Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

Jesus..but how will anyone find this watchable in your typical average sized living room?

Like I said I already find this set to be way to bright. Had to find a good mix of bright/color and i think i found it but every once in a while a solid white (like when you boot up Rez Infinite) will come across the screen and we all turn our heads...even the dog think it's too bright!

You may be right. Sometimes I actually find myself turning down brightness on my KS8000 because it is just too bright. Cannot imagine if had a Sony Z9D that almost hits 1900 nits of brightness.

I think brightness is decent on this set. Much better than models like last years W800C or X830C sets. I still feel next year Sony will be able to hit 600-1000+ nits of brightness for all sets including budget. It is the one thing they are focusing on with black levels as well.

Honestly sounds like you may want to dim the backlight (brightness), maybe create a night-time customs preset.

Content creators can still show a 'solid white' without having the brightness at max level, just keep it to 100 nits.

As far as 10k nits specular highlight, I really don't know. Should be reserved for explosions, the sun, freakkin laser beams, but yea thats going to be crazy in a dark room.

EDIT: Dolby actually wanted more than 10k nits:

http://blog.dolby.com/2013/12/tv-bright-enough/

is there a cheap way to estimate your TV's nit output? Eg display a pure white screen and then point a camera at it - ISO 100 f8 1/60 second metered = 100 nits, something like that?

Loving the 43 inch so far. My only criticism is that the viewing angles are pretty poor, but its 4K with HDR and really makes PS4 Pro games look better.

Fifa 17 in 4K is just so sharp!

I am not aware of a method using a camera, unless you have a light meter. If you want to keep it ~cheap~ you can choose a Colormunki ~$100 US and it is relatively accurate, I believe can measure close to 1k nits. The i1Display Pro can measure 1k nits for certain and runs a about $170 US.

This is the same TV I have (although it's called something different in the UK)

I use the settings they recommend on Rtings.com and I can say it's absolutely beautiful in most games.

I can't get over how brilliant games like Final Fantasy 15 look

So, I can finally talk about this. I think there could be something seriously wrong with The Last Guardian and HDR. The game isn't the best looking, but in most scenes the game looks incredibly washed out. There is no fog in this area, it's an inside area that is quite dark.

The game supports HDR?

People in the review thread said that HDR works real nice for them. I have not seen that kind of look in the game either.

What do your settings look like?

Other HDR in games look correct im assuming. Right?

I'll need to go have a look but as we know with other games such as The Witness, HDR can different greatly depending on the TV. Other games look good. Settings are pretty close to default in game mode. Brightness at around 30 and Contract sitting at about 90. Everything else on default.

I am sure you have it hooked up to HDMI 2 or 3 and them being set to "Enhanced Mode"?

The easiest thing to do is to check your video levels and make sure that they aren't mismatched.

Also make sure advanced contrast enhancer, light sensor, auto picture mode, and black adjust are off, don't recall what default is.

If it is still washed out and you have tried The Witness fix, try dialing the contrast down maybe 5 clicks or so, but this isn't optimal as it will diminish your peak brightness.

Try setting your gamma to 0 and black level to 45.

What is the witness fix?

BASIC SET UP INFORMATION*************PLEASE READ**************

1) Connect your Pro or other 4k/HDR gaming devices into either HDMI ports 2 or 3. HDMI port 1 and 4 will not allow 4k/60hz w/HDR at full 4k.
2) Turn on Enhanced HDMI. Click the home button on your Sony's remote, scroll all the way down to settings. Go to input. Change HDMI to ENHANCED. This turns on 444 and HDR at full 4k.
3) Go to your PS4's settings -> Sound and Screen -> Make sure everything is on automatic. And then go to video output information and make sure it says : 2160p - 60hz. HDR: 2k/4k. If it says 2160p - 30hz and/or HDR (at 2k only) SOMETHING IS WRONG
4) You can leave many of the PS4's and TV's settings on auto. The TV and Pro do a good job of communicating with each other for the optimal picture depending on the software being used.

Enhanced HDMI option should have been switched on by default.

I shudder to think of the number of people who are playing their PS4 Pros without HDR because of this.

Trying this as soon as I get home.

If you don't turn on enhanced HDMI (on Sonys) or HDMI UHD Color (on Samsungs) you can still get HDR. But the resolution will drop to 1080p.

Which is even more frightening. Thinking people are getting 4k output but as soon as they turn on HDR the resolution drops to 1080p.

Make sure your settings on your Bravia is set to Auto. (like RGB color space) and that corresponding setting on your PS4 settings is also set to auto.

I really want to buy this tv....but Amazon.ca only has one seller for the 49 inch and they want $1399.99. And I'm buying from Amazon because I have money in my gift card balance... What about the x700d? What are the differences?

Why not just price match bestbuy.ca or one of the qualifying websites?

Edit: NVM I see you mean someone other than Amazon

I have some backlight bleed on my 43inch panel, particulalry visible when ambient lighting is off. Thinking about getting it replaced by Amazon. Otherwise great tv.

I went through two 49" models, the light bleed and black level was such that I couldn't bring myself to keep it.

Not trying to deter anyone but thought I'd share my experience honestly.

Video games looked great in motion, but most movies and TV shows looked terrible in dark scenes, especially those with letterboxes.

Haven't bought a PS4Pro yet, but since I will, I've been looking for a good reasonable priced 4K TV for a while. Having read this thread I got a 55" (XD8005) model on black friday for around 700€ which I think is a good price. KS7000 is a but too expensive for me at the moment.

So far I'm pretty satisfied. Sure, the blacks could be a bit better but compared to my old TV there isn't much to complain and everything else is just science fiction compared to that one. In a couple of years I'll probably buy an OLED but for now this set is more than enough.

Tried some 4K material on Netflix and Youtube which, and especially some material on Youtube, looked superb.

I have one issue with HDR so far, while trying Daredevil on Netflix, and that is when the subtitles show all of the screen goes a tiny bit more white, compared to when the subtitles don't show. Is this normal for HDR?

Caved in and bought the 43". Coming from a 2010 120hz 46" Sony Bravia. Hope the size difference isn't too noticeable. Will this upgrade be worth it in general? Just bought a pro a week or so ago as well.

If anyone can help me out, I connected a HDD USB to stream videos from, however when I go to the "videos" app, it says device not recognized. Am I in the wrong thing?

I just have a folder called 'Trailers' in the root of my USB drive and the video app is quite capable of navigating through.

There is a bug in the HDR implementation, that affects Sony Bravia and at least some Samsung TV's. The dev said they have a fix and it will be patched shortly.

The issue and fix is posted, and it's really a very strange fix.

Man what a bunch of snark in that thread. Funny people are so quick to correct and trash you but never bother to apologize when the actual dev acknowledges the issue.

I am really thankful Jonathan showed up and communicates so well with gamers, it is so rare to have this kind of openness and that a bug fix is on the way.

But I hear you. Some people did stop by with good feedback but there were a few drive-byes at my expense.

Welcome to NeoGAF.

I do, but I do believe display tech is use specific. I sit about 3 feet back from the VA straight on and it's nice. If I was to sit off angle, I would conclude it's a POS.

Exactly. It really depends on the use of the TV. VA panel viewing angles are AWFUL, but black levels are great if you're viewing straight on.

I do think the adaptive contrast enhancer helps quite a bit on the 49 inch, as does a bias lighting led strip.

I also had terrible bleed on the first 49 inch and did an exchange for a perfect one. Seems bleeding on the 49 inch is somewhat common.
