Microsoft Studios (& Partners) Current and Future Landscape

Let's forget about exclusives, how about attracting Japanese ports of games that are just skipping Xbox One.

Final Fantasy X and XII remakes
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 & 2.5
Kingdom Hearts 2.8
NieR: Automata
Persona 5
Yakuza
Ni no Kuni
Dragon Quest Heroes
Tales of Berseria
Zero Escape
Shenmue 3? (idk it's coming to PC)
Nioh? (Sony picked up publishing rights for this in some territories but there's no PS4 only label so idk)

There's probably others but I feel like a handful of these games would find some success on Xbox One. Xbox gamers are generally uninterested in Japanese games but the some of the ones listed here have some kind of universal appeal especially Kingdom Hearts considering the third one is coming to Xbox One for crying out loud.

The vast, vast majority of Xbox fans see this as a whole lot of anime garbage. So until that perception changes it's not gonna happen.

So I pulled this from an MS survey. They were asking about whether or not I liked these characters and if I wanted to play as or against them. Also, when combining the images, there is another image in the background. Could be new IP or reboot of an old IP. Who knows?

Area bosses in Crackdown 3 is all I could think of.

Nioh would have been fine tho. Its Dark Souls like. Wich is pretty popular on Xbox also.
Couple of more would work but will not sell alot. But doubt they do on PS4 also.

Any significance in there being seven characters?

And they look way to clean for a zombie apocalypse so I don't think its SoD2, also its a MP game or mode as well?

Curiouser and curiouser.....

The numbers i've heard floated on how much MS lost on cancelling Scalebound means they got funding cut, if anything.

Which is exactly why I specified it being one of several reasons, and I've also gone on to say probably not even a major one in the big picture, a silver lining if you will.

There is no way they had funding to move around onto a new project.

Project was likely underway in some form. I highly doubt any project coming out of that leak, if its true, started anytime recently.

And MS is not interested in new IP, particularly new IP that has an SP-focus to it.

Lost Planet is not a new IP, its one with a previous Xbox history, and the series (especially 2) has a rich history with cooperative gameplay and multiplayer.

Anything they fund will be in house, and will be something they own.

Dead Rising 3 & 4 beg to differ. Regardless, until E3 comes round to back it up, that statement is just as much as a theory as mine.

Now again, its just some playful 10 minute guesswork, its not meant to be anything serious, just a conversation starter.

Edit: And as recently announced, it seems Capcom Vancouver is working on a different project that leaked, so there goes a lot of my theory out the window anyway. I cant see a JP based Capcom studio working on project like that and also doing the DR3 & 4 situation with MS, I figured Capcom Vancouver's previous history with MS would be a driving force in the projects creation.

It could be for Crackdown online. If they are going after the GTA online experience, Crackdown online would be a stylized sandbox Ex you can play as either agents or the bad guys in Crackdown online

I'm pretty sure the first character is Joanna Dark, even the pants are the same :O

I don't wanna play as any of these douche bags! Looks a lot like GTA Online characters. No idea what this could be for.

Do you really want alll the Kingdom Hearts games on X1? I don't even undertand their numeration, I never heard before of a game called 1.5, 2.8, 365/2. The best would be having a movie to resume the important parts of the previous games.

Those three (really two because 1.5 & 2.5 are bundle on PS4) are basically the entirety of KH. The Disney image alone would probably help sell them and help to get xbox fans on board for KH 3. And haven't we learned anything for FF XV when it comes to making a movie to explain vital points of the story and expecting players to watch!

The vast, vast majority of Xbox fans see this as a whole lot of anime garbage. So until that perception changes it's not gonna happen.

The only way that perception changes is if those games are given a chance on the platform to begin with. I mean Naruto and Dragon Ball and other Shonen games still sell well for the most part. It's more of a bad look for MS to be missing titles. As mentioned before, MS is uninterested in making any kind of SP game so they need all the help they can get.

IDK if its significant but the fact that they are asking about seven specifically makes me feel like this isn't for an online game. Or at least not an online focused on since I'd expect an avatar creator instead seven set models.

The play as or fight against is the really interesting part. Maybe a game where you have the potential to recruit enemies. Or is it that the devs have created the characters and want an idea of which group will be the protagonists and which will be the villains? Either way, looking forward to knowing more about the game.

It could be that there IS a character editor and they're just testing out examples for marketing purposes.

It's definitely online focused as the survey wouldn't have asked about participating in a beta or alpha, IMO.

Just searched for Crackdown 3 Bosses and this popped up.

The Crackdown 3 single-player campaign is a city-wide war on crime

For whatever reason, your employers at the Agency are perfectly content to send you into a crime-filled city all by your lonesome, turning you into a police force of one against an underworld of thousands. There's no word yet on whether or not Crackdown 3 takes place in the series mainstay of Pacific City, but wherever you end up fighting an army of felons, you'll have to factor in a new, frankly named mechanic: the Hate System.

