What does Microsoft need to do to make Xbox successful again?

I honestly think Xbox is great. But, worldwide its appeal is not good. I spend an obscene amount of time playing on Xbox, but every great game that I love playing just isn't having the success it's expected to have: from Quantum Break to Sunset Overdrive to D4 to Gears of War 4. I don't want them to stop making the games I enjoy playing. Here's what I would do if I was Phil Spencer:

1) 343's next two projects should not be a main line Halo FPS. For the next 6-8 years, 343 should be focused on two projects: Perfect Dark 3 and a Mass Effect style Halo RPG. First-person shooting is 343's bread and butter - they are excellent at the genre. Perfect Dark 3 is an old Rare IP, and hasn't had a game in almost a decade, and having someone of 343's stature make a new FPS game that isn't Halo and is a totally different IP would be fantastic. Also, Halo's universe and world-building is phenomenal. They should leverage that and make a big western space exploration RPG that involves Spartans, the Covenant, Halo rings, planets like Reach, Earth, different monitors like 343 Guilty Spark. Include high intrigue and drama between the UNSC, Catherine Elizabeth Halsey, Cortana, the Arbiter, etc... Basically take the universe that the Halo trilogy was a part of, and spin that into Mass EFfect.

2) Rare should become a new IP factory - there should be a mandate that for the next 6 years they do not make any sequels. Give them the time they need to polish Sea of Thieves to excellence. Once that's done, it's on to the next one (new IP). If Sea of Thieves is a hit, then contract a talented 2nd/3rd-party developer to do the ground work on a sequel, while Rare works on some new IP. At the same time, leverage Rare's old IPs, like Perfect Dark 3 (giving that to 343) or Banjo Kazooie 3 (give that to Playtonic). Rare can provide input/leadership on those projects, like they did with Killer Instinct.

3) The Coalition and Remedy need to make single player DLC for Gears of War 4 and Quantum Break. We should have already had trailers for some DLC involving Kait and JD (for Gears 4) or some DLC involving Jack Joyce and Beth Wilder (for Quantum Break).

4) Microsoft can't allow big 3rd-parties to skip them anymore. This January to March period really should have been Horizon Zero Dawn versus Zelda Breath of the Wild versus Halo Wars 2. Each company basically had one internally-developed 1st party game. But it was more than that. It turned out to be Guilty Gear + Yakuza 0 + Nioh + 999 + Virtue's Last Reward + Persona 5 + Tales of + Nier Automata + Zelda Breath of the Wild versus Halo Wars 2.

I mean what the fuck. Those third-party games should be coming on Microsoft's system, and the fact that they didn't is a huge failure from Microsoft. Whatever the reason, Microsoft has to fix it. Is it that the audience that buys those games doesn't exist on Xbox? Microsoft should cultivate a strategy to win back that audience.

Imagine a January to March period where the following happens: Sony gets these releases: Killzone 4, Assassin's Creed 7, Black Ops 4, Battlefield 5, Madden, NBA2K, GTA6. And Microsoft releases Banjo Kazooie 3. That's basically what happened. Microsoft and Sony releasing one internally-developed game (Killzone versus Banjo) but a myriad other 3rd-party games were exclusive to PS4. Why should anyone buy an Xbox over a PS4 in that scenario?

5) Microsoft should have parity with Sony when it comes to any sort of publishing leniency. What I mean is: Sony doesn't have a 50k print limit for discs. Microsoft does. Because of this, PS4 fans get a Shovel Knight physical release. Microsoft doesn't. Also, Sony doesn't have any sort of indie clauses enforcing certain release dates or content. Microsoft does. Presumably because of this, there are a myriad of games that aren't releasing on Xbox. For fuck's sake, Fez and Dust Elysian Tail were released on PS4 but not on Xbox. Microsoft needs to fix that.

