Final Fantasy XV SPOILER THREAD

Solheim? Starscourge light eating particles? Ifrit destroying a city thousands of years ago? Lol this game. 8 chapters of nothing and this information gets tossed to a guide book.

If Noctis is so strong then why didn't he just rebel and destroy both the Astrals and the Starscourge instead of committing suicide? In every other FF this is what would have happened. But since SE had to make sure that there is no room for sequels and that the logo has some meaning, they made Noctis accept his role as a pawn of the gods :/ :/
Arent the Astrals immortal anyway? Shiva was already "killed" once.

Lol yeah. I had to do a research to understand the game story very well. It seems like it wasn't even enough since it was on the guide book.

I may have understood the story wrong:

-Isn,t the Starscourge basically Ardyn? So to destroy him, Noctis absolutely needs to summon the past kings and pay the blood price, or else Ardyn would just keep coming back from the beyond, no?

(I personally always call that last summon Knight of the Round, sounds more classic.)

In-universe maybe. That whole thing just seems so arbitrary though :/ In every other JRPG they would have found a better way, like sealing him with something or trapping him in another dimension or whatever.

It's a shame this wasn't better explained because I absolutely love how these details mirror details from past FF stories. These mortal particles from a meteor are totally a homage to The Spirits Within.

What would be Noctis' motivation to destroy the Astrals?

EhuKB3j.gif

Edit: I can't think of a reason either. Besides, I think power in this sense is gauged by specific functions rather than fighting prowess. I feel like the Astrals needed Noctis to perform a function that they couldn't accomplish. If he tried killing them the endgame would simply be a twenty minute cutscene of your companions wiping Noctis paste off the side of the capitol building.

They really should have integrated cellphones better into the game lore and gameplay wise.

Like noct and fam should have learned about the invasion from, idk a notification or something?

And there really should have been a Hunter app on the phone in which you can just accept and finish quests.

They've been borrowing every western game out there for ff15, yet they seem to forget about how integrated cellphones are for the menus and what not in watchdogsand recent GTAs :P

I remember Nozue or someone saying for Kingsglaive they wanted it to have a culturally agnostic look (like a metropolitan city that could be anywhere) but in the game, Chapter 14 it is decidedly Japanese looking. Lots of Japanese signs (and many, many FF references in them)

Really? I didn't pay attention that much, can you list some

Survive?

Tidus didn't want Yuna to die in FFX and they found a way.

Their world protection is pretty fucked up since it involves sacrificing people.

But killing the Astrals would not assure Noctis' survival. I don't think that the True King's death is a requirement that the Astrals just invented for shits and giggles. I think it just has to be done. The power that the True King taps into is so big that it ends destroying him.

Let's assume that Noctis kills the Astrals after defeating Ardyn. Ardyn would just come back to life, since his soul cannot go to the afterlife.

Noctis died because he had to destroy Ardyn in the afterlife also. The Astrals being alive or not is kind of irrelevant to that.

Also this.

Been saying this too. Would've made the game a much smoother experience if you could do several hunts at once after you talked with the tipster once for example. Or maybe receive the hunts through phone notifications when entering a new area, yeah. I mean, you can already get your rewards at any hunter you like, so it wouldn't be too far-fetched if accepting them isn't locally tied either. Maybe there's a technical reason that I can't think of right now, though? Like, if you're accidentally already standing in the spot where the hunt is while accepting the hunt the monsters would suddenly spawn next to you or in the worst case on you, lol.

Interestingly it was the Japanese fans that complained about Insomnia looking too much like real-life Japan which is why they westernized a it a bit more in Kingsglaive.

It's interesting to hear that Insomnia's westernized design is seemingly actually the result of Japanese fans complaining about the city's similiarity to Tokyo. According to one of the art directors, the goal was to create something that would feel distinct for Western and Japanese audiences.

And see this from '13:

Why Some in Japan Aren't Thrilled with Final Fantasy XV's Setting

The same motivation the FFXIII cast had for destroying their "gods". For "human freedom", "human free will", "We control our destiny now!!" etc.

The difference is that FFXIII's gods were confronting the main protagonist directly, in a very antagonistic role. FFXV's gods, while being jerks, are not in direct opposition of humanity (Except for Ifrit) or the protagonists.

If during the final battle Noctis would've turned to Shiva and Bahamut and said: "Now I'm going to kill you both", I would've been like... Huh...?

I just hope the next FF finally stops using gods as plot devices and almighty masterminds. The series's been doing that since FFXI.

I guess one of the reasons the Chrono series is my favorite RPG series ever is because those games are all about mankind, humanism, and the triumph of free-will. There are no gods in the Chrono universe (aside from the concept of Earth's life having a consciousness).

...free-will and gods are a cornerstone of Final Fantasy. Where the hell have you been?

...free-will and gods are a cornerstone of Final Fantasy. Where the hell have you been?

Free-will was a cornerstone in XI, XIII, XIII-2, XIV, and XV? I'll give you XII, I guess, and LR obviously.

