When you first see her, there's a brief window where she looks pretty good. And then

And then her mouth moves.

I think I prefer nitpicking the technical execution because it allows me to gloss right over the more ethical question of why we needed to digitally resurrect a long dead man for no other real reason than the fiction's CONTINUITY.

I honestly think it's when the CGI characters move. Like Tarkin was almost believable until he would move or start talking and then the illusion would break.

Millisecond .2 looked good but she looked pretty awful at .5 milliseconds. It got pretty good later on in the movie, though, somewhere around .8.

Man I needed another scene or two of Vader just wrecking people that was sick.

I'm kinda surprised he didn't tear people into two and shit.

When he did the door thing from ep 1 I was like damn

More than enough killing and violence. He was fucking menacing. Those rebels knew they were dead af

I think that's why I'm not as forgiving toward it. I can't even figure out why it was necessary to begin with. The ending would have worked without Leia or at least seeing her face. I actually liked the shot of the back of her standing there, but the rest was yeesh. Every time Tarkin appeared was jarring and again, he didn't do or say anything remotely important. So you're just left with shitty CG.

They could have did far away shots of them talking, in fact I think just getting a pulled back shot of Leia would have been better. Just could have worked so much better under more efficient direction. Like a wide shot of her looking out the window, could have even still be facing us but the CGI wouldn't have been shoved down our throats.

Yeah, she looks fine, but I don't think they did a good job of animating her talking. Feels like she moves too fast. I have to watch it again to explain, but you can tell there's not enough/or too many frames of animation going on.

Just saw the film. It was...okay.

*snip*

Dude. That's what I said last night. 60 seconds at the end of the film wasn't enough to warrant the chore that was the previous 2 hours.

Tarkin should only have had two scenes MAX -- and quite frankly, could have been entirely replaceable. It's just fan service (filled to the brim with uncanny valley, ugh).

Crap villain, underdeveloped support characters, forgettable score, and a war scene that did not have the gravitas as one would expect from the franchise -- it was all over the place with random characters running in circles.

Too many plot contrivances. The night Jyn finds her father is the night he dies, and he still manages to get some last words before he passes (same situation with Donnie Yen -- they really doubled up on that cliche!).

And we got subplots that amount to nothing -- and any conflict that could arise from them were immediately squashed and forgotten about.

Fuck the cameos, they did not feel organic at all, especially when they're cutting away from the main set pieces.

The more I think about it, the sadder I get.

Everything about his arrival was fantastic. "Vader will take care of the fleet" had me thinking "what the hell could he possibly do?"

And then his Destroyer jumped right in front of the rebels and took a few of them out right there. That's gonna be a great bail out/banned GIF. Bish's face appearing out of nowhere.

When he was onboard slaughtering the rebels, I also appreciated that his movements were still pretty stiff and in-line with the OT Vader fights. He was definitely more mobile than ANH but he didn't come near the PT fights. Easily explained by his injuries, of course.

That's what it is! I was trying to think of why I disliked Tarkin so much and that's it. In comparison to everything else Tarkin's framerate feels way off.

Darth Vaders' butler is not Snoke.

Snoke is Snoke

He's just some weasely weirdo who stepped into a power vaccuum and manipulated young angry confused fascist wanna-bes.

He doesn't need (or deserve) some big earth-shattering twisty tie-in to some other characters' past to explain that.

Seriously, people act like Star Wars is some Shyamalan shit just because Lucas pulled "I am your father" out of his ass in 1978. It's more or less a simple, straightforward fairytale.

The Big Bad Wolf isn't related to Maleficent somehow, yunno?

Bobby is Snoke confirmed, thats why he wants you to stop with the theories heh.

Have you not seen those gifs?

It's like at every opportunity he has he uses it to be a total dick.

Like, it's not even funny. Dude's a bully.

Fair enough - guess I just have a warped sense of humor. Those gifs aren't even the worst if I'm recalling correctly. He straight up murders a lot of people.

Was it an Interdictor. only saw it for a second

Yeah, Chopper's just a fucking dickslit of a character. There's almost zero redeeming about him.

No, it was the Devastator. Same Star Destroyer you see come over the top of the screen in the first seconds of Star Wars.

I thought Tarkin looked fine. In some scenes he was totally convincing. Leia... not so much. It was kind of a bummer for the movie to end on that.

Just out of cinema, no one else to chat with so here is my take:

Amazing I loved it:
The start, with the dust rings around the planet was a cool new way for you to marvel at the size and scope.
Funny but not hitting you over the head with humor.
Great action at the end, amazing battle.
Looked fantastic, really got me pumped.
Fan shout outs were subtle enough not to remove me from the moment, unlike EP7's fan service.

Things not so cool:
Zero need for a poorly done CGI Tarkin - like would anyone really have an issue with a similar looking actor? or just no real need to have Tarkin at all.
Ditto for CGI Leia, just shoot from behind, no need to see a weird CGI face.
Perhaps a bit slow at the start.
Personally found everything before the Beach planet to be lit very darkly - i assume on purpose.

The overriding feeling coming away was happy excitement wanting to see it again and talk about it. All the things I did not get to so this time last year - EP7 - shown up for the crap it really was.

I also like that we finally got some light shed that the Rebellion's actions weren't all on the up and up either.

Does anyone think if Thrawn is still alive during the events of Rogue One? If so, why do you guys think he was not in the movie?

Wasn't he cut from canon?

I actually prefer that trilogy of books to what TFA began...

Edit: just looked up, had no idea he was being re-introduced into a new novel and as part of rebels. Kind of makes me want to re-read the trilogy

So just got back and man I really loved it. This was better to me than The Force Awakens. When Donnie Yen's character was dying, my eyes just started watering, I couldn't help it. If this is what we can expect from these self contained stories, then bring it on. I'll be going to watch it again in a few days.

I agree but I'm not sure those making the film do

Its especially weird because they could have easily just recast him and still pulled it off convincingly.

Hell, get Charles Dance to drop some weight and he'd easily knock it out of the part.

Tears were not in my eyes but his purpose felt complete. Yeah, I don't know what people are talking about with "underdeveloped characters." Every character in the group has a purpose and reason for being there and every single one seems fulfilled by the end if not met with a tragic ending.

Honestly I don't get why they can't just recast and live with it.

So whats the deal man, you sticking around now? B/C seeing you smackdown talking points is always fun.

Eh. Doubtful. I basically came back because I'd seen the flick for the paper and of the alternatives available for freely speaking about spoilers, this was the best one. Now that everyone's seeing the thing, I might retreat back to my little hobbit hole.

Not really that big a deal anyway - this place churns forward as it always has whether I'm here ramming my head into the spokes or not.

Yeah, good then that its not so hyperbolical bad, right? :)

What

It's noticeable, and distracting. It's not BAD. It's just hard to understand how they couldn't get the mouths right on these digital recreations.

This isn't a hyperbolic stance I'm taking. They swung big and didn't park it in the stands. Doesn't mean it's not IMPRESSIVE. it is. It also doesn't work the way they wanted. If it did, the conversation wouldn't even be happening, at least not on this level.
