Zelda BOTW Switch Day 0 Patch incoming

No worries. And yeah I think it's unlikely but I don't think it's impossible they'd just have to drop the resolution and stream that - you have to select that you're playing on gamepad - and it runs great and looks great there. For the first hour anyway, I didn't run into any rain while I had the chance to play.

Aw, c'mon man, Wii U GAF needs somebody to do a proper analysis here. You should try throwing all your stuff all over the ground, and then run around naked in a grassy area with 20 enemies chasing you during a lightning storm. Until you do that, Digital Foundry you are not, good sir. ;)

Wait, the Switch version has major frame rate problems too!? I'd heard about it having some minor dips on the plateau, but surely it can't be as bad the Wii U version (sub 20 FPS at times)?

Depends on the area. Long draw distance, lots of effects.

There's one area I can reliably get frame drops every time:
Around the Great Deku Tree
.

MHWilliams, not quoting your post in order to not see the tagged spoiler, but how often was the framerate choppy for you? Like, once a play session? Occasionally? Just trying to understand better how constant it is. And if this was when playing docked or not. Thank you!

Try go back to TV mode and test again...maybe big difference?

I can't, sorry, I don't have it, just got to play it on a friend's system. But I asked the question in this thread:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1349152

Someone's been playing for 2 days.

-I asked my buddy but he'll be at work for a few more hours. The other guy I asked has only played it on TV mode.

Yeah hah, I'm very curious to see digital foundry's take.

The Wii U patch adds more animals. Maybe this is similar?
It does? What sorts of animals got added (unless you just mean higher numbers of animals in the world)?

Yeah, I saw a stream of the Wii U version, and the guy was having a pretty rough time in that area. Performance was quite poor. I had hoped that the Switch version was very smooth overall, but it sounds like both have issues depending on what's displayed on screen. :/

I'd be fine if Nintendo offered a 720p mode for the Docked version if they can't optimize it any further. I'll take the stability over resolution, probably.

Why should it run on 720p docked when the Switch is much more powerful than the Wii U? It's clearly a Software issue. Hope we get a Patch..

Most of my play is docked because I was recording everything I did.

It's not consistent. The game runs pretty well for the most part.

I'm sure my colleagues over at Digital Foundry will have something up soon.

Ok, great. Thanks for the info! I'll be interested to see what DF says, but pretty well for the most part is really all I hoped to hear.

I'd also like to know this.
Yeah hah, I'm very curious to see digital foundry's take.

I'm curious to see what DF has to say as well. It seems like, for better or worse, BOTW is simply an incredibly ambitious game, perhaps too much so for Wii U and Switch to handle. That's a shame, but at least it's apparently one of the best games of all time. That kinda makes up for it.

Ah, OK, that doesn't sound too bad. I'm really interested to see how the two versions compare now. Anyway, thx for all the info, MHWilliams.

I absolutely need to see what Digital Foundry has to say, and show on Zelda docked, undocked, and the Wii version. Pre-and-post-patch.

Does this patch include interchangeable Voice and subtitles?
The only real bummer from the new Zelda for me.
I wanted the Miyazaki flair all the way!

I just did. Holy shit, it looks horrible at times!

Ehhh, not from what I've just seen, man. The GameXplain review made it seem even worse. The game seemed to straight up freeze for 20-ish seconds at one point. It seems pretty bad.

It is!? I've been hearing it was way worse than the Switch version. Not sure how true that is going off what I've just seen, though...

Looks to me like it's freezing up due to a bug and not because of performance. You see the same freezes in the Easy Allies review when attacking that same enemy.

No :P I have no fond memories of anything Zelda before the SFC game

Same here for me, on the domestic SNES.

Speaking of which, and I know these EGM articles will get some flack for calling it "Zelda 3/III", here's the material I found on A Link To The Past from that publication.

Some people have said the Wii U version consistently drops to around 20fps, with many drops to 15, any time you enter a village. Not that bad on Switch, I hope?

Yea absolutely, but I don't know for sure what the issue is. If there is some AA and an increased draw distance over the Wii U and undocked mode, I'd rather keep those and downgrade the resolution. But I have no idea why the docked mode tanks right now and the quick easy fix is probably downgrade resolution.

I do expect optimisations though, they are supporting the game with DLC until the end of the year, so I imagine free patches will also be worked on.

IMO 20fps is playable but 15fps is really bad, even on Wii U.

Hopefully this is improved.

You can set your TV Output to 480 or 720 in the Switch's System Menu. Not sure if that'll impact the game, but it should.

N64 Zelda was unacceptable

It was for me, in fact. I didn't even knew until recently it was running at 24FPS.

I always put the game down thinking about it's problems.

Anyways, we've got the best remake ever for it, so I had a chance to finally finish the game. And it's really one of the best games of all time.

That would be huge if it worked. Any word on if anyone tested it?

even with the disk version ò_ò?

I don't think there's an install. It's a cart and not a disk. ^^

I believe the original was actually as low as 20! And 17 in PAL regions.

Well it didn't remove the framerate problems. And the framerate is tanking quite often on the docked Switch. Sadly.

What happens when you set the docked console to output 720p? Does it still render 1080p and then downsample or does it run the game native 720p like it is in portable mode? If it just runs it like portable mode then I'll take the resolution hit for greater performance.
