. I tried contrast at max as well, and it didn't really seem to offer much a positive for me.

I did notice however that moving the black level from 50, to 46 seems to give me quite deep blacks, without seeming to lose much if any detail for me. So I'm thinking that by leaving that there, and playing around with the backlight and some other setting might find me a good result.

How have you guys been as far as dirty screen effect? Like I said, I have some definite horizontal bands, and noticeable dirty screen effect in some situations. It isn't awful, but it is annoying.

Edit: it may be. Or I may be just veryyyyy particular about trying to set it correctly, to my eyes. Haha.

40 inches is a bit small for me. Light bleed doesn't seem to be an issue. I can get the blacks deep. The only concern I have regarding panel quality is the horitizontal banding/dirty screen effect I've mentioned in my previous posts.

I don't have any noticeable banding or dirty screen. This is why an exchange may do you good.

The only odd thing I have noticed is some digital noise here and there on comcast, but turning on the anti noise stuff largely fixed it.

I will say I'm not very impressed with the 720p upscaling on this set. The hisense h8c and Panasonic ax800u I had before this set were much better at upscaling cable channels. Its not terrible, but definitely could be better.

Yeah, I'm thinking about an exchange for that reason. I've had some issues with cable tv from Comcast not looking too great either.

I think I'm just also having a hard time letting go of my Panasonic plasma. Great black levels, no viewing angles issues, excellent for tv/movies. The problem is, the thing is a freaking space heater, and seems to have a good deal of input lag in cinema mode, and I play a lot of online FPS multiplayer games. I'd play in game mode on the tv as it has one, but game mode on that tv looks absolutely horrendous picture quality wise, no matter what settings I have.

Part of me just wants to wait to see next years offerings.

Ideally I'd just wait for a good quality OLED tv in my size and price range to come out, but I have no idea when that might happen.

Yeah might be a long wait for a smaller oled.

As much as OLED prices are dropping in price at a pretty good rate year over year, I'm not sure we will see 40 inch range ones anytime soon. I think a lot of companies want to push people into spending money on a big TV to get them.

Even if someone does put out a 43" OLED, I bet the cost will be pretty high due to there being very little competition in that size range.

Still, CES is only a month and a bit away. Might be worth waiting to see what gets announced.

That's what I'm thinking, especially for one in the size/price range, and with the specs I want.

Yup, I hope there might be good news on that front, but I just doubt there will be a decent 43'ish inch OLED with the specs I desire in the $600-$800 range by next year. Hence why I'm trying to make this Sony TV work. It's hard to go back to playing competitive online FPS games on a TV that has such high input lag. (and such an ugly looking game mode that it's not even worth using)

Yeah input lag is an absolute killer. That's the problem with waiting for new tvs to release after they are announced at CES, too. You have no idea what the input lag is going to be until it's out, and if it's bad you waited for nothing! 33 ms of input lag is my cut off, so even this set is right on the boundary for me, haha.

Right, and after playing CoD/Titanfall 2/Battlefield 1/Rainbow Six: Siege on the Sony in game mode, it feels much better, and like I die less often to what feels like bullshit, and feel more able to quickly respond to an enemy and get kills.

Rtings settings are meant to be color accurate, natural and 6500k etc. But to many they can look dull as we are used to the artificially enhanced picture manufacturers tend to push. It is personal preference. What I would advise you to do is turn on game mode and tinker with settings to your taste. Use things like Live Color, change black levels etc. No settings are ever perfect. I find the Sony easier to calibrate than the Samsung for some reason.

Right. The colors actually look good to me. That's not the issue I'm having. I'm primarily tinkering with the backlight, the black level, and contrast, as I'm having difficulty striking a balance where the blacks aren't washed out, but the picture is still bright enough to show the proper level of details, without being overly bright, and without the whites becoming too bright. As I mentioned earlier, I have some issues with light sensitivity, so that may be playing a role as well.

