17-minute-long IGN look at Mass Effect Andromeda (Peebee Loyalty Mission SPOILERS)

The more I see the more I temper my expectations. I really do hope it's just a case of the game being shown in a poor light.

Who in their right mind would play BioWare games for the quality writing?

uh... clipping and collision detection probably makes a simple punch like that infinitely more difficult to animate than any punch in a TV or film

Not in a cutscene. I mean, even if it was a fake punch on mocap day, you can just correct it in animation. I don't claim to know everything (or anything) about how BioWare works internally, but surely it can be fixed.

For those afraid of spoilers - I think this is some early mission and the game is holding player's hand anyway, so I wouldn't say it is very spoilery. You won't be able to discover anything by yourself anyway because it constantly screams scan this or that, and there are like 3 enemy encounters. I don't like spoilers and I didn't have any problem watching this.

I think it is safe to watch it, unless you are very sensitive in this respect.

k but it's a videogame so there's literally no excuse for the first to not hit in this context. "It looks fine" is just saying "the game is shit but only if you actually pay attention".

This game is going to have much bigger problems than the lack of contact on a punch that you can only notice if it's put into slow motion. It doesn't need to be "excused" because it doesn't matter, it's completely irrelevant.

Yeah, just a matter of if it's worth it to expend the resources, I imagine.

it's not looking too good that there's clipping between side-weapon and the right hand when Ryder is idle

Its a really bulky weapon for that slot. I guess its a consequence of the new flexibility in not being limited to one weapon per type - it'd be fine with a pistol.

Not early mission, you can even do this after main story is done. They are holding your hand because in this mission they are changing rules on what scan can and can't do.

The punch not connecting is probably a consequence of it being animated for a male character? But it looks fine at actual speed anyway.

I admit that I am a huge fan of the franchise. I wholeheartedly dislike (to say it nicely) complains about meaningless details like slightly subpar animations, split second facial expressions or 30 fps cut scenes.

I enjoyed Mass Effect for characters like Garrus, Mordin, The Illusive Man, Joker, Liara, places like the Citadel, Omega, the Collector's Base, plot lines like Geth vs. Quarians, the genophage, and player decisions like whether to save the Council, the Geth or the Quarians, the Rachni Queen.

If Mass Effect Andromeda delivers characters, places, plot lines and player choices like Mass Effect 1-3 I will be very pleased with this 4th instalment of the series. But I have to say they have not demonstrated that yet, though it certainly is hard to do in trailers.

I wish they had somehow build up an interesting antagonist or an exciting premise. But until now it all seems a bit bland.

Does anybody remember the Mass Effect 2 preview where we see Nassana Dantius? The dialogue was on point, we got to see a good first impression on new squadmates, and the gameplay improvements were apparent. Then the reveal of Thane assassinating Dantius right in front of us? It was mind-blowing.

This... isn't that. Banter was/is my favorite part of the ME triology. In this video I just can't wait for them to shut up :(
Yeah. I hate to jump on the negativity train here, but despite an expectation that I would like parts of this video more than the rest of this thread, nah. This was an awful gameplay segment to demo, I don't feel like the presenter did a good job of demoing the game and the banter is really not good.

I think the best us naysayers can hope for is that the people making this game are just terrible at showing it off and they really made something fun and engaging, but I'm definitely waiting for week 2 impressions before I even consider a purchase.

i probably have really badly understood the combat trailer.
Wasn't question to give more mobility with jetpack ?
why did this guy play like it's gears of war then ?
Because this is what happens when he tries to use it:

That ability doesn't look like it belongs in this game. It will only make the game's world feel more restrictive if level geometry is going to keep preventing the player from using the jump button to... jump... on things.

That video somewhat deflated my hype, I have to say. Still looking forward to it but that wasn't the best slice to show, doesn't help that the IGN guy sucked ass and just kind of stood there in combat though.

I like Sara. She seems sorta spunky and optimistic. Though this is coming from someone who only ever played 1-3 as John.

Weirdly, I had a Mass Effect vibe from the gameplay, despite the abilities and potential speed being more in line with Mass Effect 3, though that's probably due to the slow and methodical nature of who's playing.

I don't get the negativity, but then I was always going to be there day one. Looks like more Bioware and more Mass Effect, which is exactly what I want. Can't wait for release, and nothing has tempered that hype so far. Maybe I have lower standards.

Combat looks better than all other ME games (even though i do like some of the wonki gun aiming stuff of the original).

Everything else somehow manages to look really really poor.

Even some technical things are rather confusing. We know character art shading in frostbite is really high quality. Why are the eyes and skin so poorly shaded here?

You could just tell that character was going to be an annoying twat when they called it "Peebee".

Let's hope none of the others are this verbose.

People analysing and bashing the game almost frame by frame makes this game look like its dead on arrival.

I've never felt so uncomfortable browsing gaf as reading through Mass Effect threads.

Just imagine the treatment the sex scenes will get.

Please tell me you can change body types,Ryder looks like a malnourished 14 yr old here.

The game still feels off to me,part of it is the frostbite engine,I personally dont think its good fit for anything other than fps games and environments. The characters and combat feels stiff and the various skills lack punch, the UI reminds me of MMO designs (not unlike DA:I did).
I still hope the game's gonna be decent though, even if ME3 ending kinda destroyed my love for the franchise,it'd be nice to go back to this universe after 5 years.

I think the aiming still looks wonky and stiff like old Mass Effect. The more I watch it the less improved it seems. The character movement looks less clunky though but as posted above, it doesn't seem like the environments are built with the extra mechanics in mind, it's a cool afterthought that doesn't blend.

Not sure if I should watch... the release date is so close...

Also, can't wait to play this in glorious 3440x1440

Yea kinda already preemptively feeling bad for the team. Game is going to be absolutely ripped to shreds no matter what. The user score on Metacritic is going to be like a 2 even if the game comes out good. Really hoping it can still sell well with all this negativity going around.

I'm hoping they can at least please the MP crowd and have a decent gamer reaction from that, because the virtual boning obsessed crowd is going to be throwing all kinds of shit fits (wow just saw that like to dislike ratio on YT, my goodness)

As for me, I think the game looks great. Like others have said, the occasional Bioware janky animation stuff is nothing new at all. It was there in the past, and ME is probably my favorite series ever. It's there now, and ME will likely remain my favorite IP.

I thought the small cutscene where Peebee and the Asari exchanged a couple of words looked perfectly fine FWIW. But of course, no one wants to mention or make a gif out of that.

Hopefully PC version is easy to mod so we get that "Hold E down for 3 seconds so you open the door" mechanic thrown into garbage day 0.

No, it's not. Reviewers aren't anywhere near as voracious as fans.
