Rogue One: A Star Wars Story |OT| They rebel - SPOILERS

No more infiltration missions guys. A Real Hero said so.

If Rey sneaks into a First Order station in Episode VIII, it'll practically just be like a snowball of Rogue One and New Hope with a dash of all the other SW movies on the side when she takes out a lightsaber, as those films also had lightsabers.

In Episode IV they do this because they were involuntarily pulled into the Death Star and had to disguise themselves as cover.
In Rogue One they voluntarily do this to steal something and neither movie feels even remotely similar.
That distinction did not stop it feeling very similar to me.

Don't know if it's been posted in here but Giacchino did an alternative pun filled tracklist that's in the soundtrack booklet.

1. A Krennic Condition
2. Jyn and Scare It
3. Jyncarcerated
4. Going To See Saw
5. That New Death Star Smell
6. Jedha Call Saw
7. When Ambush Comes To Shove
8. Erso Facto
9. Go Do, That Eadu, That You Do, So Well
10. Have a Choke and a Smile
11. Erso in Vain
12. Takes One To Rogue One
13. World's Worst Vacation Destination
14. Scarif Tactics
15. Bazed and Confused
16. Switch Hunt
17. Transmission Impossible
18. Live and Let Jedi

Is Jyn a Mary Sue
Is Diego Luna a whatever the male version of that is, uh Gary Stu

No, because they actually felt like characters that failed and grew. They were not fan-fiction inserts that were automatically good at everything for no inexplicable reason and loved by everyone. Also, they died.

Damn it, I love him. Too bad he was given four weeks to write a score for a haphazardly pieced together film with bland characters leading to no interesting themes whatsoever and mostly just randomness.

It's not a bad score, but his weakest output for me by a country mile and I don't even really blame it on him.

I'm waiting for the droid spin-off starring C-3PO, R2-D2, BB-8, and K-2SO.
As long as BB-8 is running the crew, as he should be, I'm down to clown.

Yeah. I just wish having flaws and not being perfect made Jyn interesting. She was terribly uncharismatic.

I hope that's what happens. One of these days we're going to finally get that KOTOR film.

pls

Speaking as a guy who's favorite piece of Star Wars Media is KOTOR, I would be skeptical on how they could turn a 30-40 hour RPG into a quality 2 hour film. A lot of the game's best moments is the side quests/companion quests that really flesh out the characters. Trying to do that in one film would be very difficult I would imagine.

-Vader recuperates and is PISSED
-Imperial troops drive Rebel forces from Yavin 4 aka they FUCK THEM UP
-Rebels relocate to ice world of Hoth
-Darth Vader, obsessed with finding young Skywalker, GOES ON A FUCKING RAMPAGE. Picture the final hallway lightsaber scene of RO but for 40 minutes.

That's a movie. EASY.

Aren't the comics covering, or have already covered this space in-between, though?

That would be a really long hallway.

Aren't Star Destroyers supposed to be able to bombard planets the same way the Death Star does in this movie? They seemed to portray the turbolazer like a supernuke in this movie, but I'm preeeeeetty sure Star Destroyers by themselves are already capable of much worse devastation than what we see from the death star in this movie.

I was more talking along the lines of having movies just set in that era. The Old Republic to me is infinitely more interesting than the Skywalker era.

Though a side saga covering a slightly condensed version of the fall and redemption of Revan would be neat, I think.

this. Death star 2 didn't have the same flaw.

Also, it was bigger.
Also - even during construction - it was protected by an energy shield.
Also - even during construction - the weapons systems were fully functional.

The only 'flaw' was that it was ... still under construction.

Also, it was a trap :P

Yeah, the real flaw of the second Death Star was Vader and the Emperor's overconfidence. Neither thought is was possible that a small strike team could take out the shield protecting the Death Star, certainly not when they were prepared for them. With the shield up the rebels wouldn't have been able to do a thing.

It was pretty much a series of unlikely events all occurring at the same time that undid the entire plan. The rebel strike team was captured but the Ewoks happened to launch a massive attack on the shield generator. And even then the rebels had to hold off attack from both the fleet and the Death Star long enough for the shield to go down and for them to get fighters deep into the Death Star to take it out. And while it's probably not canon anymore in the EU the death of the Emperor hurt the Imperial fleet in a major way, he was essentially controlling them in a method similar to Bastila Shan's battle meditation.

It was a big chain of events that led to it. I also liked that Rogue One added more of a reason for the glaring weakness of the Death Star than just an oversight.

brandon83, I gotta revoke that tag from you, man.

So easy to get.
So easy to lose.

I think you guys to give the soundtrack a chance by listening to it separatly.

I'm getting it from Amazon today. And yeah, it's the first SW score I hadn't heard before seeing the movie. I know that can make a difference, but I do recall several times where the music didn't land, especially the opening title and beyond Jyn having a theme, it felt lacking in thematics compared to his other stuff. I'm sure it'll grow on me, but I could feel how disjointed and rushed it was due to the production schedule and the film's actual editing.

I'd kill for a saga covering the Mandalorian wars.

NOW THAT is a KOTOR movie that could work and be done well. Actually seeing how
Revan disobeying the council and rounding up his troops, getting a vast amount of Jedi to follow him, the battle of Malachor V, meeting The Exile before she became...well the exile lol.

I put it in spoilers just in case. But KOTOR movies about events we never actually seen in the games would be fantastic.

...hell, maybe even a KOTOR 3 movie if we never get the game. :(

Speaking of the score, does anyone have any favorite tracks?

Currently rocking out to "Rogue One", "Hope", "The Imperial Suite" and the "Guardians of the Whills Suite".

Ah we got KotOR 3, 4, 5, and 6 sir.

man i love that destruction of that first deathstar 'hit'.

Reminds me of those simulations of asteroids hitting the earth. The destruction is just 'wow'.

Sad to see you didn't enjoy it. I really liked it. The characters actually worked a lot better for me than I expected after Godzilla. Really liked Cassian and Chirrut especially.

Lucasfilm cares about the comics.

This movie should put to an end the idea that non-film canonical sources aren't taken into account.

Yep.

The comics have the writers and editors from Marvel going to Lucasfilm to talk to the Story Group about their plans for the year ahead and to make sure it all fits in and doesn't screwup anyone's plans. It's not going to be scrapped, they're kinda going ham on having a more cohesive universe now.

I mean they were a step above Aaron Johnson and Olsen, yeah. Not a tall order! Still the worst set of characters in a SW movie for me. I'm also bummed that I didn't like it, but I couldn't get over the bad storytelling, empty characters, jarring editing, inability to care about the drama or what's happening due to the bland characters, and the take me out of the movie entirely CG Tarkin and Leia.

I think Rian Johnson's gonna nail it in a year, though.