Thank you for your reply. :)

Installing the firmware update now.

Hopefully it's fixed the annoying issue where if you turn the TV off it will randomly decide to cut you off from the majority of online services next time you use it (Amazon Video, Google Play Store, Google Play Music etc) until you remove and re-add your Google account. Sadly though I suspect this may be an Android issue.

I'm considering this TV. Glancing at the last few pages, there is input lag on it?

Yeah, there's always going to be lag on almost every TV, but this Sony set is pretty good, with lag down to around 32ms in 1080p, 4k, and 4k with HDR. I got used to gaming on my last TV which had around 50ms lag, and this one feels significantly snappier.

As for my settings, I'm still playing around with mine. I had the Advanced Contrast Enhancer on low, but found that I could see the brightness levels moving during dark sequences: was watching Luke Cage in 4k, which can be very dark, and it was really annoying.

I've noticed that having the "Black Adjust" to minimum seems to have helped with really dark images: it doesn't seem to be crushing as much. Again, I'll probably tinker with my settings for another few months, I'm sure.

Very low input lag.

Try increasing your gamma to 1 or 2. I found that helped immensely.

Sucks. If LG would just make a 43" OLED... :(

Doubtful it will happen. As you can see below 49" you are pretty much shit out of luck in terms of quality. Aside from the X800D, you have televisions that are extremely budget minded. It is a niche size. Even at 49" there are few options. LG is already struggling as it is the only manufacturer pushing OLED. They will probably just stick with 55", 65", and 75" for consumer sets.

Yeah, I get it, but it's a bummer that the technology can't be implemented on smaller form factors. It's crazy to think that it was not that long ago when one of the very best TVs on the market was a 34" 16:9 Trinitron XBR CRT for like $3500. LOL

Before I got this TV my main gaming screens were a 21" 1080p monitor and a 26" 720p TV so 43" being considered small kind of blows my mind.

I think it is more the resolution that causes issues. 4K shines at larger sizes. Sort of why 26"-32" never really got proper 1080p sets for several years. I think when 8K eventually comes, they won't make sets smaller than 60". But I agree, it is a size perfect for bedrooms, dens, even smaller living rooms etc. They always change sizes around too. Back in the day, 37" and 42" was a size, as was 46" and 52" etc. Who knows, maybe a 45" sweet spot might make up for the 40", 43" and 49" sizes etc.

Said this in the general 4k TV thread but specific to the SONY Android TV's..I think it's my favorite feature. A full on app store is so much better than those dinky same old apps every device comes preinstalled with. Now I wish I could delete some things like Crackle or that stupid Direct TV app but if I have to live with them in order to have Kodi and the SNES 9+ emulator than so be it.

I've been gaming on a 24" for years... people can think this is small all they want, lol. It's perfect for me.
Patch notes are out:

So it was not all in my head. Big improvement!
How to update if you are on a 43X800D (USA)? Gotta wait for the USA site to add it or what?
*edit* okay I see the region info is in the filename... gotta wait for "naa" i guess

Wait... You can download emulators on this TV?! How do you get roms? Is there a web browser?

Most comfortable way is to download the stuff you want via PC and copy it to the TV (or just read it from the USB).

And yeah, there's a plethora of emulators available for Android TV. Not all of them will run great on the TV due to processing power etc but I imagine stuff like SNES will run perfectly fine (have only used emulators on my Shield TV, it ran MHP3rd HD better than the PS3 lol)

Obviously you can also side load apps, I think PPSSPP isn't on the ATV PlayStore.

I have the XBR930D but I would assume it's any of the Sony's that run Android TV. It's just a straight up version of the Google Play store. When you go in there and look around the SNES Emulator is like one of the most prominently displayed apps to download. As for Roms, I haven't messed it with too much but I had a few on a thumb drive and it just ran off of that. But you can download file browsers on the TV (which is also crazy) and just move stuff around I assume.