Your primary targets are the many Crime Lords who are orchestrating all the misdemeanors going down at street-level, but you can't simply kick down a door and shoot them dead. They'll only show themselves once you've gotten their attention after building up a Hate Meter by systematically eliminating their network of hired goons and reclaiming their territory for the side of the law. All the while, those Crime Lords will be taunting and/or threatening you via giant holograms throughout the city, a la Batman: Arkham Knight. Accrue enough of their Hate, and they'll personally try to take you down in all-or-nothing boss fights.

Seven crime lords? Its good to speculate :)

I do see a resemblance, but that just makes the other characters confuse me even more as to what this could be.

MS PLEASE MAKE ANOTHER PD REGARDLESS

If you look closely, even the lines on the pants are the same...

Now, this could be a potential hint of a Perfect Dark reboot or Joanna Dark is a enemy boss in Crackdown 3, and Microsoft really like to troll Rare fans.

I'm sure it's the second option :P

Yeah. Those pant lines definitely match up. I guess Perfect Dark could be happening.

Will Japanese games never be popular because perception or do they try to break through?

How can perception change if no-one tries. Japanese games aren't advertised to 'dude bros', because 'they just don't get it'. How can anyone else besides fans of those games like it or 'get it', they are made for their fans, advertised for their fans, put on the platform where their fans are and then people expect perception to change. Clearly they happy with that audience and that's it.

I get why this happens, but it will remain as it is, because it's a cycle. Dark Souls sells well on Xbox or well enough and that has a very Japanese feel to it. So Japanese that Sony never even had faith in Demon Souls outside Japan. Yet Ni Oh is exclusive, why is that? 'Too Japanese'?

I'm not gonna hype myself up if it is really a PD character, but who knows that most likely might be for Crackdown.

What do we know about Decisive Games besides that one GAF post?
Were they conceived to make Halo Wars 2 before moving it to Creative Assembly?

They were supposedly conceived to create strategy games, likely Age of empires 4. I think creative assembly was already signed up before decisive games was known to us. We also have no official confirmation of their existence or if they have been closed or not. It sounded like it was a internal Microsoft studios team similar to project spark team.

Interesting interview with Phil at 15:17 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTXiKSUvdc0
Summary
Project scorpio jacket. (Xbox is in fashion this winter.)
He is bad at RTS.
Goes over the importance of XPA. (Notes people who play on both systems play the most.)
Plays fallout shelter in meetings which he notes are in fact boring.
Asked how in important PC gaming is to Xbox (response recognises issues.)
Quote "windows is incredibly important to Microsoft... DUHH."
Xbox team now runs gaming as a whole for Microsoft.
Will talk more about their commitment to PC in the future.
There will be PC exclusives, there will be console exclusives.(Age of Empires 4?)
Microsoft as a whole, Satya all the way down believes gaming is very important to Microsoft.
(XPA opinion) Says he is old fashioned (mind the grey hair jokes Gaf) believes the sharded (I don't think thats a word) nature of eco-systems is bad for the industry and developers. Believes giving developers a large spanning platform is best for their success.
He notes they still have a long way to go.
Weirdly he brings up that they have shipped games on other consoles (Minecraft, Nintendo handhelds) says that it allows people on other consoles to play those games, and he believes they should get to play those games. Reiterates it's about games first and giving the best opportunity to be successful .
When asked what games he's looking forward to this year (context E3) he replies "Some of them we haven't announced yet."
Reiterates what everyone want's in saying that he wants to play below.
Believes they have a really strong lineup this year, notes that they don't have Halo FPS this year or Gears. Says it will be a interesting year with no mega-block buster franchises, believes this will allow for SOT, SD2,CD3 and other unannounced games to be successful. Likes the challenge of not releasing the traditional games they ship.
Says Crackdown is his most anticipated game of this year. (Crackdown is one of his all time favourite games)
Phil and Larry go on about Voodoo Vince yadh...yadh.. yadh (I know some of you love it)
Phil says you need that Surface with that performance base (performance base sounds like a euphemism, I don't know why?)

I don't know why this interview was tucked away in this live event, because it seemed like it was deliberately done to address a lot of the feedback and unrest Xbox has got the last two months. Also I think Phil and definitely Bonnie were a bit tipsy (ok Bonnie looked like she had a bit much 1:32:52 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTXiKSUvdc0 )

Halo 6 PS4 confirmed

Curious what possible unannounced games he's referring to. Was his answer about games appearing just at E3 or games appearing at E3 that will hit 2017?

What I suspect are "announced E3, same year release " for MS this year:

- Ori2
- Forza7 (duh)
- unannounced HD port of Xbox game in the same vein as PD

He talks about this years lineup.

@Nightengale I agree with your guesses of Ori, Forza and a original Xbox game, but if the rumours are wrong that decisive is all but gone I could see Age of Empires or Rise of Nations this year as a PC exclusive.

