I wasn't sure about this either. Was that actually Mustafar? Or just some other lava planet? If it's really Mustafar, why would he want to hang out there of all places?

No that was Sullust. It was the planet that was introduced in Battlefront (EA). It is where Tie Fighters and other imperial machinery is produced.

Anyone else have a problem with Vader's voice?

You can tell Jones was struggling with some of his lines as his voice sounded like it was giving out

X-Wings are military vehicles while Snowspeeders are converted civilian craft used for industrial cargo hauling (which is why they have a cable gun or whatever) with the armaments attached by Rebel engineers. Maybe their blasters are just weaker, that's my own internal explanation.

The old West End Games Star Wars RPG, which turned into the bible that EU writers used, explained this situation pretty clearly. There's a bunch of different scales that combat operates on in that game, with humans being the smallest scale, and the Death Star being the largest. Attacking something with a larger scale than you would make it easier for you to hit, but much harder for you to cause damage. And vice-versa. Speeders (snowspeeders included) are just above humans in scale, while starfighters are two steps above that again (with walkers in the middle).

In other words, speeders can easily hit a walker but would have a hard time damaging them. X-Wings would have a harder time hitting a walker, but would devastate it if they did. What we see in Rogue One is entirely consistent with what I remember from the old RPG, which isn't surprising since so much of classic Star Wars lore was built upon it.

They should do one of these side story prequels for each of the original films.

pre-ROTJ, given the right writer and director, could be the GOAT Star Wars film. You could almost make it a series of films.

I also love that the gave canon to the Death Star being able to travel in hyperspace.

Should somebody tell him? I don't want to tell him...

I know they exist I just don't want to acknowledge them

yeah a nice origin story of Vader, how he met Luke's mother and turned evil, how before all this mess started.

he could even be friends with Obi-Wan then fall out with him. that is great I should let Disney know my Idea.
maybe throw in some nods to the original trilogy. could even talk about the clone wars have yoda in there too.

would be nice, might watch those.

He sounded better in this movie than he does in Rebels, enough that it doesn't bother me. It's mostly noticeable in the way he slurs some of his words, but in Rebels his voice sounds quite a bit thinner as well. Still, even an old James Earl Jones does a better Vader than any impersonator could due to his very unique voice.

A microcosm of the waste of those scenes is Bodhi's mind reading torture scene. So, the alien can read minds (which means Bodhi should have been cleared as a good guy) but can also make you lose your mind? But, despite the alien reading his mind and presumably knowing he told the truth, Bodhi is still locked up and has kinda lost his mind...until a stranger says his name and occupation?

That was a really weird sequence to me too. It felt like they spent the money for the CG and toy molds so didnt have the balls to cut it in the editing room. The whole plot point is dropped moments later lol

I actually liked the characters too and wanted to know more about them, the movie denied me that

Dude's 85, give him a break.

I said I didn't have a problem with it. I meant to be alluding to his age in my comment. I'm happy he was able to return for this movie. If this depiction of Vader is his last, I think it is good and a service to the wonderful work he has done in the role.

No, it was Mustafar.

Huh, color wise it looked like Sullust.

But, I guess it does make sense Vader would be on Mustafar. Since that planet is a monument to his failure which makes his Dark Side resolve stronger.

yes

ever notice how much more Vader started straight up MURDERING people in empire?

how about a Vader-focused movie that takes place between ANH and ESB? If you thought Vader was pissed BEFORE ANH, imagine after...

They're doing that in the Vader comic series which I have heard good things about.

I guess most of that story is covered by the Star Wars comic and Kieron Gillen's Darth Vader comic that ended recently.

I hope we get a Vader origin story spin off. would be great.

Read the Marvel Vader Comics. They are excellent. Lots of great moments in it.

Like Vader's present
Hey I have a present for you from the Empire. Its the only remaining piece of Alderaan. Fall the fuck in line.

The visual guide says that it's Mustafar and that Palpatine makes him live there. In other words, Palpatine is trying to keep Vader at Top Pissed Off Levels all the time.

Theory: It's a place where he experienced a great deal of trauma and negative emotion, meditating on that hate and anger focuses him and strengthens his ties to the Dark Side of the Force.

Yeah, I think it would make total sense for him to have a base on a lava planet. It's where he was "born" so to speak.

I honestly didn't think it was Jones. I thought, "I wonder who they got to do Vader's voice this time around?"

This is basically what the Darth Vader comic is about. Just look up the part when he learns that he has a son.

he should keep reminding him how his mum died and Padme straight up willed herself to die because she realised he was a fucking twat.

or just get jar jar to move in with him that would do it.

That last Vader scene of him choking dudes in a hallway to get to the Death Star plans... My God!

That should have been the entirety of Episode III.. extended out to 3 hours.
3 hours of Vader straight up murdering people and making Dad Jokes.

(No one really answered this question last time I asked... Did Vader really build a Fortress of DOOM over the hill where he was burnt to a crisp? Really?)

Did Batman not make his base of operations where he was traumatized as a child?

It did feel off.

