I say he's gonna be gone within the first 1-2 hours if he doesn't die right off the bat. Regrow those connections for the players and then crush them. Make the player hate the aggressor (probably the fireflies) to the point where they are right there with Ellie and her revenge quest.

The Last Of Us essentially left on a cliffhanger with them arriving to a camp/settlement that god knows what its there for and HOW its funded in an apocalyptic world where everything gone to shit. There is so much to tell in the world and the fungus virus, it almost felt like Naughty Dog didnt expand on it enough.

These guys tell amazing stories and its never enough for some people.
