Rogue One: A Star Wars Story |OT| They rebel - SPOILERS

I thought the movie was ok. The first two acts seem disjointed and it took a long time before I cared about the characters. Forest Whiticker's character was amazing and I wish he was in it longer. Some hardcore "goes too far" alliance bad ass could have been explored far more than it was. I was not a fan of the fake CGI people, it feels like we are not ready tech wise for that. Took me out of the movie every time I saw it.

As far as action it had some of the best by far. I really like that there wasn't much Jedi because Jedi are boring. I was surprised by how much I liked the two Asian dudes, I normally hate the kung fu force nonsense but it was done really well.

I don't think it is a movie I will watch over and over, but I will give it another viewing on red box.

Is this a cut scene or an alternate take. I thought he was going to take a Tie Fighter up to the top vs. follow her by foot.

On my drive home, I was wondering whether I blacked out for a second because I couldn't remember where this scene happened. That scene from the trailers really made an impact on me and I was looking forward to it. Good to know that it didn't make the cut and I'm not crazy. But what a shame

Also her running with the drive on the beach was cut too

I was wondering why she pulled her blaster out when she walked out there, good to know that something else happened in an earlier cut.
 
James Earl Jones is 85 :(

He should voice Mufasa in the live action Lion King then call it a career.

Between this and Dragon Ball Super, so many of my favorite voice actors are getting old and just can't perform quite like they used to :(
 
Okay so I've gone on a binge of watching CG characters in movies, I think the most impressive one I've seen is the scene with a young Michael Douglas scene at the start of Ant Man, although I'm watching this through Youtube compression, it might look notably worse on the BluRay. To be fair they actually had Michael Douglas to work with, so that makes it a little easier than fully recreating Peter Cushing.

Probably identically, it could have theoretically just fired shots at the bridge like that alternate TIE does in the theatrical cut. I'm not even sure that shot isn't even in the movie, the TIE might have just been removed.

Needless to say, I'm thrilled that the EU got tossed. Made doing a catch up hella easy.

What? The New Yorker review actually said that AotC and RotS were the two best entries in the entire series. He actually did. He wrote a piece about that opinion no less, in which he ham-fistedly defends the prequel's degenerate appeal to superficiality an improvement on the series.

His whole review smacked of someone who needs to be explicitly told how to feel about something, rather than empathizing with the shitty decisions that a bunch of people had to saddle themselves with for the greater good, never even considering how the same things might impact him would that he were in their shoes.

He laments the lack of emotional impact the death of the characters has - and I can only imagine the emotional impact he was looking for was a camera shot at 1/4 speed, with some picturesque lense flaring and a violin piece playing in the background while you watch them draw their last breath. Ugh.

Bodhi's death hit me particularly hard. From the moment he joined up he never stopped giving of himself and consistently put himself in mortal danger for the greater good, and he was snuffed out in an instant by a random grenade. Because that's the shitty reality of what they signed up for, and you have that pushed in your face. Even the sorrowful but determined look on the captain's face and sound in his voice as he prepares to ram the star destroyer, knowing full well that it will be to his death, but it was something that had to be done - I felt sincerely sorry for him in that moment; for the pilots that wouldn't pull up because they wanted to get through shield if they could.

Like damn. Coupled with Catalyst, Jyn Erso is the most tragic character in the series. Everything bad happens to her.
 
Will do a better write up tomorrow, initial reaction is I loved it and thought it was way better than TFA. Maybe second best SW movie. Maybe. Also thought Tarkin as a whole was a good effect that worked probably 80% of the time.

I'd rather the movie be about real people. Like Han Solo and Luke who is a regular person trying to live up to his destiny. Fully trained Jedi are a snore fest and not good storytelling if they are your main characters. I also hate super hero movies so that is my personal taste. I like stories about real relatable people, not power fantasies.
 
Okay I'm all on board the CGI actors train now. What they did with Peter Cushing/Tarkin was just downright stunning. My mind was nearly convinced he was still alive somehow. Carrie Fisher's touchup was pretty amazing too.

Lots of things in this movie were amazing, I quite enjoyed it.
 
Every character was an absolute waste IMO. The villain was the only person in the movie with a clear and reasonable narrative.

Tone was cool.

Robot was jokes.

Darth Vader was a Jedi.

Soundtrack was really meh.

Creepy CGI.

These are feelings I have.

Well the is a crapload of things from the trailer that weren't in the movie which makes me think the movie went through major reshooting and recutting during the last few months of production.
I suspect it may be like A New Hope were the first rough edit was awful and they had to bend it into shape through reshoots and editing.

Bodhi was the best, I think. Maybe I just love the actor, but I really think he made the most of the role. I agree with the above poster about his death scene.
 