Gods were definitely not a cornerstone of the series before XI. X had a fake god. VI had real gods but they were pretty minor as antagonists.

Hahaha

That's some bullshit blaming concepts like FNC or whatever over the people that execute them like Tabata.

If Tabata directed the XIII series, things like Yeul's deaths would of been off screen and Fang and Vanille's confessions would of been in a loading screen.

It is similarly preposterous if someone didn't know "Barack" and claimed to be a worldly and educated and intelligent person. That's one of the story's major issues for me but whatever. No1curr since the whole thing is a mess.

The Barack example is shit for a number of reasons... But it wouldn't be so out landish if someone introduced themselves as "Harry" and we didn't immediately associate then with Harry Reid. Like Harry Reid he's a high ranking member of their government, but not necessarily as much of a front person. We don't know how common a name like "Ardyn" is in this world, but it's not unbelievable that it could be very common (Barack, however is not).

I forgive prompto not knowing. He's a moron. I don't forgive noctis. I certainly don't forgive ignis.

Yeah, perhaps Barack isn't the best example due to the uncommonness of his name. But I think the point stands in regards to not recognizing the name immediately since we don't know how common Ardyn's name is.

I will state again that even setting that whole thing aside, it seems ridiculous that the whole party (Prompto included) hadn't seen a picture or video of Ardyn. This is a modern world with modern technology, and Ardyn isn't even as low a position as a Harry Reid. He's the chancellor and largely in charge of the Empire:

Nova Crystallis said:
Aldercapt does not actually lead the empire personally at the start of the game. According to Tabata, Aldercapt is “semi-retired from front-line politics.”

It's preposterous to believe no one's seen him up to this point in the news or anywhere else, from Noctis down the line.

With all that being said, when they actually identified him, the party's behavior towards him didn't really change all that much. So even if they knew right from the start he was who he was, I don't think things would've unfolded any differently.

If Tabata directed the XIII series, things like Yeul's deaths would of been off screen and Fang and Vanille's confessions would of been in a loading screen.

The games would also have been a lot more fun to play, and the characters at least would have been interesting, but anyways.

What are the many FF references on the Japanese signs?

That scene where Gladiolus walks off for some reason and comes back with a scar, are there any hints as to what happened? Or is this likely to be explained in his DLC

It's been implied that when Gladio says "you should see the other guy", the other guy is/was
Gilgamesh
(which makes sense, thematically).

It's still completely random as fuck but it'll be more fun to play than the story-supported enemy - the general you knocked out in the mission preceding it who got away.

And it's still completely nonsensical that Gladio just ups and leaves the prince he's sworn his life to bodyguard to go off on a solo mission.

Free-will is a big part of IV, VII, VIII, IX

VII Sephiroth as a god, not to mention the goddess from Crisis Core and the divinity of the ancients
VIII magic is descended from the goddess Hyne, who creates the sorceresses

This post is garbage. Explain yourself. Walk me through each of the 4 boys' character arcs.

How anyone could argue that XIII didn't have more fleshed out character arcs and writing baffles me. People dislike the game for one reason, and suddenly EVERY aspect of the game is garbage to them.

They are...objectively frankly. You can hate them and their personalities till you go blue. But they all have objectively better character arcs...purely for the fact that they have an arc in the first place.

Ding ding ding! Like please, someone tell me, what is Gladios character arc? Getting a scar on his face? Groundbreaking.

I guess one could say the cast of XV is a LOT better than the one in FFI and also FFIII (the original)

Beyond that... yeah.

And that's not even counting the "supporting" cast.

Already posted plenty of posts about why I liked the characters in XV. You guys can search for them. XIII had barely an arc. Characters were almost the same from beginning to end. Anything that seemed like character development was just superfluous. None of the characters ever really bonded or felt like they learned anything about each other of substance. Lightning was the same. Snow was the same. Their dialogue and banter were also unnatural compared to FFXV. Serah had more development in XIII-2 than anyone in XIII.

Ding ding ding! Like please, someone tell me, what is Gladios character arc? Getting a scar on his face? Groundbreaking.

Exactly. Good to see someone else hasn't lost complete memory of what XIII's plot and characters were in the game. Especially in comparison to XV's relatively deficient character stories/focus. Banter and likeability purely do not good characters make. Not for me anyway.

No. XIII's main characters pretty much suck in every way. XV's cast is one of the best in the franchise.
you mean bland main guy, guy who gets mad at main guy for no reason, guy that loses his eyesight off screen and has to yell at guy who gets mad at main guy for no reason to stop being mad at main guy. And Prompto, hes pretty cool.

Then a bunch of irrelevant side characters, and a villain with good potential.

This cast blows

The 4 "bros" are vacuous static characters. With the exception of Ignis' blindness, they do not go through emotional conflict, they do not make important decisions.Nothing.

Quips jokes & banter do not make good characters.

Hardly any of the shit these characters say matters at all.Much like Luna, these characters dont have any strong reasons to be so dedicated to Noctis other than "duty & destiny".

