Voice chat on the Switch will consist of a paid app on "smart" devices (your phone)

If really true this is amazing and Nintendo out-Nintendoed themselves.

What is the point of this over, say, Skype then? It is basically just a chat with friends via your phone with the difference that you (presumably) use your Nintendo account (and have to fucking pay for it).

of course they do. where do you think they got the brilliant idea to charge for online? they even saw that they had to "give" some "free" games in exchange, and very reluctantly seem to agreed to do so.

Except they're coming off of the Wii U, which bombed really really hard. They're in no position to be doing this. The kinds of mistakes they're making we usually see companies make coming off of huge successes like Sony made after the PS2 and Microsoft made after the 360. Usually when a console disappoints, companies try to get their shit together. But Nintendo leadership seem to not understand this

right now the only hope we have is

- switch allows wired headsets

- switch also supoorts wireless bluetooth headset

as it is now we dont even have any idea if the system supports voice input natively at all

What would be the point if that if every Switch could do it natively? Can at least one person who is in complete denial of this feature please explain that to me? Why would they go to the trouble of developing a phone app that does something the Switch could already do?

i dunno, maybe so people can join when they're not playing just to chat with their buds?

Im not saying it makes sense or it's a revolutionary move, im saying it's what it sounded to me, like the app allows you to use your account to communicate via your smart device, as an option.

So this is really real?

Like not a joke or a mistranslation or something else?

Because my God. Nintendo really is something else.

Yup it's fucking real alright. Like this console so far when they revealed it back in October fucking had me. It sold me, then I watched the live stream, and it was a dumpster fire.

Then I heard this stuff about voice chat being part of an app, and I said no way, there's just no way they would be this fucking clueless and ignorant.

But they are, knowing how stubborn they are as a company they wont change a fucking thing.

Am I the only one who feels this will be a cluster fuck at retail when it launches? Like I feel any non-hardcore nintendo fans that buy this thing will have so many questions.

How do you fucking explain to your kid that mom/dad will let you borrow their phone to talk to your friend or family while playing?

Like huh?

Reminds me of when Splatoon released without voicechat and people were justifying that too, just 100x worse since this seems to be at a console level.

I think they would have mentioned that it's free for subscribers if it was. The only thing I saw was "free version of the app with limited functionality"

This is such a mess.

Thanks.

The worst of it all is that they're baiting people with that free period till fall. I imagine loads of people will be the system without knowing that online won't be free afterwards.

Glad I can pay for an online service that includes an app for my phone so I can... talk to my friends on my phone...

<______<;;;; I've been a staunch defender of Nintendo and all their antics for a long while but this is just dumb.

But your example is why this isn't forward thinking. There are already a multitude of solutions of this type that are completely free. It's not forward thinking, it's completely ass backwards.

Yes, but what I mean is that they should work on decoupling the voice chat experience away from the console. I don't want to buy a console headset. I would rather use the bluetooth headset I already got for my phone.

There is a multitude of advantages to offering voice through your smart device. Watch Microsoft and Sony follow eventually.

Okay so I've been skeptical about this from the once it was announced. Something about this doesn't add up because you can preorder a 3rd party headset at Gamestop.

Does that plug into your phone?!

Edit: I'm going to have to look this up. I distinctly remember the guy on line in front of me being asked by an employee if he wanted to preorder any accessories and mentioning a headset. To which the guy put money down for.

"fortunately there's a product for all you nintendo fans who want voice chat, it's called a phone"

Yes, but what I mean is that they should work on decoupling the voice chat experience away from the console.
Why?

PS3 & PS4 are able to do that and STILL have voice chat through the console. (though you need a dongle)

I would die if it was audio only with a mute and volume button. Given the news today, I could believe it.

That Splatoon page info really makes it seem like all voice chat will be handled by an app on your phone.

Why would they do this =/

Yeahhhhhh bummed they're yet AGAIN not going to have their online figured out right out of the gate

What's so hard about this Nintendo, copy literally ANYONE else

the App probably syncs your phone and your Switch and offloads the work to run the chat and party mechanics to the phone instead of the Switch OS I guess? It's Nintendo bringing an unnecessary middle man into the process.

List them right now.

So seeing that this is still around, this is fucking for real? Voice chat through a goddamned smartphone app?

Voice chat like the voice chat that was happening in 2004 with Halo 2 on the original Xbox?

This is THE most unfathomable news from the whole event... how the hell is this even possible in 2017?

How they can't have voice chat in the damn console software is beyond me being we have had voice chat on consoles for almost 2 decades. Its kinda pathetic they think people want a smart phone app for that. Like yes Nintendo people love their smart phones, but damn thats less convenient then just doing on the system itself. Ill just use discord to chat if it requires a phone.

My main question is, why aren't more outlets jumping on this? Is it something we're not getting or are they turning a blind eye?

While this is crazy from a console perspective, I guess it makes some sense if you consider the system to be a portable without cellular service.

Allowing you to use any old BT headset on a console is not something that requires this cell phone middle man method, it would just require the console manufacturers allowing for widespread BT headset support, which I don't believe they currently do. That's not an advantage that is inherent to decoupling. Hell considering Gamestop is apparently selling Switch headsets, it might not even be an advantage in this case.

You probably wouldn't want to voice chat with your friends if your console isn't even connected to the net to play online, I think

I guess cause it's so crazy they are not really sure!

Why?

What are the advantages?

I can take my voice chat experience outside of the game. I don't need to turn on my games to chat with my game friends.

Imagine an always online lobby room for Mario Kart in which players gather and coordinate games for the evening. You can access it at any time from your phone app.

Right now that goes on with Discord. People coordinate their games on the Discord lobby during the morning while they are away from their consoles/PC and schedule times to game during the evening. They don't use Xbox/PS4 to chat at any moment, they chat in Discord during the game session. In fact, the big disconnect is that Discord doesn't have direct integration with PSN/XBL so to set up a game they have to share user ids, and go through all that game setup shit.

Imagine if the smart device app is actually aware of Nintendo's game network and allows you to set up the game and invite your friends from the phone app. Its the direction in which I know XBL is moving towards with Smartglass allowing you to message friends from the app. The problem is that SmartGlass is laggy as fuck. I'd rather use Discord for messaging and voice all the way and just deal with the XBL/PSN friend system to set up the game. I hope Nintendo can pull it off.

Have you used Discord? There are hundreds of voice lobbyes online 24/7 in which gaming discussion goes on. Not games industry discussion like here on GAF, but people actually talking about how to get past certain levels and shit. There are like 340 people right now on the Halo channel coordinating games. These people don't give a fuck about Xbox Live communication. Discord supersedes it.

Don't Sony allow random Bluetooth headsets to work? The PS3 did. PS4 I know they included the shitty, but still appreciated, "headset" in the box. So I guess PS4 BT headset support might be stricter? I don't see why though. If the unit supports BT it should support any headset.

Wait, is there a separate fee for this? It's ass backwards either way, but god damn.

Yes you need to pay for it.
