Finally venturing into the spoiler thread. Gunna need the Imax viewing tomorrow to collect how I feel about this film.

Had a good time though. Good start for the spin-off canon.

Other scene that didn't make into the final cut

Really? I was looking forward to that one :(

Wow. What a goddamned dumpster fire.

Can't be worse than TFA brandon, it can't.

That's not what he was asking. He wanted to know if it was digital makeup or full CGI.

Does an stand in actor being there make it digital make-up?
Michael Douglas in Ant-Man was digital make up because he was actually there but here we have stand in actors that only vaguely look like Cushing or Fisher so the whole face had to be replaced.

Fuck me guys, this movie was just not good. First half was a chore and the intercutting of character introductions was not cool at all -- the only entrance that had weight was Vaders -- and let's be REAL here people, that was nothing but fan service. The only thematically consistent moment was a single dialogue moment with Diego Luna before they left for the mission, and the only cool action scene was at the last 60 seconds.

Am I taking crazy pills? The war scene, while very pretty, was entirely drab -- none of the characters had any wants or desires -- a key component to any action sequence (Vader *wanted* the data during his epic final scene, thus making it the only segment that mattered).

There are some fundamental storytelling devices that's missing, and don't get me started on the god damn plot contrivances.

I am so dissapointed. Gary Whitta, you were the chosen one!

That Cruiser being able to push one Star Destroyer into another kinda annoyed and bothered me. That seemed like something that shouldn't happen, even in the Star Wars movies that kinda play fast and loose with physics/science.

Where do you got this from? I think its Mustafar, too, but I would like a confirmation somehow

Are there a bunch of other lava planets that Vader would feel the need to setup base on? This is why I hate the bullshit titles on the planets in this movie, it discourages critical thinking and paying attention. Lucas would have never allowed that crap, we're going to Edou. Okay, I got it you don't need to then show the name when they arrive.

I always thought Vader had a dark sense of humor in the OT, and his line here seemed consistent with that to me.

"Don't act so surprised your highness, you weren't on any mercy mission this time" - Dripping with sarcasm.

"I find your lack of faith disturbing. As you wish." - Releases him as if to say that he's just messing around.

"Your powers are weak, old man." - Taunting Obi-wan.

His character in ANH seems consistent with someone who would playfully threaten an officer with a pun.

concur. I loved that line.

yeah agree. and when the one destroyer cuts through the other... it's like, wait, it has enough force to just rip through? wouldn't they just collide and start pushing each other?

Well the Star Destroyer was disabled by the Y-Wings and they are in the vaccum of space so a medium sized transport managing to slowly push it like that isn't that much of a stretch.

Yep, was worried I was alone posted similar frustrations and disappointments here last night after watching.

I thought that disabling it before hand was enough to make it believable. As in making it something that isn't normally possible.

Seems from the few impressions I'm reading in this thread is that the first half leaves to be desired, but once the action set pieces kick in, it's enjoyable?

it was enough for me. You can't overthink science fiction, guys.

first third is cool, but slow.

last two thirds are fucking winning.

I really enjoyed it. It has its flaws (like all the quick scene changes in the beginning) but I thought it was good. I can't possibly see why one would call it a dumpster fire. If you're getting that upset over a totally decent movie I don't want to tell you.

So were there any other Rebels references I missed? At the base on Yavin IV I heard them calling for "General Syndulla", but that's all I caught.

From /r/StarWarsLeaks:

  • The Ghost can be seen in no fewer than four shots, the two from the TV spots, one on Yavin 4 the first time we visit it, and another space battle shot, from the perspective of Admiral Raddus' bridge.
  • VCX-100 is said over the intercom, which is the model number of the Ghost.
  • "General Syndulla" is said over the intercom
  • Chopper shows up (only one I missed) reportedly in the scene where Mon Monthma is learning about the Scarif attack.
  • Sato's CR-90, "Liberator", can be seen in two space battle shots. The clearest one is the shot of the TIEs striking Raddus' command ship.
  • Hammerhead Cruisers
  • Steve Blum (voice of Zeb) clearly continued his moonlighting as Imperial Stormtroopers.

I found it boring to the end really(minus the final 2 minutes). There are no real stakes or investment as the plotting and development failed to hook me into the characters and their motivations, thus the stakes were empty. Lots of explosions, a toothless fuckwit of a villain orchestrating a bungled defensive strat, and well...maybe you will like the explosions. Plenty of GAFFERS seemed to.

Just came back from watching it. Every one feels very under developed.

Which I guess makes sense since

SPOILERS

they're essentially all cannon fodder

My brother fell asleep watching it till the big climactic battle. :/

Awesome!

Didn't realize the Hammerhead was a Rebels reference. I figured that design predated Rebels in some form or another.

Definitely gonna have to keep an eye out for the Ghost and Chopper.

Holy shit, that movie was absolutely fantastic. I would rank it so far above The Force Awakens it's not even funny. Felicity Jones sold Jyn Erso as a character and her relationship with Mads Mikkelsen as her father nearly brought me to tears. Diego Luna played Cass incredibly nuanced to show both the good and the bad of the rebellion. Donnie Yen was absolutely badass and brought the spiritual side of the Force down to a somewhat more grounded level. Krennic was played perfectly to a tee, and his character was so much more richer after I read Star Wars Catalyst so I can see why this frustration and greed feeds him and pushed him to the point of having his own creation kill him. Everyone's death was so well executed (no pun intended).

Now let's talk about the fan service because my god was it well done. The resurrection of Grand Moff Tarkin was incredible. He was more in this movie than he was in Episode IV and it totally fits. Despite his large role in Catalyst, I really thought he would still be little more than a cameo, but his large role was so needed to bring that insight into how the Empire operates and how even within it there are factions fighting against each other. I really thought the CG would bother me, but I was endlessly impressed with how real it looked even with the close up.

Darth Vader was the next round of massive fan service and my goodness they did him justice. From the gigantic shadow casting over Krennic to his line "Do not choke over your aspirations" while he's Force choking him was so freaking good. Of course, the killer moment was at the end when he slaughters the rebels before they escape. The subdued yet powerful Force powers he showcased were incredible. He didn't need to flip around or do some prequel shit. All he needed was to deflect the lasers with his lightsaber, maybe push a dude or two into the celing and walls, and perhaps strike through the heart of a rebel through the door. So. Freaking. Good.

Finally, the crunch at the end. Opening the doors and there she is. Princess Leia. Jimmy Smits's Bail Organa was fantastically implemented and to be honest I was wondering if that was all we would hear about Leia as "someone [he] trusts with [his] life" (plus the sick Obi Wan reference). I also really wasn't sure if we would see her face, and if we were to see her face how good the CGI would be. But man, they sold it. Her face wasn't as convincing as Tarkin's but that may have had to do with the brighter lighting, but my goodness the way they conducted that scene was pitch perfect.

God I love this movie. I left the theater with a huge smile on my face. 9.5/10

Tugboat in space!

It's not just that the Cruiser was able to push an object thousands of times its mass, but that it was able to push it to a velocity fast enough to make it cut through another Star Destroyer.

A tugboat can push/pull a freighter, but if that tugboat tries to guide Freighter A into Freighter B, then A isn't going to rip B into shreds like that. At best they will grind together and bounce off one another.

you know the one thing I thought was hilarious was how the rebels attacked the base where the woman's dad was. And there's this big ass empire ship on the platform but they somehow managed to miss it and managed to kill whats his face.
