The Last of Us Part II announced

With all due respect but this is so dumb, you don't even know the premise or where the new game is going and already are assuming things

Yeah, i don't understand this early conclusion and "retcon ending" / ruin ending posts. Like they are not going to adress it at all...

Continuing after the pitch perfect note they did is going to dilute the ending a bit.

I'm excited because this will probably be Ellie focused since Joel has run his course, but the love I have for that ending will be gone.

You've had years with the ending as-is. You'll have had at least half a decade with the ending by the time Part 2 comes out. I'd understand the argument that the ending would lose its pitch-perfect tone for people who play the original game and the sequel back-to-back (the possibility also exists for it to add to the story, but I'll leave that aside), but how can it possibly lose its luster for you personally when it's literally been years since you've played it? It's completely confounding.

My thoughts from the PSX thread:

The idea for TLU2 could be:

- Ellie knows Joel lied
- Ellie now is a on a quest to kill all infected as she failed (due Joel) to become a cure for humanity
- Joel has to watch how the daughter she saved, becomes broken while on her quest

I think it could fit with the idea that Ellie has that "I couldn't be for nothing"; now that she's alive and the last doctors are dead, all she can do for humanity (and those who died to give her a chance to live) is to hunt and kill as many infected as she can.

At the same time, Joel is forced to watch the consequences of his decision. Would have been better let her die for the cure rather than watch her kill herself now slowly as punishment for a fate she didn't chose?

Oh man, I can't wait for it!!

I didn't want a sequel to the first game. But fuck me that trailer was great.

I'm kinda sad that Ellie has turned into a murderer. It is what it is.

OMG I CAN"T HANDLE THE HYPE! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

and what a god damn amazing trailer too..that start with the shaking hand...beautiful

The fact they went with the name Last of Us Part II instead of The Last of Us 2 tells me Naughty Dog know what they're doing.

Hopefully, this'll be on some Godfather pt.II shit.

Unfortunate that they will ruin that perfect, amazing ending.

Oh well.

Unless they're going to directly patch the first game to change its ending, this is the weirdest thought process ever.

Done correctly, TLOUp2's story can perfectly complement the first game's ending, build off of it, show us where things go. Have we lost faith in ND so quickly? They wouldn't tell this story if they didn't think it wouldn't do all of that.

My only concern is I thought Joel and Ellie's story ended perfectly, so going back to them feels odd, but I am excited to see what they do with it.

This is getting made for one single reason.

I'd like to think that Naughty Dog has built up enough trust with Sony so they're able to choose their own projects by now.

I find it entirely plausible that they just felt they had more stories to tell in that universe.

One of the main ND writers said that they had basically created an origin story for a strong iconic female character with TLoU - I think you could already tell they were thinking about future episodes involving her back then.

That Ellie death stare had better be a constant and expanding thing or this game will only serve to diminish the ending of 1. I'll wait for more, but I'm seeing a "screw this industry's obsession with sequels" down the line.

Well, I hope everyone played the first one, because this trailer pretty much spoils the ending by showing you that both Ellie and Joel survive. I just texted my roommate, who's going through it for the first time, and told him: "Do NOT watch or read about the trailer for 'The Last of Us Part II.' There are spoilers."

As for my thoughts, as someone who has gone through the game four times:

I never wanted a sequel since I think it will diminish the first game's impact. But if they really, truly have a story to tell that's just as good, or better, then I'm open to it. My only concern beyond that is whether Naughty Dog has forgotten to properly pace a game. Uncharted 4 was so poorly done in that regard.

Then again, UC4 doesn't have gameplay nearly as good as TLoU. At least the scavenging and crafting mechanic in TLoU gives you something meaningful to do between battles.

Yeah man Ellie is clearly very very messed up mentally in this game. But that makes a ton of sense. Look at the shit she went through as a child, that would scar the hell out of anyone.

And clearly, something else has happened since then. I don't think the idea that Joel is dead here is far fetched at all.
Just a reminder of what happened to the last person who directly tried to fuck with her:

It's not that they're not brave. Its that killing someone off is literally so predictable that even before we know anything about this game people are already predicting it.

It's boring.
I mean it's not boring, especially when it leads to interesting gameplay scenarios, switching unexpectedly to Elli during the winter was one of the highlights because hey we've been playing as this borderline immortal dude this whole time, now we're playing a teenage girl, who is way more vulnerable. And then there comes a point where it's like "Ok come the fuck on" when these characters survive some things, like Joel and his magical healing penicillin or Nathan Drake hitting his head on a cliff and falling onto the ground from way up high, only to have a small cut and while his wife teleports to his location on a huge island.

I will be there day one. The first is still the best story in gaming. I get the concern over retreading this ground, but I trust them to make it amazing.

I need to try and get into TLOU, I started it but balked when I met the first group of infected things!

Everyone is so hype I'm gonna try and start the game again (after ffxv lol!)

That's because ND isn't brave enough to kill characters who aren't the main cast of playable characters, (Joel surviving that wound was bullshit, especially since penicillin healed him magically and he was so refreshed that he could overpower and torture multiple people as well as travel a long distance). TLOU was the only one in that regard where they even hinted at it, just judging from the atmosphere in this trailer, Joel is fucked, what other motivation would Ellie of all people have to go scorched earth on a group of people and then sing about it afterwards with trembling hands? You realize how sociopathic that is? The implication is that she brutally murdered these people and then sang in a room by herself. ._.
I feel like The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Lost and a few other TV shows have conditioned some of you to think that character deaths are the height of story-telling drama. It's gotten ridiculous.
It's not that they're not brave. Its that killing someone off is literally so predictable that even before we know anything about this game people are already predicting it.

It's boring.
That's not brave to me, it's following through with a common, always anticipated trope.
Correct to both of these.

I feel the town Ellie and Joel are in gets wiped out. Joel is killed and Ellie goes on a revenge story.

Joel is actually dead in the trailer and is just appearing in Ellies mind.....

Well, I'm excited and will probably buy it; I'd rather it be something completely new thiugh. A new game or new story in that universe. At the very least just focus it on Ellie like Neil said he would.

I think Joel and Ellie's story ended perfectly and I don't know if there's any story that can do justice to that ending.
