*Not a huge Star Wars fan thoughts. Haven't read the thread. Just back from watching it.
Positives
- Thought it was second best overall after Empire
- I like that everyone died. So many blockbuster movies these days have no stakes, sure they say the world could end (marvel) but you know the good guys are gonna win and no one good is ever in danger. I haven't seen ANH in a long time but I seem to remember them saying lots of rebels died (may not have actually been said?) getting the Death Star plans, so I was expecting some bloodshed, pleasantly surprised everyone died and they didn't save anyone for future spinoffs or sequels.
- again, great that it wasn't made to be a sequel machine and instead it's a stand alone story and directly leads into the OT
- Darth Vader is cool again
- more personal story, not super compelling but good enough for Star Wars. Characters were mostly good/interesting
-world building - everything feels believable and consistent, far cry from episode 1-3 where the world didn't seem to make any sense, especially in the context of the OT.
- Music was great, even as a non fan of Star Wars, Darth Vaders theme still gives chills. Must be dope for an actual fan.

- Beach fight + space battle was cool

- blind Asian that does kungfu shit. Ok. Can't asians do other things ever?
- other Asian dude that has a rail gun except when he needs to cock it for dramatic effect? Ok
- One of the movies (Jedi?) already did the crash a Star Destroyer into something I think. Remember that from one, expected it again at that final scene when I saw the battle set up and they did it ... couldn't be more creative? That was meh from an overall pretty great fight.
- the whole climbing data tower thing. Felt dumb. Lucky platform. Weird video game vent thing she has to jump through. No danger there just added for ... what? I always gripe about shit like that though I know most people don't care.
My ranking now.

Similar, but the situation was different. In Jedi it wasn't intentional, it was a hit A-Wing that spiraled into the command bridge of the Executor, which then crashed into the Death Star.
I liked that Admiral Raddus noticed that the Y-Wings knocked out the Star Detroyer's power and realized they had a tactical advantage they could use with the Hammerhead plowing itself into it to hit the other active Star Destroyer. It was cool to see actual naval battle tactics used in a Star Wars movie other than just X-Wing and Tie Fighter dog fights.
They wanted a character who could do martial arts, so they hired an actor renowned for martial arts (and who could help appeal to a Chinese audience, no doubt).
Plus Donnie Yen came up with the blindness aspect.
Yea it was cool, the fight overall was good. Just I totally expected it to happen, not necessarily with the push, and then it did happen. Still cool. I enjoyed it a lot.
Doesn't make it not lame or stereotypical, in a blockbuster that mostly avoided stereotypical stuff.

I suppose it's good he had a hand in developing the character, I still don't like it.
I don't think most people that watch movies spend time reading interviews of the actors.
And I am pretty sure most people that watched this movie don't mind his character.

How is this supposed to be a complaint with any weight at all, man. It's like 75% of all bonus features on a blu-ray: It's just there to be a bullet-point so the box looks like there's more in it than there is.
Just saw this tonight, overall pretty disappointing. A lot of the movie felt super forced. Felt like it was trying to be serious but still have some of the camp of the original films, and fell flat on both fronts. Really weird decision to use super obvious cgi faces instead of a different person. No chemistry at all between the two main characters. I guess it was nice to see several more places in the starwars universe. The opening scene was really good, it's just a shame that didn't continue throughout the rest of the film.
Not backing off at all, I didn't like it. I still don't like it knowing more about it. I didn't say anything about the other guy except I thought the rest of the characters were pretty good and weren't really stereotyped, that applies to the other Asian dude.
That was one of the few negatives I had with the movie if you see my initial post, no need to focus on it from everyone. If others liked it that's fine. Movie was really good.

It grew on me on my second viewing. Love it now.
Yeah I really like it now. I noticed that even if Giacchino doesn't go straight to Williams themes or leitmotifs, his instrumentation is still consistently calling back to Williams throughout the score, things like the lilting flutes that are throughout the OT scores, it's in the quieter moments that it excels at being a substitute. And he didn't overuse the classic themes, but he does use them at the right times, like the Death Star cue from A New Hope when we first see it gave me chills, and he held off on using the Imperial March until the first time we see Vader so it's particularly effective.

Just saw it. Thought it was pretty fantastic. A bit slow in the beginning but I really felt for Jyn and cared about her. Strong ending. Loved the music. cinematography was gorgeous.
The moments between Cassian and Gyn from when they shoot the dude on the antenna, down through the elevator as they stare at each other knowing their impending doom, ending with the hug on the beach really struck me.

I did appreciate the use of the ANH Imperial stinger as the laser dish was installed. Giacchino's Imperial theme does remind me a little of Rogue Squadron 1's title music. Not intentional, since there are a finite amount of ways to create a marshal theme (be it heroic or villainous) in the Williams style.

That's the Death Star Motif (it shows up one more time), the Imperial Motif shows up the first time we actually see Vader, and plays two more times during the "Krennic's Aspirations" track on the soundtrack.

I stand corrected. I was conflating the two due to the stinger used during Vader's first appearance (in ANH).
Even if this isn't my list it's nice to see Jedi getting some love.
He, the robot and the villain were the best characters in the film.

It had a lot of faults, but really the only flaw it would need to be better at for me to rank it higher than those 2 is to have Jyn be a better character. Or "better" in my opinion. She made it hard for me to care what was going on unfortunately. I don't think Phantom Menace or Revenge were miles better by any means. I just think to myself "Which would I rather re-watch?" And right now, Rogue One is near the bottom. And when I think to myself why....it feels like it is my lack of engagement with what is happening on-screen while she is there.
I don't know why Rogue One fell so flat for me...I see eye-to-eye with my best friend on just about everything in life, movies included....and he came back loving the hell out of Rogue One. Something just didn't click with me. Maybe I do need to try it one more time.
The prequels were just so wizard tho /s
How big a fan are you of the Expanded Universe? I've noticed that people who generally only like the movies didn't care for Rogue One, but people that have been really into the Expanded Universe material of novels, comic books and video games dug the hell out of it because the focus is on the world building and military action that takes precedence over the Skywalker storyline that the movies follow specifically.

Honestly, not a fan at all of the EU. But I think I might grab another viewing of this over the weekend or early next week to see if I can nail down why things didn't resonate with me. I have a goo idea now, but I want to try it one more time.

Nah, Hossin Prime or w/e it's called was destroyed in TFA. Coruscant still lives.
Tatooine and Coruscant are still intact from what we know so far. They specifically moved the New Republic to a different planet in the timeline of Force Awakens so Coruscant wouldn't be blown up lol.

2. ESB: "I am your father" will haunt the minds of every person who went in blind to that.

4/5.ROTS: Obi-Wan vs Anakin and the great fall of the Jedi
4/5.RO: Jyn and her team's sacrifice is the ignition to the franchise