I said it once and I'll say it again, there just isn't much demand for those types of games on the XBox One and I do not really think there is much Microsoft can do to alleviate that. The audience is on Playstation mostly. I feel that Japan is a lost cause for Microsoft and certain third parties are not going to keep investing huge amounts into development when there is no audience to purchase them or any return investments. Sure, Microsoft can pursue and invest money into these games, but it will most likely not be profitable for them at all. If they expect games like Sunset Overdrive and ReCore to sell millions, why are they going to be satiated when games like Kingdom Hearts or Blue Dragon 2 sell a paltry 10,000 units on XBox after they spent millions securing it for their system. Porting is expensive also and when money is not made back, it's rarely not worth the trouble and effort. Microsoft should concentrate on creating a more stellar and larger first party presence and focus on the type of games their demographics wants instead of trying to force certain niche games onto them. Make your own RPG's, fighters, 2d games, epic adventures, etc with their flavor or style to help differentiate it from competition. I would love more diversity on XBox also, but seems like I am in the minority when I see XBox gamers just play FPS, after FPS with the occasional sports games and GTA5. Of course they should take risks also, but it is the same way companies like Rockstar do not put games like GTA5 and Red Dead on Nintendo systems. Sure, they would be cool on Nintendo systems, but Rockstar knows there is a MUCH smaller audience there for those games.

Keep doing what they have been lately, bringing more games and developers to the platform and creating exciting, powerful hardware to showcase them. When these threads are a daily occurrence on GAF you know Xbox is headed in the right direction. ;)

Xbox is no longer a platform "alone" since they added games that allow the players to play them both on PC and Xbox. This isn't a bad thing per se, on the contrary, it's quite good. I really believe Xbox exclusives will only get less and less.

Some Phil Spencer spin right there.

I've purchased multiple X1s btw.

Pretty much how it's looking.

I'm fine with PC pulling away exclusives,
as adding pc support can greatly expand the audience of their games. We could be getting a bunch of great games on the xb1 that may not be justified otherwise with how the console's sales are going.

We just aren't getting that. The first party output from MS is embarrassing and a string of bombs and cancellations.

It's a great forza box though and I appreciate their efforts into BC. I assume that will go to PC soon too.

Microsoft just doesn't the fan following, the worldwide appeal and strong brand recognition to stand out big with innovative ideas.

Apple and Sony can as market leaders.

Microsoft thinks they are up there with the big boys and they are not.

Come back down to reality son. Sony is a pimple on Apple, Google, Amazon, and MS ass.

Hes talking about within the console industry.

Apple doesn't have a console, so try again.

What are you replying to ? No one said Apple had a console. The point is that Apple and Sony can take risks as leaders in the tablet/phone and console markets.

Hate to break it to ya. The only thing they got going hardware wise is PS. Nothing else is selling for them. They are basically a high risk company with Playstation and Insurance keeping them afloat. You can't even compare them to the big boys.

This sounds like something you'd find on Gamespot's System Wars forum.

Sony owns and manufactures an amazing smartphone brand called Xperia.

Their Sony Xperia phones generates them money (it didn't until sometime ago but they're turning a profit now on that) and get released on a yearly basis. They are pretty much the most competent smartphones out right now and darn brilliant mobile gaming phones at that.

PlayStation generates billions yearly along with Insurance. Sony Pictures have Spiderman, the Smurfs (brings in the family audience dough) and they had Passengers not long ago that did well worldwide.

While Sony Pictures doesn't financially contribute in the billions like PlayStation, they bring in a multitude of millions with movie hits everyyear.

Sony is also MASSIVE on tv and cable.

This isn't 2011 when they had a value market cap of like 11 billion only, Sony has recovered extensively since then and has gained major footholds in the Cinema, movie, tv, music, mobile and video game industries.

they can start by not kicking you off your session once an update is available. this is fucking rage inducing. one moment youre in the middle of playing, next it shuts your game down and when you select skip and stay offline it refuses to start the game. fucking idiotic design

Yeah Microsoft is MUCH richer than Sony, but to act like Sony has nothing going on but PlayStation and insurance is being very disingenuous. They have a high profile presence in a lot of markets.

Bring back J. Allard.

Bring back J. Allard.

They were my platform of choice for over a dozen years with stuff like Crimson Skies, Midtown Madness, 1vs100 on powerful consoles with some good UI's.
For some reason it felt like they lost their creativity the last third of the 360's life span.
Scorpio is a start but I have a wait and see attitude.
Create some sort of douchebag free Xbox live platinum service that is heavily modded and maybe they could bring back some magic.

They just need to green the right games at the right time, find more first/third party relationships that make sense and go from there. I'm kind of glad we aren't seeing any reactionary, tit for tat game announcements in response to competitors.

