Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

Interesting note from this is that it confirms
a single ending which goes against the 4chan leak

Other things were wrong about the leak, for example
it was confirmed that there would be no flying mounts and the weapons claimed I think missed the rapid fire bow which we've seen

More like the animations and visuals, which are absolutely gorgeous.

The climbing and running animations in this game look very similar to Assassin's creed. Do we know if the mechanics are the same? It looks like auto platforming to me with conveniently placed platforms for players to hold L2 on to.

The game looks visually amazing though.

For somebody who is sick of Ubisoft games, I don't see anything appealing in this game. Maybe I am wrong and it will be much deeper than it appears, but from what I have seen, this game just isn't at all appealing. Doesn't it even have towers to unlock the map?

You have proof of that? If that's the entire map then this game is smaller than Shadow of Mordor and I don't think that's the case. Go back to vids of her activating the tallneck and you'll see what I'm talking about. As the story progresses, I think the black areas will open up.

Smaller than Shadow of Mordor? What? How on earth are you getting that impression? Shadow of Mordor's open maps are relatively tiny. Hardly any reviews of that game describe the world as being big, whereas almost every Horizon preview says the world is huge.

Honestly, one small portion of Horizon looks as big or bigger than each of the two maps of Shadow of Mordor.

You jump with X. You already know what the game is about, it seems like its not for you. It's an RPG.

So more like Tomb Raider than Assassin's creed?

One thing that does interest me is the talk of dungeons. I expect them to be like the ones from AC2. I used to love those dungeons and they are my favourite part of the whole AC series.

He already thrown the Towel , you are pretty late on this.

I mean, he has conceded that the map we've seen is the full one, but he hasn't expanded on his assertion that it's smaller than Shadow of Mordor, has he? That's what my whole post was about.

Oh, I got it, no worry. we are just discussing this on previous page. But if he read the directors tweet he also added that the map is huge , in the same tweet string, so i thought he also conceded on the size of the map.

From what I played yea it has the fluidity of TR. They could have changed it since I played it at the PSX event.

They game has dungeons ala Zelda from the looks of it, filled with enemies, platforming, puzzles, rare items and boss fights at the end.

You're in luck, it's not a Ubisoft game.

What appeals to you in an open world RPG?

Doesn't it even have towers to unlock the map?

No. You can unlock the map by simply exploring the world of Horizon or you can climb and override the Tall Necks to get a reading of Aloy's surrounding.

Considering how shit ass shitty climbing and platforming gameplay is in most open world games I'll take autoplatforming. It looks fluid enough which is a big for me and combined with everything else they seem to be pulling off it impressive it looks as good as it does.

I can't help but be skeptical despite being blown away by every single thing I have seen in the last two years.

A studio who made some good not great FPS games, is suddenly going to take on this genre and knock it out of the park first try?

Usually games this big aren't exclusives. Something like Mass Effect, Witcher, Bethesda games, etc. that just scream 'huge budget'. This looks the same, but how can it be? Sony gave this team, this new ip, this genre, that kind of budget?

The game looks fucking incredible, but I am just having a really hard time believing that Guerilla Games in their first foray into open world is going to create the best looking console game ever, with well above average WRPG combat mechanics. With absolutely incredible enemy design, deep RPG/crafting/collecting systems. and a story that at the very least has me curious, and looks to be above the standard open world RPG story, Oh by the way it also had slick as fuck movements and a platforming mechanic.

How can that be true? It simply does not compute. It took the Witcher team 3 tries to finally strike pure gold. And the combat was still a weak point, and it even took some time to just get used to the awkward movement mechanics.

I'm buying this day zero and a PS Pro is on the way just for this game. But there is something wrong with this game, there has to be.
I don't think they were/are going to nail everything. But GG knew their weaknesses and added a lot of experienced vets to the team. So what I expect is, the graphics, combat, lore, things GG have been consistently good at, were already top notch in Horizon. They got help for Story, voice-acting, quest, presentation etc...

I think all parts of the game will at worse be average, and many of them will be best in class. That makes for a fine game.

Looks like a massive world.

But if it does turn out smaller then most think, I don't think that's bad either. I just feel like smaller open worlds = a tad more detailed, and filled.

I'm just gonna walk the earth hunting Thunderjaws after I finish the game. Should be OP enough by that point.

Maybe some Tallneck tourism too - quite like the idea of just observing the world from up on high.

I hope the rumour about an arena mode as DLC is true tho.

I think if this is successful there are a lot of places they can take the universe. PvP Tribal conflict, cooperative and/or competitive robo hunts...good raid potential too...

Game looks amazing, can't wait to play it later this month.

One of the best looking open world games. I really hope the enviornments hold up as you get into the game with lots of variety.

My only nitpick is her hair, it just doesn't look like hair to me, rather it looks like a piece of cloth instead, the way it moves all "together" like it's one big glob of hair instead of individuals.

They could have learned a thing or two from Tomb Raider in that area.

I think this is key. When they were staffing up for this game they hired a lot of the right people to expand their capabilities.

Bingo.

When I conceded, I conceded to everything

Yes I did respond to the director and agreed that the game is indeed huge. I just remembered Mordor being bigger than I thought lol

I dont know about jumping and platforming stuff, but climbing felt a lot like Uncharted 4 climbing when I played a build last year

Which is fine for the type of game this is

Is there any reason other than graphics people would anticipate this game? I've yet to see Guerilla release a game better than above average.
Combat is supposed to be really satisfying, and the world very varied and well-designed
Good AI and varied behaviors for the machines
Top-notch graphics, animations, etc.
An interesting story

You're making "above average" sound like "below average" I think KillZone 2 is a well above average game, it is a very good game with great A.I.

This meme of Guerilla doesn't make good games has gotten traction, which is a shame.

Killzone 2 was pretty darn good. So was Killzone Liberation.
Aside from the great combat I've seen enough videos to think that the story is actually very interesting.
I know first impressions are everything and a lot of us saw THAT cutscene first but the other npc interactions are really good.
There's also the fact that it's being praised pretty much universally by everyone that got to try it at the event.

What is Dishonored?

Female protagonist for $1000, Alex.

Edit: Oh wait first party, but Tomb Raider is not first party either.

I love Dishonored but I'm not considering it because they give you the choice of gender. Horizon is Aloy or no play game.

Dishonored has a female protagonist. But she feels like a skin more than an actual character. I personally wouldn't put her in the same category as a character like Lara.

Way to bring the mood down buddy...lol but yeah you're right, this could be the best thing ever or be average.

Personally, like a game such as Watch Dogs 2, I appreciate here that the platforming opens up avenues of exploration outside of what is found in most open-world games, which is generally exploration confined to the ground level.

I really appreciate how health and damage numbers are multiplied by 10 or 100. Having single and double numbers of damage being done seem so clean and nice.
