Sony are killing it for 3rd Party Marketing / Exclusive Content Deals

That's not what I heard. I heard ReSpawn/EA wouldn't accept anything other than straight up dedicated servers for Titanfall totally paid for by Sony and when Sony refused they ran to MS asking for the same thing and got the "Cloud Power" BS and settled for that.
That BS worked pretty damn well

Mhmm, and I never said there's a tonne of people supporting Sony's marketing shenanigans either, simply that I've seen just as many hope for Cyberpunk 2077 to be an XBO exclusive, and I'll specify it further to wanting it to be Scorpio's killer app. :)

That you decided to overlook the purpose of my post and fixate on that one point tells me you really don't care about what I had to say, and if you asked a little more nicely I would bother to expend the effort it would take to backtrack on the threads I've visited and direct you to the relevant posts (which only one poster asked for in jest), but since, like I said, you really don't care about the crux of my post, and instead want to act like a petty brand loyalist defending any possible prospect of your 'camp' looking bad (see, i can generalise too) - I'm going to say no and just enjoy you post some more about how evil Sony and it's fans are.

I love this post, because it sums you up quite nicely. There is so much verbal diarrhoea that it actually hurts my brain. If you can't grasp how saying "just as many" implies equal to the poster you're quoting, then there is no hope for talking to you and I won't continue to be baited by your asinine comments. I should have asked a little more nicely for you to prove your false statements, really? The guy asking you for proof was just asking in jest? Yeah, like I said, no point.

You have nothing left to say and instead of taking that L and going home you pull the good ol' console warrior card. Talking out of your ass and labeling me as something just because I was calling your bullshit out (which is pretty sad, I don't agree with you so I must be defending my "camp" or whatever the fuck you said) just shows you projecting, big time. FYI, the only console I'm invested into at the moment (if you wanna call it that)is the Switch because I will be taking it with me to tech after I finish basic. But keep on fighting the good fight, warrior.

Oh dear. No, that isn't even remotely true. Where did you hear that, N4G?

Lol, I was patiently waiting for your response and you did not disappoint.

The Titanfall story I love / hate the most is the MS deal was meant to only be for a year and then when MS was getting its ass handed to it after E3 that year they went to EA and locked the deal down for the life of TF1 and Respawn found out afterwards the deal was now lifetime and not super happy about it.

Obviously you never know whats gonna happen and who would have guessed Microsoft would have messed up the Xbox One reveal so but the Titanfall / Xbox partnership really screwed that brand up and a big part of the reason 2 bombed.

Should have been co marketing + XX day DLC deal. I think the Titanfall franchise would be in a different place right now.

Sandwhiching the sequel between Battlefield & Call of Duty didn't do it any favours either unfortunatly. A shame too considering how great it is.

Has nothing to do with that. You launch the game in between Call of Duty AND Battlefield, that will happen. EA made such a stupid mistake and I feel bad for the developers. Would have thrived as a spring title considering how good it is.

I said it was a big reason. Not the only reason.

In the end it just sucks Titanfall was a franchise that could have been huge but got messed up by a collection of publisher business decisions. Cant argue that Respawn totally fulfilled its end of the bargain with great games. Maybe 1 was a bit thin on content but you got that "but its basically a launch game" free pass.

I don't think name shaming was needed tbh.

You could have got your point across without naming posters.

That's not name shaming at all. That's naming. Using names can help here and there. The names are there so you can refer to the posts and see them for yourself.

Good on them I say, encourages competition. MS fucked themselves at the XB1 announcement and Sony just cleaned up. Exclusive content is fine by me, if I owned a business I would want some aspects of that business to offer things that other businesses in the same field dont. Makes sense to me.

It's pretty shitty for consumers in general, but I never actually participate in buying games with massive amounts of DLC map packs.

So while I have a PS4 I don't really care, but when you're the "winning" console in specific markets, you get the ability to do the double whammy with stuff like this.

This thread is filled with so much fake news. Every junior has their own story of what happened behind the Respawn/Microsoft deal.

I thought it was a sales thread type of thing. The way these comments went you would think op went "Aye! Sony I love your third party marketing deals Ha get rekt Microsoft and Nintendo".

People are a little sensitive in these trying times. For the great E3 Console War is coming.

They've timed these marketing deals pretty damn well.

I can't think of a more effective way to tackle the combined hype of Scorpio and NSW this holiday season, other than a substantial price-cut.

Smart moves by Sony~~~

"Sony are killing it...". Did you really expect analytics?

Exclusive content should have been excluded from the conversation I think, if we look at it from a purely marketing perspective - Sony has nabbed some pretty damn big names to associate itself with, which in turn limits how Scorpio can and will be marketed. I'm curious to see how they both fare this Fall and there's an interesting conversation to be had about it, just not in this thread.

I don't have a love for any specific console manufacturer.

Therefore, I buy all the consolez, and these deals make me buy the game for that specific console if I care for the exclusive DLC for that specific game.

Otherwise I buy the version that performs the best which is PS4 most of the time.

As far as I'm concerned, the 360 DLC deals from last gen, including GTA IV, COD, Fallout,Etc, are what made this a defacto strategy. Then you have their JRPG moves which were designed around keeping traditionally "Playstation franchises" off of the PS3, including Star Ocean and Tales of Vesperia, the latter of which never made it to PS3 stateside.

When the community and press let stuff like that slide, it helps establish it as a standard. We are well beyond the point of turning back.

Sure, I still think they're absolute bullshit though and Sony should be shamed and not celebrated for doing it.

