NieR: Automata Spoiler Thread

I wonder what happened to all the non-corrupted YorHa units like 4S. I saw some YorHa units in the desert that were fine (probably due to Jackass' drug), and 4S is obviously still kicking around just fine, so I would imagine that there are still existing YorHa units aside form 2B, 9S, and A2 in the world.

No. I mean why the protagonists of Yoko Taro games have white hair?

Nier, Kaine, Zero, 2B, 9S & A2

Can't speak for the other games, but I felt like with NieR it was intentional that the protagonist are all white-coded, with fair features and bleach white hair and Grimoire Weiss the White Book, Kaine in light grey clothing, and Emil and his giant white skeleton had, while their enemies are black-coded monsters led by a Shadowlord and the calamitous Black Book Grimoire Noir.

Jesus Christ, I just beat the Route E credits fight and I started bawling when I realized what was happening.

I was...not prepared to sacrifice other people's save data in order to save the lives of a bunch of imaginary characters.

So I had to say yes and offer my own.

How would you feel if i tell you the choir singing in the background was the development team of the game?

For Nier 1, its meant as a colour contrasting and expectation delivery of what you do vs what you think your doing. Its all in service of the plot and themes.

For Automata, I take it a similar way. Its less in your face though, but it blends into the thematic ideas behind the blindfolds and the colour of character's eyes. For 9s and 2b is about being blind imo. For A2 imo its about being so jaded that its almost "bleached" in a way.

So I'm going to copy/paste something I wrote on a discord channel I'm part of so I don't have to re-write all of this...

Okay, so like.... I've been thinking a lot about Nier in general the last few days. And even with all the crazy and amazing stuff in the game I think the greatest part of Nier might just be nothing to do with any of the actual characters or story.
Route E is I think at least a pretty emotional ride. I didn't know what to expect especially since it cut right to the credits which left me thinking wait...where is the ending?
As you get dumped into the credits shooter game it seems neat but I didn't really until the last day or so really formulate why I think its so great.
It gets deliberately programmed at one point to be actually impossible to beat and eventually you get offered help. Which when you finally figure out that you have to accept to continue basically makes you invincible but its the core mechanic around that and the presentation of all of it that is so amazing.
First off the song that is playing.
"Weight of the World"
Which lyrically (might?) be from 2B's view point but I'm not sure.(edited)
Either way Its from the view point of someone who feels burdened and overwhelmed.
It was recorded in 3 languages which you get one version of for each of the A, B,C/D endings you beat.
In the route E ending though it turns into a medley of all the languages coming together to sing the song.
On top of that each time you die you see messages of encouragement not to give up from other players left for you.
Combining all of this with the fact that you learn that for you to be able to see the final cut-scene and ending where its insinuated that all 3 androids had their data recovered and will be okay.
Someone else has to sacrifice their save and let the game delete it.
Its this concept and presentation of unity and sacrifice that I think is really special.
While a silly video game I think that the concepts that these moments push forward of unity and sacrifice for others is sort of a small and insignificant glimpse into an idealized world where we could all be united.
And it is silly and just a video game but I think its the sentiment that I really ended up appreciating and being affected by.
Like giving up your save data in the scheme of things is by far like not a huge deal or sacrifice when lets face it PSN automatically backs shit up to the cloud if you have PS+ but again the sentiment is the thing that I really latched onto there.
Its a really special moment that I think is like a moment of levity and positive energy in a game that is otherwise largely deeply sad.
And I think the general sentiment I took away from the game's philosophy is that while the world might be cruel and meaningless doesn't mean that your life is meaningless.
I think Nier Automata is a really special game and this ending is just like one of many reasons why I think its so fucking rad.

Yeah, I just got ending E tonight, I have no words. Could this game be any more touching.

I need a drink. I need many drinks.

I keep checking the twitch page for the game just to see if anyone is close or at ending E, cuz I love watching their reactions. I've only caught like 2 people so far, but it was very good.

I watched someone get to the end and when it asked him if it was okay to delete his save 6 times he was like "lol yeah sure okay, whatever" and then when the game restarted and his save was gone he was PISSED and people in his chat were lighting him up like "They asked you 6 times why did you think they were joking?"

Does 9S's rampage across the towers have anything to do with Pascal's village going berserk? Would like to know what triggered that event.

Well, what part of them don't you get?

They're a visual representation of the machine network.
Oh my bad. So they are split to represent the in fighting in the machines? Did the the splint cause the different between certain groups of robots?

I think they're just twins because twins are a bit of a motif in Taro's games.

Then they end up infighting at the end over whether to destroy the androids or keep them alive to evolve themselves through conflict.

Basically, the split in A2's fight occurs because the Machine Consciousness evolves to the point where it starts to war with itself, because everything in this game is in a cyclical, endless conflict with one another.

Pascal's village was infected with the same logic virus that attacked YoRHa.
Ah so just random, nothing in particular struck this match.

Doesn't 9S' segment take place two weeks after his fall? I assumed A2's scenes took place before 9S'.
I thought it was a set of parallel events but you're probably right. Nier is all about the protagonists messing things up so my mind went to that suspicion first.

English VA of 2B and 9S are now streaming route B on Twitch!
https://www.twitch.tv/kylemccarley

They read through all non-voiced dialogs too. So cool.

Pretty good stream. Loved that Kyle (9S) mentioned this line was one of the weirdest from the game that he didn't really like/understand.

Easily one of the best.

Emil was basically ground zero at a nuclear blast and survived. I don't know how any of his clones were killed. (Ignoring how he made clones yet still can't make a body for himself.)

Game makes you forget Emil is a walking, sentient WMD until the secret final boss fight with him where its "Oh yeah, he could blow up the world by himself and fought off the Aliens by himself"

I thought Papa Nier was non-canon.

They're both canon in a way, at least according to a joke Taro made in an interview about timeloops

Fun Fact: According to Emil's Lords of Vermillion card (Yes, even there we can find new, exclusive lore) there exists a total number of 85,943,258 Emils on this planet

This is why I always have the iron pipe equipped (at least as part of the four you can spec as 2B/A2), but then it is also conveniently a strong weapon.

I usually mix the weapon selection but spears for 9s, combat bracers for 2b and A2 is whatever but is usually swords small or big. Iron pipe seems like it needs a good crit chip setup but got nothing noteworthy.

I mix everything else up for fun/variety, not aiming for optimal or best. And while spears are easy to go with for 9S I actually went with the Phoenix Sword mostly on last playthrough, just because. I tend to favor the big heavy-hitting but slow weapons, and they were really slow in original Nier but fun to use to helicopter through crowds lol.

Does anyone know if the game reprimands you for loading the cloud save after deleting your save for ending E? I might want to come back to it for trophies or if they ever decide to open those secret doors.

Nah, I did it yesterday and it just went back to my pre-deletion save.

I think it requires overwriting the system save, so it just goes back to pre-deletion menus. At least that's what I did