A lot of the returning characters had something off to them, from CG Leia and Tarkin (seriously, got some hardcore uncanny valley stuff whenever Tarkin was on screen). Vader's voice sounded off in someplaces, and the guys from Mos Eisley also looked off.

He basically does the first thing in the Vader comic, forcing Vader to go to Tatooine to "negotiate" with Jabba. Vader gets pissed off and slaughters a group of Tusken Raiders just because he hates them. The Tuskens believe he's a dark god and they start performing human sacrifices to him.

That is a better way to look at it. I still think this make's the beginning of ANH unintentionally hilarious.

"We are on a diplomatic mis-"

"Bitch, I just saw you!"
Lmao. I thought this same thing last night. I'm not a fan of how that ending makes the beginning of A New Hope look. But this movie was un-enjoyable enough I sadly lump it in now with 1-3---it's a fun thing, but it isn't canon in my mind.

I do wonder if they will bring Chirrut and Baze back. They felt so out of place and storyless in this film, that I can see them come back in another sidestory. the world needs more of Baze's laser m60 for sure.

Anyone else notice how little hand to hand action this movie has for a star wars, heck a hollywood action movie? Jyn roughed up some dudes in the beginning, and there is Donnie and robot, but I'm surprised that there was zero physical struggle between Orson and the main characters. Always a blaster distance away.

Guess it wouldn't make sense when Orson isn't really a fighter (he does absorb blaster shots like a champ though), but that hasn't stopped tom cruise from fighting some old dude in MI:4.

One thing I will say about the movie is I had no idea when it was going to end after Scarif was destroyed.

I wasn't sure if it would end on Vader's ship coming in, Vader pulling out his lightsaber, Leia's ship leaving, etc. I really thought the movie would cut to black as soon as Vader pulled out his saber

Would definitely read their comic

So, for people who introduce new viewers with the OT instead of the PT, is Rogue One now the movie you will start with or still ANH?

I actually liked the first two thirds a little more than the final third, aside from the awesome Vader stuff. Thought it strayed too far from the main characters in terms of development. The set piece with Krennik and Jyn felt too convenient.

I thought TFA did a much better job turning stormtroopers into a threat and R1 made them a complete joke. Wish there would have been more of a threat earlier in the film instead of troopers being mowed siren around every corner. And their voices sounded terrible.

But they did some pretty damn cool stuff with the ground and air battles.

Thought the two main leads did a great job. Jyn performed a million times better than in the trailers.

I still say TFA. ANH can be way too show for people who are trying to get into SW. Though ANH is still my favorite.

Clint and Eli Wallach recording new lines for The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was noticeably terrible, but still neat in a way.

This was noticeably off, still neat, still menacing. Worked out great!

Has it been discussed yet why Jyn's father:

1) Could send a hologram message on a data drive, but couldn't just send the Death Star plans in the first place?

2) Why Jyn's father waited until the Death Star was pretty much complete before he messaged anyone? If he designed a flaw in it, those blueprints they stole would've reflected the flaw years prior to it's completion.

These two things really bug me.

Oh yeah...one more thing. Why did Vader summon Krennik? I thought Krennik was visiting him to rat on Tarkin, but Vader mentions he summoned him. Not sure I understood why.

ANH, I don't understand all this nonsense about viewing order. You watch in order of release like how everyone else experienced it.
Yep. This is what I did with my girlfriend, and will be doing soon with my son.

First time viewers, always start with ANH. Once you've seen it in release order, then you can machete that shit up.

Or not, b/c machete viewing is awful.

1. He didn't have the plans, he told Saw/Jyn where they were kept.

2. It probably is near impossible to get a message out under the intense guard he is under and the fact he would need to talk someone into defecting to get the message out. It is understandable this was the first chance he had.

It's the best starting point technically but some people get bored with the beginning.

1. The plans were on Scarif while he was on Eadu. Plus even if he was on Scarif he probably didn't have clearance to go in and just grab them.

2. Probably waited until he knew his flaw made it in, or until someone he could trust was willing to switch sides

Its pretty crazy how much stuff was cut from the commercials and trailers. Guess those rumors about it getting heavily reworked were true. Wonder what the original was like.

1 - didn't have the storage space and/or didn't want to reveal it to the messenger in case he was caught

2 - maybe just didn't have the opportunity/accomplice. He was not trusted by the empire (if you read the book) so would have been under heavy scrutiny

I guess I can understand those a bit, but Krennik states he wants all transmissions Urso ever sent to be pulled so he could comb through them. So this guy they don't trust has been allowed to send transmissions out at least. Though if he didn't have an accomplice, it is a question of who he would send them to.

These two things really bug me.

1) The Death Star plans were locked away on Scarif under heavy security. The plans were also massive in size.

2) Probably didn't want to raise suspicion, and decided to act while the Death Star wasn't fully operational yet.

Not sure if its mentioned, but loved the little character beat with Bodhi when Gerrera started doing his Blue Velvet breathing thing and Bodhi looked shook as fuck. Those Vader memories.