I can easily imagine this being the other way around and MS having these deals and I'd be highly annoyed since I game almost exclusively on PS4 (and Nintendo systems).

Just look at Destiny I think it is where they held content back on Xbox for a fucking year. It's sick and fuck Sony for doing it. They're literally paying to withhold content from other gamers. Never once have I said to myself man I really want Game X for this system but they're not getting some content for months because of the competitor, so I think I'll buy the competitors version instead just to have this map or that weapon first.

They're "killing it" at one of the worst trends in the industry. Congrats.

This is IMHO the worst thing in this industry, stupid exclusive content. It's just annoying and stupid. We should not support that. Glad, that Microsoft is not supporting this crap.

You do know that MS popularised this last generation with COD, GTA 4, Skyrim etc? Content only, content first, and marketing games for one console was very successful for the 360. This was done more so in later stages of the 360 probably to supplement the lack of first party or new IPs. The difference here is that first and 2nd party is still strong on Sony's platform. Now MS has neither. They did it this gen with Titan Fall and Tomb Raider...

I'm sure they would again if the strategy/investment team let's them. For some reason this gen the xbox division of MS seem to have less of a budget. Halo marketing was a lot less and marketing in general is a lot less. Could be just my perception. In the end though Sony is dominant and getting these deals maintains mind share and interest. Just like the 360.

Good guy Microsoft huh. All for the consumer am I right

Guys, stop living in the past. Seriously. Microsoft changed a lot. Don is gone. Not only Xbox, also the rest of microsoft, just look at surface book, surface studio etc.

Just look at OP:

PlayStation

- Call of Duty
- Destiny
- Battlefront
- Red Dead Redemption 2

Xbox
- Shadow of Mordor

4 vs 1. Also, Shadow of Mordor might only because of it will be optimized for Scorpio and they need a 3rd party game to market together with Scorpio, so this one I actually can understand.

And I don’t have to mention all the positive stuff microsoft introduced, right? Like free BC, or soon allowing us to return digital game purchases etc.. nothing of that is offered by sony.

but hey, lets bash on microsoft and lets love sony. #4ThePlayers

titanfall 1 sold over 7 or 8 million. A number 2 will be lucky to reach with the inclusion of a single player and a new console. Exclusivity had almost no baring on how 2 turned out sales wise.

There's a lot of things that led to titanfall 2 "bombing" and the first one being exclusive will be near the bottom end of the stick

Did not like it when MS did it.. do not like it now that Sony is doing it.

Bad for consumers all around . Sad that people are actually excited about it imo. The same people praising it this gen were the same people crying when content was delayed or locked out all together on their hardware of choice last THIS gen .

Don't even need to look that far, sadly.

See, this is the post I would instantly think is parody if I didn't spend so much fucking time on here.

I see these kinds of deals a lot better than total exclusivity and have a huge impact < a lot of gamers don't know that Destiny released on XBO!

Respawn have since admitted the game wouldn't have released without that exclusivity.

Just in case you can see past those goggles
Which has been the case since 2013.

😂😂😂😂😂 This is almost MS level spins 👍.

I have never been a fan of this practice. It was annoying when Microsoft did it with the COD series and GTA IV on the Xbox 360 and annoying when Sony did it with Destiny.

Posts in this thread stating that Microsoft hasn't participated in this practice are way off... they originated it,

It's understandable from a corporate standpoint, but anti-consumer. It's something I strongly disliked about Microsoft last generation, and Sony this gen.

I don't mind marketing deals, but the fact I likely won't even know the performance of many of these games on scorpio because the developers often aren't even allowed to acknowledge the other platforms is annoying. Exclusive content is also anti-consumer.

I find marketing in general interesting so from that angle I can appreciate the effort. As a consumer any timed exclusive shit can kick rocks. I obviously don't mind if something is exclusive because a platform maker paid for it to be developed. Getting marketing rights doesn't mean jack shit to me but it probably helps the company that pays for it in some ways, otherwise they wouldn't pay for it, so it's fun to see who gets what. I remember people going apeshit when it was rumored that Sony would have CoD marketing. I thought the jubilation and salt were equally hilarious. But Sony is crushing it this gen and having the most popular games associated with your platform in marketing is another defense so I get it.

Blame the third party publishers that facilitate these kinds of deals. No one is forcing them to accept money from either Microsoft or Sony, which is why I don't understand why the anger is directed at the platform holders.

It sucks for customers who own the competitor's platform, but Microsoft and Sony only care about being competitive. I doubt Sony cares, nor should they, about upsetting Xbox One owners and vice versa. It's business, plain and simple.

This, 100x this. Sony is a business like any other. They make these deals because the publisher wants to. If Sony didn't make them one of their competitors would.

I don't care about 3rd party marketing/exclusive shit but if it allows them to keep putting out games like Gravity Rush 2, fair enough

That line of thought doesn't work when the first game was a relative success, if they released within similar conditions then failed you may have a point, but if you review the first games treatment compared to the second you can easily say that EA didn't put the same level of marketing and support MS did. So no, the first game deal didn't screw up the franchise, it got it off to a great start, but the way the second game released with its scaled back marketing was the difference MS brought, and TF2 definitely suffered without it. Also, like others have said, it released during a packed month.

Remember the first game wouldn't have happened unless MS stepped in. Read the post mortem, it's all there.

Yeah it's why I was more pissed at Crystal Dynamics/Sqaure Enix about the Tomb Raider deal than Microsoft. Microsoft asked and CD/SE accepted.