& no I amnot gonna watch brotherhood anime to learn about them.

Sooo, why did Ardyn kill Luna? Still don't get that. Because he wanted Noctis to become angry so he would seek more power to destroy him?

That's how I read it, yeah. She served her purposes for summoning all the Astrals and now killing her is a way to further piss off Noctis and motivate him to achieve his peak potential to take Ardyn down.

There's literally an entire chapter in the late game dedicated to interparty emotional conflict in the whole Marlboro dungeon where Ignis goes blind.

Quip jokes and banter don't make good characters, but they are good for characterization and is something Final Fantasy has been missing for a long time.

Still better then the cast from FFXIII.

Because DLC. That's why Noctis is like "whatever" and no one questions Gladio when he returns. They know about the DLC.

>.>

no bro you just have to watch brotherhood and read the telenovela and buy the strategy guide and listen to the audio drama, their character arcs are all there!!1 PROMPTO WAS FAT FOR GOD'S SAKE

/s

Ignis and prompto have pretty good arcs as does aranea, though.

Aranea: ur pretty fite me
Aranea: jk cya
Aranea: hi pretty boy I'm actually just a mercenary no hard feelings lets do a quick dungeon together
Aranea: I quit the empire because it's falling to shit, good luck with whatever you're doing, k bye

No. XIII's main characters pretty much suck in every way. XV's cast is one of the best in the franchise.

Considering how shafted all of the side cast is, calling the cast "best in the franchise" is pushing it. Ignis and prompto have pretty good arcs (even if prompto's isn't explained enough) as does aranea, though.

I'd say in terms of characterization of its main cast, ff15 is second to ff9 (as much as I absolutely loved the banter in 15, the active time events in 9 worked on another level. I'd LOVE to see them combined though :3)

Ok, makes sense I guess.

Reading up on the lore in the wiki, I don't understand where all the info on there comes from. It sure isn't in the game or in Kingsglaive. Strategy Guide? Made up?

I'm glad some of you are still sane. Like, I get it, the cast of XV is likable. I like Prompto and Noctis, think they're v cute and fun.

Are they well written? No.
Do they have interesting character arcs? No.
Should I have to buy Kingsglaive, watch a YouTube series, read a strategy guide and wait for patches to get the complete picture? No.

The banter is charming, but this cast is very much a collection of four likable anime archetypes that don't receive very much development at all.

Snow and Gladio are essentially from the same cookie cutter anime character family tree, and they managed to give Snow THREE character arcs over the trilogy and each of them was a complete story that showed growth. Even Noctis barely gets that much.

A lot better than the boring ass cast we got in XII and XIII, that's for sure.

Hope gets over his revenge arc and becomes wise by the end of the game. He starts of weak, whiny...and then starts to drop more and more pearls of wisdom to others after his fight with Alexander in Chapter 11.

Vanille stops lying after being honest in Chapter 9 and accepts the guilt for letting Fang turn into ragnarok 500 years in the past sometime in Chapter 11.

Sazh goes through a total identity crisis and wanting to kill himself till Vanille reminds him it's not over. This could've been done better tbh. But it is interesting to see him struggling with his son being a l'cie etc.

Snow has a huge lack of faith after discovering Serah was merely a tool of the fal'cie too in Chapter 9...regains faith near the end thanks to Lightning reminding him of Serah's true wish not what the fal'cie may have made her do. Snow in Chapter 10 is noticeably quiet/not his usual self and the other characters say as much too.

Lightning partially overcomes her guilt for turning away from Serah and her 'lone wolf' desires by mentoring Hope and eventually trying to make him stop his revenge rampage. By the end she accepts her role in a team and doesn't want to run away from the other team members.

Fang...okay lets be honest she doesn't have much of an arc ( much like the XV characters)...but is fun, has great chemistry with the others and purely likeable.

Hey now, Fang's character arc was learning that Cocoon was worth saving! She was determined to destroy it but in the end learned that the word would be a better place if she stopped it from crashing into Pulse. + overcoming her fear of Vanille turning into a c'ieth by refusing to complete her focus.
Light and waves has a better memory of Fang than me...

That was a very fast summary of what I remember...havent played XIII for 3 years. I got all that without reading a single datalog entry for XIII. No it's not the best cast in the world, let alone in all of FF. But it is leagues more interesting than XV as a cast of characters and what the games plot does with them.

XV's does trump it in the pure likeability and chemistry factor (which frankly shouldnt be too hard as they were an established group of friends). And Prompto showing vulnerability is actually ace but the game then leaves that thread.

Subjectivity is cool and all...but please XV's characters do not have arcs like XIII's did.

I get it, you're angry and so am I. Wait until SE patches the long term story stuff coupled with the dlc and maybe we'll have a better picture of who these people are. Hell, I don't have a good picture of who Luna is. I was hoping we can explore her house but she was killed off so early I guess SE rushed the damn thing.

Some stuff is buried in the game (like Starscourge stuff), others come from the guide, others are putting pieces together.

Anything specific you have questions about?
