Vox: Comedians cover Trump better than actual news

I watch all the comedians they showed, and they are all great. Samantha Bee in particular is killing it.

As for CNN, well, when you have to fill 24 hours, you gotta keep people watching somehow, and for them, they feel like having the usual group of talking heads is better than dead air. But it doesn't earn them respect from either side. Trump hates them because they say things contrasting with his message. Everyone else hates them because they give airtime to people who will repeat Trump's crazy views.

I couldn't finish this because it was pissing me off too much.

Comedians can come out and say things that call bullshit because they don't have to worry about integrity. There's a reason outlets like New York Times don't just come out and call BS, because if they are wrong it hurst their integrity.

I'll argue that comedians constantly making jokes and providing satire only does more to "normalize" Trump and give more ammo to his supporting base.

Your section about integrity is right.

Your section about normalization is totally wrong.

If this were during the Bush administration I'd say this was true. But only Colbert has been consistently on point as far as comedians go this time around.

The Washington Post and the New York Times alone have outclassed everything we saw, be it journalism or the Old Daily Show, during the Bush admin.

The most important point in the video is the 24 hour news cycle validating bullshit with legions of talking heads going on and on about it.

The requirement to fill air time has created a dangerous attack vector for propagandists. It's not just about repetition eroding people's sense of reality (though that is super effective). When bullshit is being talked about 24/7 as if it's "controversial" it increases the odds of random viewers catching out-of-context snippets of lies and accepting data points without questioning them.

Bullshit has more exposure than voices contradicting the bullshit. Guess what educates the public.

The Vox video in the OP encapsulates just what makes watching comedians cover the news so much better than actual news. It's such a joy to watch John Oliver, Samantha Bee, Seth Meyers, and Stephen Colbert constantly call out Trump's bullshit on everything. It also helps people like us know that we are definitely not alone in this era.

Surrogates are the bane of intelligent discourse.
I'm 43 and it makes me sad that a ton of people alive today have no recollection of when news was actually news and not just another form of entertainment.

There was a time long ago when you'd watch reporters covering a political story and have zero idea of what that reporter's personal political views were. Seems like a fever dream now.

It's sad that comedians are a more reliable news source than our mainstream media outlets.
The thing is that this is not NEW, for me it has been like this for over 10 years now used to be colbert report and daily show (JS) had more accurate information in a 30 min time span then any 2 hours "news" program. (at least from the USA).
And now more then ever they are they ones with a few others now that are far more reliable and watchable then "regular news"

I enjoy Vox so much. They've become such a tour-de-force in videography. Seriously. I check youtube- at least 5-10 times a day, and there is often 2-3 new videos every day from Vox.

Not only are these videos conceise and dense, I also find them informative and interesting. A couple of them have really impressive motion graphic design behind them.

I think we need to stop calling reality TV opinion-based entertainment networks as "news" networks. CNN, FOX, MSNBC aren't airing news. They air a headline, and then a makeup-clad actor tells you what their producer wants them to say for 5 minutes, which is opinion, not news. It's televised Op-Ed from a producer. When they have "expert" panels, producers are telling each "expert" what to say to make entertaining reality TV. Their special effects and makeup budget dwarfs their journalism and reporting budget. They shouldn't be called news anymore.

The New York Times, NPR, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, etc., are news.

This Onion video still holds true today: https://youtu.be/9U4Ha9HQvMo

This is amazing thank you

The problem is those 3 networks are the "news" source for 90% of Americans and it shows. I can't have the simplest debate with Republican buddies anymore without hearing a complete regurgitation of the previous night's episode of "Outnumbered" nowadays. I almost have to look over my shoulders to make sure that they don't have cue cards.

Yeah, it's a huge goddam problem. I don't think there's a fix for it.

We've blurred the lines between entertainment reality TV and news so much that we've elected a fucking reality TV host as our president, to basically play the role that he played on a reality TV show.

My small effort is to donate to the news (NPR), buy the news (NYT & WSJ digital), and stop calling FOX, MSNBC, and CNN "news" anymore. I genuinely believe that you become less informed watching them than if you watched Pro Wrestling or Watch What Happens Live - New Jersey Housewives.

That's why i watch more John Oliver, Samantha Bee,Seth Meyers,Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert because it is funny but like vox says it makes you think what is really happening behind the scenes and makes you think with common sense.

As someone who watches all the same shows, I'd still caution taking everything that these comedians say as gospel. I've found that they do occasionally make mistakes reporting the facts, though their intentions are generally good.

Yeah, sometimes viewers ask, "Well why can't you do that?" and they don't really explain or avoid talking about the factor at all.

It's also disingenuous to say that news organizations don't call Trump out on his bullshit, either. As much as it sucks having Trump surrogates on CNN, the hosts worth watching (Cooper and Tapper especially) will still pin their asses to the wall -- which, in a way, feels like calling out Trump on his shit very directly.

The whole point is that having bullshitters on TV makes hosts calling out this nonsense redundant, because people have already checked out.

I watch all episodes of Lwt with John Oliver (it's a must watch in my opinion, it's so good at calling bullshit, problems and issues in america and around the world and every episode highlight which is to focus on one topic with well researched segments is such a great concept and works really well with him).

Colbert, Meyers and Noah are also quite good but honestly I personally only watch their ''highlights'' on youtube (e.g. ''a closer look'' segment from Meyers is a favorite of mine).

I watched a few complete episodes but I wasn't really interested in most of the stuff other than their highlight segments.
