Rogue One: A Star Wars Story |OT| They rebel - SPOILERS

Haven't seen hacksaw ridge, but sure. Ultimately it's still a Star Wars movie and I like the balance of tone they achieved.

I also wanted to add that Rogue One is the prequel movie we always wanted. It makes you excited for finding out what happened in the past and not dumbfounded and confused like the prequels.

And I have to hand it to Rogue One. They somehow made a prequel where you more or less know where it has to end up feel like it has real stakes. Probably helped by the fact it's NOT about the main Star Wars characters from the other trilogies.
Yes in an alternate universe this could have been an "Episode 3" to the OT. They really managed to nail the look of the old films while updating it and presenting it in a fresh way. It felt much more "in universe" than the prequels ever did.

...I've heard Vader is practically nothing in this movie though from reviews and people that have seen it, so I'm very confused at this reaction.

...I shouldn't even be in this thread though tbh

The spoilers that we are dealing with here is immeasurable.

Sounds like he's only briefly in the film but gets a few scene-stealing moments. Saw someone describe him as "the good version" of Joker in Suicide Squad.

Just saw that leaked Vader scene.

GOD DAMN.

This is fanboy reaction like Vader is barely in this but when he is goddamn.

I see. So... but I mean, like I've seen Jeremy Jahns and even people here say that if you cut Vader it wouldn't change much. But I think in terms of the film experience, if the scene(s) are that great, then-- wouldn't it have an impact on, again, the experience? Like it may not change the narrative per se, but great moments can absolutely heighten the overall movie.

Wait why isn't there a spoiler thread? Shouldn't the OT be free of spoilers for a certain amount of time?

Seems like a spoiler free Rogue One thread doesn't exist right now...

That scene that Jeremy really wanted to talk about at the end of his review but didn't to save it for the spoiler review? That's Vader. Vader has like five minutes of screen time, and yeah the case can be made it was pure fan service, but fans love Vader and the scenes are great. I feel like a lot of reviews are avoiding Vader talk at all because of spoilers.

Did anybody like what they did with the opening titles? It was understandable that they skipped the text crawl in the beginning, but what the heck was that awkward yellow "Rogue One" title card quickly shrinking and fading? It felt like it was made in ten minutes before they shipped the film.

Okay, so it's a great appearance then. Works for me. I'm outta here for now lol

I'm just back from the movies, and I'm totally blown away. This is how you make a prequel and shows care to the source material while still adding something fresh. It's all thumbs up for me, please let this man make another Star Wars,

I thought it was awesome. One little thing to let you know it's not the kind of Star Wars film that you've seen before.

Was it basically like The Clone Wars intro?

The review thread is the spoiler-free thread. At least it is supposed to be. Folks figured out that there's no point in spoiler-free OT... because anyone who watches the film will be talking about spoilers anyway.

Okay, just saw this clip (the one w/ sound, yes?)

This isn't all of it. There's a bit of setup right before this that builds just the right amount of mood, and the ending is cut off.

The actual very end of that scene is on that subreddit too but I bailed before seeing the whole thing.

So just got back from a 3D screening. Perhaps bad things can be said about the blurry cross-talk effect of bad 3D cinemas, but at least this time, it saved the suspension of disbelief with these Grand Moff Tarkin and Princess Leia CG-versions. Too difficult to judge the photorealism!

I just have a feeling they wouldn't, really, have looked that bad in sharper 2D, either - 2D viewers, they are somewhat convincing, aren't they? It felt like we were still in way different territory than, say, CG Jeff Bridges in Tron.

IMO they were pretty convincing. Sure, one knows they're CGI plus there's the slight unnatural way light works on them that tells that but otherwise, they worked for me.
Of course, like i said earlier, i'm not good at reading faces and as a result miss things like sliding mouths Bobby complained about.

Though now that i think of this, the screen in the theater i used wasn't the biggest one... guess things depend on how the screen size and stuff too.

I saw it in 2D. Can confirm that they were on the correct side of the uncanny valley compared to Tron, but still have a bit left to climb. My boyfriend didn't notice that Peter Cushing was CG, fwiw.

I just came back from the cinema and I liked it a lot.

I must say that the Vader scene you're talking about is even more powerful when seen on the big screen, there's a nice build-up leading to it. :)

I had really low expectations but my worries were completely unfounded. I really, really liked it! My friends enjoyed it quite a lot too.

The feel and look of the world, characters, aliens and even the ships, etc. has this feel of the old movies, those I really love.

The wait for EP VIII is going to be unbearable.

What where the SW rebels cameos? Only noticed the "general Syndulla" voice over at Yavin base.

The Ghost can be seen in the battle over Scarif. Chopper on Yavin 4.

Edit: Just got back a little while ago. I loved it. Was surprised with how gritty it was. The Vader scene gave me life.

Tarkin and Leia worked for me, but the CGI was definitely noticable.

It's nice having Star Wars to look forward to every christmas.

Tarkin was odd for me. It really didn't work in the first half of the film, everytime he was on screen I felt like I was watching a videogame. But in the scene where he ordered the Death Star strike on Scarif I hardly noticed it at all.

Rogue One was initially set to come out this past summer as well.

I hope they stick with December. I want Christmas to mean Star Wars. For the rest of my life. lol

This. I kinda want this. IMO it's the perfect movie for December. It would be nice to associate SW and Christmas together for the foreseeable future

Just came back from seeing it. I honestly wasn't really feeling it until around the final half of the movie: that's when things started clicking together and the whole just became great.

Let's get the bad out of the way first: they try to make you care about certain characters, but it just falls completely flat. I don't remember any of the main squad's names except Jyn, whereas normally I just absorb that stuff without a second thought. There are some scenes that attempt to feel emotional but come across as really forced, for instance
when the machine gun guy calls Jyn 'little sister' or Saw's death scene. You don't care about these characters, hell, the three minutes Saw was on scene he was a complete douchebag. It didn't really do much for me, in that regard.

But, to counteract that, there's a shitload of good in the movie as well. I'll keep it spoilered from here on out, just in case.

The callbacks (or call-forwards, I guess) to A New Hope were great, even if some of them felt a little forced. I was giddy like a schoolgirl to see Bail Organa again, and just being on Yavin again was great as well. 3P0 and R2D2 appearing for a split second was cool, as was the appearance of ANH's cantina customers' twin brothers.
The movie had a lot of great setpieces, from Jedha's fallen statues to Scariff's tropical beauty. The latter was so nicely contrasted with the battling going on, as well. The quick visit to Mustafar was cool, too.
Speaking of Mustafar, how awesome was Vader in this? Seeing him in his tank first was such a great way to introduce him. Then he comes out and he's just this large, hulking figure oozing menace from every pore. GAF almost ruined him for me by pointing out the fringe of his helmet sticking out, and his voice didn't sound as Vader-y as I remember, either, but his posture and demeanor were pure badass. When he lit up his lightsaber and went to town on those guys, holy fuck.

The music was great, but - like with the rest of the movie - it took a while to finally click. I'm interested to see how I feel when I rewatch it, probably soon.
