Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

Was able to update through tv/WiFi yesterday. I like that the menus are smaller and they seem snappier but it also seems to load slower. Here is hoping they can update the YouTube app to enable HDR now that HLG support is provided. At least we got Android 7.0 for this model. Here is hoping they have a specific X800D firmware update aoon that inproves input lag, they were able to do it for a lot of models pre-X800D. But Sony has never been great with firmware or support like that. Look at excluding X800D from bluetooth headset support even though the hardware is there, the android version is there. They just didn't want to do it.

The fact that this thread is 71 pages long and still going strong means this question might be really obvious:

So, is this TV worth it?

I am really happy with my X800D.

It's probably the best of the "budget" priced TVs from everything I have seen.

Mid-range seems to be Samsung KS8000 and Sony X900E.

Whenever I used HDR on any PS4, everything looked washed out. But the update has managed to fix something. With some setting changes, it seems to be looking better. Gonna fiddle with it some more.

Let me know what comes up? I'm very interested in how the colors look now. Most everything in HDR seemed to be washed out.

Sounds good. I haven't got a PS4 Pro or anything so a full-on 4K HDR TV isn't really necessary, but nice to know that this is decent at the price for when I'm looking. Thanks for the reply.

Honestly I felt HDR was more vivid myself during some Mass Effect Andromeda gameplay but that may have been the new patch they released. Again, properly done HDR should never be washed out. Planet Earth II looks pretty spectacular with HDR on versus off, even if I use Vivid mode.

So, is this TV worth it?

Worth it at 43" sure. However there is a new X800E model now in stores. No reviews yet but should be identical or better in every way. The X900E is a far better tv at 49" now with full array local dimming and nearly 3x the sustained brightness. Have to see how the 49" X800E is now compared to X900E.

X800D 43" here, just confirming HDR is substantially better all around with the new firmware. Horizon and FFXV look alarmingly good now for such a reasonably priced TV.

So theres like an update app that details all the new fimrware stuff. It mentions pip, Bluetooth headphones support, etc

I try to update says no updates.

How do I do pip?

Bluetooth headphones also still don't work.

Honestly I love my 49 x800d but can't help but feel salty over how much better than 800e is.

Is that a good panel? It is the 49inch one a better panel?

Memory seems to say there's a difference, but it is it worth it vs the size?

Edit: this seems to be the 8077 not the 8088, I take it the 8088 is better?

8077/8088 are just colour swaps, 55 and 49 had the same panel, the 43 had the VA panel with better blacks.

I got the european x8005d,.no update yet, reading it has better hdr makes me want to wait playing mass effect :(

Same here, does anybody know when the update will hit Europe/Germany and if I may ask, what does it do exactly? The tv doesn't get brighter suddenly !? Or is it related to color accuracy?

Thanks :)

Sorry for the delay in reply, seems like your questions have been answered though :)

Quick question guys, my surround sound recently received a FW update to include "features 4K pass-through capability" so with this TV and my Pro connected to the surround sound I'll be good to go at 4k once the HDMI leads are swapped out for new ones supporting the resolution? TIA

I think so. I just picked up a 4k pass through receiver and I imagine it will all just work.

Great stuff, will there be any problem with HDR going through the receiver as well? I'm not that up to speed on the tech so apologies of these are daft questions just want to make sure I'm going to get the full benefit of the 4k/HDR with what I've got or if I need to look at upgrading.

I don't know about yours but mine says:

  • All HDMI terminals (4 inputs, 1 output) support 4K UHD video and HDR (High Dynamic Range) video so you can enjoy 4K content at an astonishing resolution of 3840 x 2160
  • Supports HDCP 2.2 DRM copy protection, 4:4:4 pure colour sub-sampling, and BT.2020 pass-through, giving you peace of mind that you're covered for the future of 4K and 3D

Let me know what comes up? I'm very interested in how the colors look now. Most everything in HDR seemed to be washed out.

I saw absolutely no difference in HDR. The update was pretty lackluster.

After doing some more testing. There is some minor improvement. HDR doesn't look as washed out as it used to. Either way, I'm putting this in my room for tv/movie viewing. Gonna get a cheap 4k monitor and use that for the time being.