The unannounced games would likely be smaller stuff. In the way of a Recore or Ori. Those kinda games can be made by a smaller no named studio and would be a fairly small investment or like make an ID@xbox type game, exclusive

I also wonder if they are doing any VR games. Like Zoo Tycoon or screamride would be cool if they were transitioned into a VR game

Ori 2 will probably hit in Q1 2018 if it gets announced. But a Forza, a budget game and a port sounds about right and in line with their previous two E3s. They'll probably throw a couple of exclusive indie games there as well. I don't think they they'll announce anything else for 2018 and beyond other than Halo 6 (it's a dumb idea, but they will tease it).

They did the same thing with Halo 5 and Gears 4. Why do you think it is dumb?

So you think they are going to reduce their output of games next year to three games Ori, Halo and Forza. Even tho Phil made out that the fact they are shipping more games this year than last year as a positive. I don't see them decreasing output with the last two years being a average of 5 major exclusives the same number as this year so far. Some people in this thread thinking they will only have Halo 6 and Forza Horizon 4 in 2018 are doom mongering.

I'm sure Microsoft has a couple of significant games planned for 2018 aside from the obvious (Halo 6, Forza). The only real questions are what are they and who are they working with. Since Ruffian seems to be working on an Xbox One game, I'd expect to see that at E3 for 2018. Since they haven't released at game in about 5 years now, it wouldn't be unreasonable to think they have something pretty far along.

I also can't shake the feeling that Microsoft may be teaming up with Digital Extremes (Warframe). Other than supporting Warframe, their last released game was Sword Coast Legends in 2015, which didn't seem to be a huge project. If you go to their website they're hiring a LOT of people right now which would indicate that ramping up of a project. Their history of shooters and success in the games as a service space would fit in with the current trajectory for Xbox. Obviously this is all just speculation on my part.

I think whats most interesting about it is those games would have to be old ip's being revived or new ip's. (I do expect one of the 2018 games to be KI4 tho)

Halo 6 is going to be the biggest hype generating exclusive game announcement they'll have at their conference.

a new halo 6 announcement is gonna be as exciting as a new madden/NBA/Call of duty..

i'm sure the game is gonna be good and all and it will sell in the millions but it's so predictable that i will be surprised that it will not be announced....together with a Forza.

and next year's E3 MS is gonna announce Gears 5....and one of another Forza..

again, i am not commenting about these games' quality or popularity among the Xbox only crowd. Just commenting the predictability of its announcements.

You don't think people get excited about the gameplay changes, new story details or graphics. Even tho call of duty is annual if it announced a WW2 call of duty that would probably be one of the biggest announcements at E3 due to it's popularity.

I dont know what Spencer's claim of shipping more games in 2017 than 2016 has to do with their 2018 output. They can go into 2018 with Halo, Ori, Sea of Thieves (anyone who thinks it releases this year is lying to themselves) and a few indies. It's not much less than what they have for 2017 right now. In both of those years they can announce a couple more "released on the same year" games at E3, like they usually do with Forza

I'd love to be wrong, but Microsoft has spent the last two years giving out all sorts of hints that they are cutting back on funding exclusive games. I think they realized that exclusives don't move consoles like multiplats do, and that's why they're keen on having the most powerful console with Scorpio.

seriously, the story of masterchief and the 'lore' of the halo universe has been stretch beyond its logical limits.........

like that eurogamer article mentioned, the problem with halo is the halo fans itself...their refusal to let go of master chief, a 'charmless' protagonist that has exhausted all the options he was created to perform at the end of halo 3. The frakkin Doom guy (Doom slayer) in Doom 2016 has more charm and character than Master Chief at this point. Even the covenant seems tired in Halo 5....being dragged into a fight that's not theirs in the first place.

Again, just my 2 cents. Feel free to fire away, halo fans!

They release 5 "major exclusives" per year??

2017
Halo Wars 2
Forza
Crackdown
State of Decay
Sea of Theives
???????

2016
Quantum break
Forza Horizon 3
Recore
Gears of war 4
Dead rising 4

2015
Ori
Forza Motorsport 6
Halo 5
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Gears UE+Rare replay+State of decay:YOSE

Even 2014 was quite good
Project spark
Sunset Overdrive
Master Chief Collection
Titanfall
D4

I guess it depends on how you interpret major releases, for me sales, hype, marketing, positioning and franchise. If a title falls into one of those I consider it major. Hence why something like a gigantic wouldn't be there.

To me that article was smearing halo wars 2 without ever hammering home any of his points. Then proceeds to go on about 343 not being bungie. While bungie fans are more excited for halo wars 2 than anything since halo 3. Some good points are made but the majority of it is, make one point then proceed to rant of point. With a fair amount of ignorance of Halo in the article especially in terms oh Halo wars 1. Also I think it comes down to how much interest do you have in Halo lore or universe. I disagree about Master Chief tho he is a shell for the player, he doesn't effect were the story can go.
