Someone will have to explain one day why dark empire is so appreciated. It's probably one of the worst things I have ever read.
It was problematic at the time and doesn't hold up.
I think it's relevancy is because it, and Heir, was the first piece of post RotJ fiction. The post '83 period before DE and Heir was just a barren wasteland for Star Wars so it was akin to a drop of water in the desert.
And the concept was cool, especially if you were a teenager at the time. Luke playing with the Dark Side, testing its limits. And it had really good art.
The execution was pretty poor though.