I only got this TV specially for the HDR and it's only been useful for one game, RE7 on PC. Other than that, it's just been a pain with the settings and trying to make ever game look good.

Thanks I'll have to check the spec properly. I may end up going hdmi from console directly to the tele and audio from the tele to receiver.

Cool, thanks.

That price seems like a steal, only problem is I don't have a TV stand big enough, nor the room lol.
I just bought a new tv stand for this tv (49" model) and it can fit on a really small stand. My stand says it's for only up to a 37" but since the tv has a center base stand it fits no problem. The actual screen hangs over a few inches on each side, which is actually ideal in my situation.

My 2 cents: I've had this tv for a month or 2 now and I LOVE it. Regular Blurays played thru the PS4 look amazing upscaled, can't wait to get a UHD player.
Also, my update popped up over WiFi 2 days ago, I like the small changes.

Got the repair scheduled for the HDMI 1 Input. Will have them take a look first see if anything is actually broken before they replace. Some random electronics repair shop locally which will have ordered the part which is what I am assuming will be the motherboard as the HDMI1 port is on the back fused to it. Won't risk them doing a repair unless absolutely needed, would rather keep it factory fresh.

43X800E review from rtings has finally arrived

X800D is much better TV. 43X800E uses IPS panel, and the contrast is TRASH-tier. Color gamut and volume are also bit downgraded, but panel can deliver a bit brighter image.

My current options are.... pay 860€ for 43XD8005 in a single store that offers it in my country [43" was pulled from stores in my region]... or wait for the end of the year for 49XE9005 to get cheaper, hopefully near 1000-1200€.

Just came to post the review too. IPS = very disappointed. Even the HDR brightness is only marginally better than last years model. And yup, the contrast level as you said is trash level. However, this means the better TV (43xd800) is still available for much, much cheaper than the xe800. Also, they have review the US model; there was a rumour that the UK 43" model had a VA panel but honestly even if it does I don't think it really changes much. It would be like £300+ extra for a tiny increase in brightness over the XD800.

lol good image

its surprising that the latest model is crap compared to the old one.

i guess its the move to ips thats messed it up.

luckily ive got a 43" va panel in my x800d. you should be able to get the old model cheaper now i guess.

or go for the x900 model which is great

Hmm. The difference in Horizon in particular seemed fairly marked, and I had just played it a few days before. I should have done a before-and-after, but I wasn't expecting much if anything from the new FW.

43" VA panel BTW. I can't speak to the larger sizes.

Edit: True shock at the 2017 43" equivalent (X800E) being such a...downgrade.

The 43" X800D feels like a fluke. I can't believe this cost me $649. Shame about EU models, but perhaps NA folks will be able to find one even cheaper with 2017s out there. I would definitely jump on it, the price to decency ratio is truly ridiculous.

Geez how does Sony release such stellar sets like the X900E, X930E and A1E and then absolutely shit the bed with the X800E. Thwre is no way the tv should have worse wide color gamut range, worse blacks, barely negligible improvement in brightness, input lag didn't improve etc. Wide angle viewing is such garbage for a small size tv, VA is always superior so don't know why they went IPS. Rtings always mentions it in their reviews as if people are viewing televisions from more than 40 degrees off center when they just aren't.

Safe to say the X800D will remain the king at 43" in 2017 as well. Get them on clearance if you don't have the set yet. And if you need 49", shell out the dough for the X900E 49" version.

Ordered a 43" XD800 and am picking up later. Was waiting for the XE review but as that one has seemingly shit the bed (and the XD is £350 cheaper), its made my mind up. Wanted to wait on it a bit longer but the number of retailers stocking the XD looks like is diminishing fast. If you're in the UK and want one then I suggest getting on it soon before its discontinued.

yeah, I'm gonna get the X900e Black Friday this year.

Got the 43" inch yesterday and its lovely. However, I have a question/observation. Does HDR only output in limited RGB range? I ask because I set up the TV, set enhanced HDMI on HDMI 2&3 and then used the PS4 options to set FULL range RGB and 2160 RGB. In picture options I changed HDMI3 to accept a FULL RGB signal.

