Nintendo Switch Game Save Data Tied to One System, Nintendo Confirms

I swear it's stupid small things that Nintendo does that pisses people off. Like it has to bw super simple to tie the saves to a SD card, why do it so ass backwards.

Because the goddamn system doesn't come with an sd card like the 3ds does. It can simply be fixed with a system update.

It seems to me that Nintendo is really scared of console hackers. Looks like they are trying to minimize possible backdoors for exploits after the Wii, Wii U and 3DS being hacked to death.

Actually I have the theory that the OS was originally inspired by the Wii U and/or 3DS, so the recent wave of hacks (especially for 3DS) forced to Nintendo to rework in the OS, so for launch the system is very basic.

Who knows, anyway.

This theory doesn't really make sense because the Wii U was the exact same way and it got blown open. I know this because mine was stolen and I had to find this out.

That's a bummer. Just started an account for a co-worker to get started on Zelda. That would be a nice and hopefully easy fix for a system update.

Could save-file hacking be some sort of security precaution? Everything else feels so nimble and open, it's a shame this isn't a feature.

Hacked save files directly enable piracy on some consoles. Like the original Xbox can read DVD-R without ever opening the case.

Other companies like Sony and Microsoft have, you know, just improved their security instead of restricting it altogether like Nintendo has. It's the Republican way of solving problems, really. Instead of improving the system you just remove it, genius!

Update: A Nintendo representative simply confirmed the Switch situation to Polygon, saying, “At this time, it is not possible to transfer save data from one Nintendo Switch system to another.” The spokesperson provided no further information.

Do they even understand why this is a problem? This is some weak PR. Basically, "yeah, we know."

Yeah, Wii Mini took the worst possible route. Barely hackable because you *can't* do anything. No SD slot or network support.

I don't see what the problem with this. If your save corrupts it just means you get to experience the beauty of Switch games again.

This is inexcusable in this day and age. Same shit as Wii U.
Same shit as the vita, but at least they had cloud saves from day 1.

Nope, Vita has always had content management software allowing you to back up to PC. Games and saves are not tied to hardware.

Conspiracy theory: save transfer is not available because modified saves was one of the main ways of jailbreaking previous Nintendo consoles. Same reason why there's no web browser with the Switch.

Automatic cross-save with microSD and/or the fucking cloud + the option to do it manually if you want to.

They put so much effort in the parenting app/tool (which is amazing but a bonus), I don't understand why KEY features such as backing up save data isn't available at launch.

At least do some PR and say that yes, this is missing but this will be available next month or even "soon".

If it's only because of piracy then it's dumb as hell. Typical measure that backfires to the paying customers and maybe won't even prevent them from having the console pirated.

I agree. The only ameliorating condition is that it is so early in the Switch's life cycle. Not much to worry about transferring at this point.

I swear I could save game progress to my SD card on the 3DS for Persona Q. Perhaps with the Switch it will be game-specific?

How come OP didn't just buy his remote writer a new Switch and Zelda instead of sending the review system back through the mail? Seems like an unnecessary expense regardless of assumptions about how the system handles saves.

It's a long story that involves expectations from Nintendo's PR company that I won't get into. But yes, that's what I should have done.

I don't see a problem.
(Oh no I am defending it!)
If you want to play at a friend's house, well that is why it is portable.
If you do not have the system yet, change that. If your friend does not have it yet...well sorry for them.
Sadly there are alot of people who ruin things for everyone else.
I know people are chomping at the bit for the first exploit to be found in the system but that does not mean that companies have to make it that easy.

???

What if your system gets stolen, or it breaks and you need a new one?

How can you not see the problem in these two scenarios?

When it comes to a stolen or broken console, the Switch is essentially the same as the Wii U. Still have to call Nintendo to get your games on a new console.

Wait, so the account system is still useless? I heard that it would work during today's GiantBomb stream.

This make no sense, accounts aren't even locked the console anymore right? Why would they lock saves? This is some monkey paw shit.

Yeah, I've been corrected. I just never used it outside of cloud saves, and since the gamesaves were deleted from the console when you delete a game and I never used that software, I thought there was no way to manage it, my bad.