The Forest Whiticker character made me feel like I was watching some parallel universe crossover between SW and Mad Max. I would have much rather watched that movie lol.

Just came back from watching it.

Jesus fuck that third act. That ending. No words. I was pretty much in tears - my friends too. My god.

Those last 30 or 40 minutes alone are better than the prequel trilogy. Hell, this is pretty much the prequel I never knew I wanted until I watched it.

And to the guy that said earlier in this thread that we're not going to be able to see ANH the same way after this - you're right, my friend.
 
The pure terror of the Rebel troopers when that lightsaber ignites was AMAZING. Vader as a terrifying monster was not something I expected them to pull off and they nailed it. Loved the film overall, though it started slow and no crawl and the lack of John Williams score probably contributed to that.
 
On some level it had to end bleak like that. At least once and awhile in the series. It's great they all came together but at the end of it all it was a uphill fight to begin with. I was surprised dude in the first 10 killed the messenger like that. Like the movie has this very "it is what it is " tone and I wouldn't be surprised that's part of what Disney might have tried to curve a bit. Pilot that tried to prove he was good ate the grenade, Donnie out here meditating his way through gun fire just to take an L 3 seconds later. That hallway Vader fight was like some monster movie shit lol had dudes crying when he appeared in front of them.


Would not be surprised if the script was meant to be a bit more grounded.
 
If they hadn't have sat on the shot of Tarkin and Leia so long it would have worked perfectly. The squadron pilots from Ep4 worked much better.

I feel like the sound design was lacking a bit too. All the star wars movies had REALLY good sound effects. Even ep2 had some incredible moments in sound. This was more by the books I felt.
 
I liked it but didn't love it. I'll give it one more rewatch but I don't see myself going to the theaters 3x like I did with TFA.

-First half of the movie was long. Seemed really drawn out.
-K2SO was cool
-Wasn't feeling Donnie Yen. He had a funny one liner but spent the rest of the movie just doing the same force prayer over and over and over and over and over and over again. He had one badass fight scene and that was pretty much it. Did I mention that he kept repeating that force prayer over and over and over and over again?
-Most of the main rebels really had no story. They were just along for the ride.
-Re-using tired Star Wars tropes:
-have to take down the shield to complete X objective
-map room scene to set up the final act
-We aren't there yet with the full CGI characters. Really took me out of the movie
-Final act was amazing
-Vader in the hallway was stuff of nightmares and very cool - seriously I have had this exact nightmare many times since I was a kid
-My wife had a decent question as a very casual Star Wars fan - if Vader needs the occasional Bacta Bath to stay alive, then what is the suit for? Best I could come up with was that the suit helps him breathe and to be intimidating and the bacta is to cool the burns.

Overall I'd give it about a 6.5/10.

Just got back. So great to finally get a prequel movie.

It almost makes it feel like Episode IV is now a two part movie.

I definitely wasn't stunned by it. I'm not sure how much of my reaction is due to having such strong memories of the original actor/character though. Maybe if they did it for a new character I would be more convinced.
 
Oh my fucking god!! I loved it so much man. I had a feeling I would like it hearing all of the praise these last few days but goddamn, walking out of that theatre I had goosebumps. That was my favorite movie of the year without question. I'm pretty sure I liked it more than episode 7 and I loved that movie. I gotta collect my thoughts for a second here lol.
 
I think Vader uses the bacta and the dark side to try and unburn himself but is never quite powerful enough to make it last. Read that in one of the books and makes sense to me.

the ending was always going to be bittersweet. we all knew where this was going.

the scene of Jyn and Cassian sitting on the beach and accepting their fate was incredible.

The fact that they didn't start making out was huge. I kept waiting for that moment and it never came. They just hugged thinking "We did it"

The guy certainly didn't move like Cushing. I thought the CG looked weird and very uncanny valley for me, but it was a big move forward.
 
I get the complaints, but the last 30 minutes were pure movie bliss to me.

I love star wars ship battles, and this movie had that in spades/

Super excited to see some deleted scenes

The squadron pilots were reworked actual footage though right? They reworked the same lines they had in ANH, so there was no reason to recreate them. Maybe I got tricked though, I dunno for sure.

Yeah I feel like it was close but something was off with both Tarkin and Leia too. I mean look at this young Tony Stark from Civil War.

They absolutely nailed it. Completely blends in seamlessly. It just looks real. Tarkin was a huge undertaking admittedly but they got it so right, it just feels like that final rendering was lacking. It has that plasticky CGI feeling whereas the skin texture on Stark and the lighting was 100% believable. The lighting and texturing etc on Tarkin and Leia just felt off quite a bit. I want them to improve this because they modelled Tarkin excellently and the voice actor was good enough for it to have worked if it had also worked visually, just needs another pas and some fine tuning... bluray edition hopefully.
