Metroid: Samus Returns (Mercury Steam, Metroid 2 reimagining, 9/15) announced for 3DS

Sweetness. It may not be good gameplay-wise so I'll restrain my joy until it's playable but it is great to see both a new 2D and 3D Metroid game in production. I do find this anti-3DS snobbery by Switch owners a bit funny, since it was the very snobbery that Vita owners had towards the 3DS which was rejected by Nintendo fans. Eh, people gonna people.

Not sure I agree with the 'it will sell better on 3DS' stuff.

Switch sales aren't exactly bad right? Imagine how a brand new (remade) Metroid game coming soon into launch would do on the console?

I think that would be a pretty damn big deal, could even work against it being on 3DS this late into it's run, would have sold much better a few years ago.

That assumes this developer could have gotten it on the Switch in a satisfactory form by 9/15. If it takes longer the Switch will have a developed well-rounded library plus a vastly smaller user base than the 3DS by the time it makes it. I imagine it'll be, or at least could easily be if necessary, ported at some point anyways.

anybody saying "wow this is going to be terrible because mercury steam" while they've been showing twenty minutes of good ass gameplay are garbage shitposters

Yeah like I get being skeptical for MercurySteam but fucking at least check out this footage. Despite not having the best graphics it looks like everything I could ask for a 2D Metroid.

If Nintendo are as hands-on with this game as they were whipping Next Level Games into shape for Luigi's Mansion 2, this has every possibility to be fucking great.

As bland as it looks, it certainly seems more interesting in the gameplay department than AM2R. They're finding new things to do with 2D Metroid, and the Metroid fights themselves especially seem better. It really would have been great if they had done a simultaneous release on Switch, but... it would still have these visuals. A higher resolution wouldn't fix this visual style. 3D probably does more favors for this than HD.

Not too thrilled to hear the Norfair/Magmoor Caverns theme again. Please don't let Kenji Yamamoto be wasted on a bunch of remixes that have already been remixed several times over...

Not just cause of the 3D, but the second screen map stuff too. DS/3DS was always the perfect Metroid machine, it woulda been so fucked up if the whole product family lived and died and never got a proper 2D Metroid. Absolutely better late than nothing.

Meh. I think it mostly looks fine, but some simply care more about graphics and artstyle than others so people that dislike it aren't necessarily shitposters. People just have different priorities and preferences.

Now this is a big surprise, and a good one! The 3DS needs more games, and if they weren't going to put a 3DS segment into the E3 Showcase it's great to see a major announcement soon afterwards. I'm not a huge Metroidvania genre fan but I do like some of them, including Super Metroid and the GBA Metroid games, and this looks like good stuff along those lines. A new 2d Metroid game would be nice, but this remake is great to see too. And versus the original for the GB, adding an ingame map is a huge improvement. I particularly like that they added pins you can place on the map at key points, that's a FANTASTIC idea for improving Metroidvania map design, I love it.

Now, yes, MercurySteam and Sakamoto both have very mixed records, but watching this footage of the game it looks good -- not incredible, perhaps, but definitely good -- and Nintendo often gets the best out of outside developers who work with them. The game looks good visually as well, good art design work here... and it has good classic Metroid music of course.

Will this be in 3D?

I was wondering that, but they mentioned on the stream that it looks better in 3d, so yes.

UNBELIEVABLE!!

For YEARS, a lot of you would bitch about the lack of Metroid at these events. Now we get not one but TWO Metroid announcements.

All I read is
"It's ugly"
"Looks easy"
"AM2R looks better"
"Eww, it's on 3DS"

Just....wow....

No one is obligated to be happy about a game that doesn't look good just because it says "Metroid" in the title.

This is gonna be real awkward after playing both the original and AM2R, the latter of which I'm very impressed with, but I'm on board. Hell yeah.

I think it looks great! The graphics will probably look much better on the handheld, like Zelda. I don't know why it's on 3DS though. I think it would sell much better on Switch TBH. 3DS is dying, no? I'm just worried the sales will be bad and we won't see another 2D Metroid for some time :P People are dying for games on Switch and random people would pick this up.

I'm picking this up, nonetheless. Sakamoto probably is just using Mercury Stream for man power. That's kinda what he did with Team Ninja. There doesn't seem to be interest at Nintendo to make Metroid, so he has to find other people to help him make it.

I feel I don't understand the 3DS/Switch situation.

You think Nintendo would want to subtly transfer everyone onto the Switch.
And yet they are still doing all this exclusive 3DS stuff.

Even if they just do quick ports for stuff that was already in development for the 3DS. You'd want to move people forwards, not backwards. You want everyone to buy the Switch.

I dunno. I don't get it.

The dumbest thing is people complaining about Other M vibes from things that weren't bad things about Other M. Samus being more agile is a good thing that should be carried over to other games.
Yea, that's one of the things that makes Other M fun to play. And actually really replayable imo.

Now that I thought about what Mercury Steam did kinda disappear for awhile didn't they and given Nintendo's better relationship with Konami, maybe they're taking them under their wing like Next Level Games.

These Treehouse boss fights wow for 3DS , backgrounds look really good , hope after u beat it u get hard mode or something.

It's interesting that they chose to do another remake rather than Metroid 5 or whatever. I wonder if this is almost like a test run with MS for a future 2D title down the road.

As someone who never really scratched the surface of Metroid 2: RoS on GB, I'm very much looking forward to this.

WHAT THE FUCK

How was this not on the Spotlight?! This is far more interesting than another Prime!

But also... Now I can't trade in my 3DS toward a Switch. God damn it.

AND ITS OUT Sept 15th this year. Holy shit

While I'm disappointed, I end up getting this because it's Metroid and it doesn't look that bad.

I'm hoping there's an option to keep the camera pulled back how it is during boss fights. It's a little too close during exploration.

Hey gang, isn't it great that we live in a world where we get both AM2R and this (and Metroid Prime 4)? If this helps in any way sell more people on more Metroid, I'm ok with it.

anybody saying "wow this is going to be terrible because mercury steam" while they've been showing twenty minutes of good ass gameplay are garbage shitposters

That's why Treehouse is so important, imo.
Nintendo games a lot of them shine through gameplay and not screenshots. Zelda BoTw was like that too.

Lots of people are salty today, Trust me.

not liking the stream now that I am seeing it, everything is too zoomed in, there's only ever one or two enemies on screen at once.. the jumping looks janky

looks like a mercury steam game all right.. not understanding the hype other than the fact that people are starved for a 2d metroid

the qol things are hit or miss, the map is nice, but the laser sight and it changing color and vibrating when you are actually aimed onto an enemy is gross. same w/ highlighting breakable blocks.. like what is the point of actually exploring when you are told where you can find 'hidden' paths?

Lots of people are salty today, Trust me.

yeah god forbid people express their opinions based on the developers' previous games and what they are showing... just because people are starved for 2d metroid doesn't mean they should accept whatever junk is offered up