Loading up my AVforums calibration disk, I calibrated the TV to full RGB range output and everything looked lovely.

Putting on my 1st HDR game - Ratchet & Clank - I instantly noticed everything looked washed out. Same with Uncharted 4. Funnily enough, getting a washed out picture is exactly what you get when a limited RGB signal is sent to an input that is expecting full RGB.

So, went back and set all options in the PS4 display to Auto and then set HDMI3 to Auto and recalibrated to Limited RGB and hey, everything is great.

Its like SDR content can be setup with full RGB fine but HDR has to be set up with Limited RGB. If you have had washed out HDR on this TV then this is why.

It's not really an issue to use Limited RGB and if I'm just repeating what has been already said somewhere in these last 72 pages then I'm sorry; I feel people need to be aware of this, or perhaps there is a way around it?

TL;DR Use limited RGB when calibrating this TV

Edit: This thread confirms it. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1310135

HDMI2.0 cannot output 4k60 4:4:4 RGB 10bit HDR

This tv really is amazing lol. The new FW made some super nice quality of life changes for me. Going to the sleep menu doesn't take up the whole screen and make you miss what you were watching anymore. The os actually feels really responsive this thing is a real beast as a computer monitor. That's my primary use and I just learned something amazing playing around in my nvidia control panel last night.

People always say to use GPU scaling but I tried display scaling with full screen and it was so much better I couldn't even believe it. Like instantly noticeable! If you play a lot of games that you can't run at 4k then you should definitely switch the scaling to display for improved IQ. I tried Arkham knight at 1440p It looked amazing.

Oh and like the guy above me mentioned. I changed my color format to ycbcr 444 instead of RGB and Mass Effect looked amazing with HDR. I guess I'll try RBG limited next time.

TLDR: scaling on this TV kicks GPU scaling ass.

Sony TV division is well known for having the best upscaling chips.

And fun fact, they don't use fancy upscaling tricks in 1080p120 mode in their higher-end TVs [like very good X900E]. The image is much more "raw" in this display mode.

It's pretty damn crazy man, I feel like I got a whole new TV again last night hahaha. I'm so happy I bought this thing and it was worth giving up my hacked 120hz korean monitor.

I'm thankful this thread turned up because this looks perfect for me, HDR10 and 4K without the >£1,000 price of other models. Looking at getting the 49 inch version (it's £30 more for 6 more inches) but before I do so:
- How does 720p and 900p content look on this? I'll be using my Switch on it quite a lot so this is kinda important.
- How's the sound? I haven't any desire to buy a soundbar nor am I picky over what it sounds like as long as it isn't atrocious.
EDIT: Wait, it doesn't have HDR10? I'm confused.

I had the exact same thing, thinking HDR was just bad. After looking a lot online, I found out that you have to set HDMI range to limited in the tv settings.
Enjoy ;-)

It is HDR 10. Bought the 49" few days ago and haven't tested the Switch yet.
Sound is terrible (but I've been using home cinema systems for years now, so I may be not 100% objective here). Really happy with it so far, HDR is a pain in the ass to set up with a PC though.

Ah, OK. I'll use it for a few weeks before deciding on a soundbar. Sounds like a pretty good TV for the price. Will most likely go for the 49 inch one seeing as it's bigger and has better viewing angles. Are there any settings I should know about other than enhanced HDMI mode and Game Mode?

The fact that this thread is 71 pages long and still going strong means this question might be really obvious:

So, is this TV worth it?

I had the 43" and thought it was good overall. But I did notice the HDR is a bit limited compared to more expensive TVs, some games the picture looked washed out at times, specifically in Uncharted 4 I noticed that. But it looked very impressive with Horizon zero dawn. I thought it was much better than the competing Samsung 43", the HDR is terrible, eurogamer even said not to use the HDR on those models

I liked that it had 4 HDMI outs.HDMI outputs 2 and 3 support HDR

The android OS was a bit slow and clumsy, and the remote is just OK, but it does have buttons for everything which I prefer to the mini touch pads that some come with these days.