Someone there has to be on board with getting new games and have an eye for new stuff and they need one more person to keep the suits out of the equation, trying to cram other broader MS initiatives into said products... making them revolve around that one dumb idea.

This is like something straight out of gamefaqs.

I guess that we should wait for this year's E3. If Scropio launches this year, I assume they are holding back everything to come with a bang and will just annouce everything by then. Maybe even cancelled some games because of Scropio? I guess, lol.

MS would need something along the lines of a Halo on Xbox1. Sony killed the Xbox One Lineup in Q1/2017 it's insane. The XB1 is selling horribly and I don't see the Scorpio do much to change that, Mass Effect Andromeda and Wildlands being mediocre third party releases doesn't really help the system. The fact that you can get almost every XB1 game for Windows 10 isn't helping either...

These companies should play to their strengths rather than trying to mimic each other.

Spot on. Nintendo is doing this with the Switch. Sony is doing it with their recently released single player titles with good reception.

I feel that Microsoft will get to this alongside Scorpio -- best multiplats (something the Xbox brand was known for), solid multiplayer games, and innovative system features.

Honesty what are they the market leader other then games?

I didn't say anything about market leading, I said they aren't failing like they were a few years ago. The majority of their divisions are profitable.

Though I believe they are the leading label in the music industry.

PlayStation generates billions yearly along with Insurance. Sony Pictures have Spiderman, the Smurfs (brings in the family audience dough) and they had Passengers not long ago that did well worldwide.

Sony Pictures has been a joke for a while now. They've had more misses than hits. If they didn't have Spiderman, they'd be in even worse shape than they are now.

And their TV division was hurting for a while, but it seems they've turned that around as well.

Demonstrate an active interest in what your customers want, instead of transparently catering to the desires of retail partners and shareholders. This is what made the Allard/Bach era Xbox such a compelling proposition.

For example: online console play was something gamers were excited that the original Xbox and 360 advanced substantially. Microtransactions and advertising integrated into the user experience are something shareholders get excited about that gamers might put up with, but they sure don't feel like a net improvement. These seemed to be a growing focus as Allard/Bach were edged aside and the latter era 360 and Xbox One came to the forefront.

There are plenty of comparable examples. I get excited about products that were made with my needs considered first and foremost. I get turned off by those that were made with the manufacturer and their partners' needs at the forefront.

Pussy grab simulator...

Haha, kidding obviously, though I'm sure it would help move some units in Japan.

They need to uncancel Scalebound, or make an exclusive game I care about. UNtil then my S will just get used on UHD BDs, which is sad. I guess I could play some of these old games I haven't beat yet.

Microsoft cant take risks because they arent the market leader. Thats very true, they were a market leader when the OG Xbox launched and created Xbox Live which took Sony years to figure out. The Xbox outsold PS2 very quickly and MS became a market leader.

Now MS isnt a leader in anything. There is no innovation left.

Did i do that right?

Outside of Halo and Gears What exclusive Multiplayer games Does Xbox have? Also those games were Giants within there genres. These Days there's so many choices in those genres. Actually I think Sony has more games with Multiplayer available ps4 VS X1.

Was gonna make another thread but we have too many Xbox threads talking about the same shit over and over as it is lol.

We're heading into one of my favorite times of the year. Over the next couple of months, we'll finalize our plans for our E3 2017 briefing. As rehearsals begin and we see all the major announcements come to life, there's an air of excitement and anticipation that fills the room that's built around one common feeling: ‘We can't wait to see how our fans are going to react'. That's why I love attending E3 every year. It's one of the opportunities I get to really interact with our fans, and experience the amazing energy and passion they bring to everything to do with Xbox and gaming. Xbox fans really are the standard by which we measure fan-centricity at Microsoft.

Outside of Halo and Gears What exclusive Multiplayer games Does Xbox have?

Most of their upcoming AAA titles are multiplayer focused. I would add Forza in too as being multiplayer focused. The Xbox brand since it started has been heavily multiplayer focused.

Also those games were Giants within there genres. These Days there's so many choices in those genres. Actually I think Sony has more games with Multiplayer available ps4 VS X1.

The PS4 has more games period so that wouldn't surprise me but I think both systems are pretty much similar in terms of multiplayer AAA titles. Pretty much comes down to what someone prefers for genres/premises.

new ip. i want them to create something other than fps/tps, take some damn risks. sony produce games like littlebigplanet, heavy rain, modnation racers etc. and although they may not be great sellers they offer variety.

ms strong suit for me has always been multiplayer so as long as they keep making gears/halo i will always buy their console even though halo is pretty crap now so yeah just gears. come to think of it, i might not buy their next console considering gears is now on pc. hmm

for fps yes its true halo is no longer the premier multiplayer experience but in the tps realm gears is unmatched, nothing even comes close. uncharted is ok as it tlou but they are not in the same league as gears.

Scorpio
Crackdown
A new Fable by whatever studio you want to make it
A new re-imagimg of halo, they could make it like Destiny and really explore the universe that is Halo. Shared open world PvP experience.

Those are just suggestions, I'll be happy with Scorpio and sea of Thieves.

Come on with this, people own consoles because their friends play on consoles, because they don't want to be bothered with upgrading PC's and consoles are just set up and go.

As far as that silly comment about Nintendo being a console great? Imo it hasn't been great since the game cube or the Nintendo 64.

Microsoft has enjoyed more success in the same amount of time. This weird desire to see Microsoft fail around here is a little unsettling.

Cause Wii wasn't great and Nintendo's portable business doesn't exist. This is Neogaf there is an equal desire to see every console maker fail; now it is Microsoft's turn.

This thread will not end well if last thread is anything to go by.

But in a ll seriousness Xbox as a brand needs a restart and not scorpio. But a restart in a new generation with a great team that understands the heritage of the console, and their parent company.

Since it's a western Box treat it as such and sign the shit out of western developers from all over the PC frontier. Buy studios now that are making great games on PC. Have them develop exclusives that will work on both PC xbox through steam and have cross play work on a network level as to not force that shitty Xbox platform on pc.

Make long lasting deals for big relationships like with Blizzard or something.
Reopen a new Lion head studios and give them creative freedom to make what ever they want as long as it's some kind of AAA game.
Don't interfere with 343, the coalition and let them have created freedom to take a break from their franchises.

If they made the xbox more like the straight up PC style console and allowed games like starcraft to be play either with a controller or mous/keyboard Korea would eat that up and possibly see the xbox as a way to play PC titles for cheap without needing an internet cafe or a expensive PC.

It would help their universal appeal.

They are going to have to do some money hatting. Especially if they want some results quickly.
It takes time to build up a talented studio and fresh IPs.....

Should be it's own thread

GREAT read

Should absolutely be it's own thread. This is directly linked to the recent discussion around xbox but this is a deeper look at one of it's facets.

"My favorite international corporation is a big boy and your favorite international corporation isn't."

This is the level of discourse we've reached now.

I think MS had 2 MP games that were Hits. They never necessarily focused more on MP games, although I think they are now. Even last gen Ps3 had Mag,Warhawk,Starhawk,Uncharted resistance,Killzone,Socom among other.

So MS focused more on MP and Sony Single player is really a myth. As I said MS just had to Major Multiplayer hits.

What I would like to see:

* If creating new studios isn't a possibility at the moment, be more creative with what you have. It's business but it shouldn't stifle creativity completely, gaming to me is about fun, new gameplay ideas, new worlds, new characters, new IP. Every generation brings something of that ilk, why should this gen or future ones be any different. Expand teams, put the bean counters down for a minute , loosen the grip on the overly predictable sequel factory routine.

* Someone who gets gaming and is passionate about it above the role of Phil Spencer is a must for me. If you are going to be more creative then at least have someone who is more inside with gaming than Office or Windows. I feel that is part of Xbox's problem, they have potentially a great brand/box there but the ones with the most to say and green light things perhaps have more of a passion or expertise in non gaming like Office. OG Xbox guy Seamus Blackley says similar here, from 24.50

https://youtu.be/8xSr70tQzw0

* Keep improving the UI. It still needs work in my opinion, I know fellow Xbox fans who still can't stand what they are doing in this area. I don't hate the UI but I don't love it either. Even the little things like customisation I feel they are behind Sony there although they giving more options for profile pics in the next week or two which is something.
