Metroid: Samus Returns (Mercury Steam, Metroid 2 reimagining, 9/15) announced for 3DS

seriously this game looks really good

I mean, if you have decided that "no 3DS game is ever anything but trash" at this point, that's kind of your problem

The updated Metroid fights look much more interesting. It's like they took some inspiration from the Prime trilogy boss battles.

I feel like I'm the only one who played AM2R and thought "this is an okay fan game that they put effort into," and then stopped halfway through because it was still clearly a rough fan game and didn't see why everyone was freaking out about it.

Pretty much. For a fan game, it's pretty good. But it's not some sort of magnum opus masterpiece. If Nintendo had released it themselves at retail and I had bought it, I probably would have been disappointed.

Well all one needs to do is watch the footage and see this is no Mirror of Fate. It's pretty Metroid faithful.

The worst things about Other M were the parts Nintendo insisted upon.

Sakamoto wanted Other M to play like this but Team Ninja insisted on making the game 3D.

I don't have any interest in this because metroidvanias don't really seem to be my thing (interesting in Prime games though. I've only played 1, but that reminded me of Zelda). Happy that Metroid fans who have yet to switch to switch will have a metroid game to play soon though.

Also, the developer is wearing a dope shirt. I want it.

Game has won me over. Lots of QoL improvements to the standard Metroid formula and the maps look nothing like Mirror of Fate.

Eww, Mercury Steam. They did what Team Ninja didn't quite succeed with and killed a classic, now they get another shot at it?

Other than that, the gameplay looks good. Melee counters are silly but the animations look just like Super Metroid. Just like Bloodstained, as long as the gameplay is right, the rest doesn't matter much.

I know a lot of people are down on the developer(rightfully so, imo) but this demo looks awesome. Has there been word on when this releases?

I have been playing AMR2 it's great but it's definitely not same league gameplay wise as Super Metroid or Fusion, being handed many of the powers right away is nice but there is a loss of wanting to discover new areas, also I am not sure why the version I played didn't let u switch to Dpad controls it's better for accuracy.

I'm actually fine with how it looks! Reminds me of Metroid Prime in GameCube. Glad I still have a 3DS XL to play this! The first time I will play 3DS in years!

Shame this didn't come out two years ago, this thread woulda been pure joy, less Switch sadness. Good game then is still good game now! Really lookin forward to playing this with the 3D maxed out, woulda been a real shame to have gone through the whole 3DS lifespan and never gotten a 2D Metroid usin stereo 3D, gonna look great. Prefer it on 3DS cause of that really.

I didn't like everything I saw in the trailer but the ongoing Treehouse gameplay has me sold. It's a more vibrant game than I'd like, but beside that it looks like a solid Metroid game.

The combat also looks more polished than in AM2R, even though the game looks noticeably easier. Encounter design in AM2R could get pretty fucked up and that resulted in a huge difficulty spike halfway through that game. I love its visuals and music but I'm down for a more polished remake

Looks great on the stream.

Mini bosses look fun and the combat looks nice with the analog aiming and a melee attack is a good addition.

I don't think people should be worried.

Nintendo/Sakamoto is overseeing the game (Sakamoto's resume with 2D Metroids are legit) and they are building on top of an existing game with new features, reworked bosses and reworked maps.

Teleport stations are actually a nice addition for backtracking. Map pins and a legend of map icons are nice as well.

I'm not too worried about Mercury Steam. I mean Next Level Games has a great track record with Nintendo but their Metroid game was horrible.

Did it get leaked anyway?

It got CDd after a 1.0 release. It was a known property for years before that. Nintendo clearly allowed it to be released but then did not want further development on it. It's about as gracious a gesture towards fans and the work as any such corporation could be expected to make given the circumstances.

Sigh... this looks like Mercury Steam B-Team that made Mirror of Fate. Not that their A-Team is incredible, but the main LoS games had really good art direction. The art in this game does not look too hot...

The pacing seems amazing in this game O_O

I know Mercury Steam has been bad in the past, but seriously, guys, this looks great.

FYI: Some people have said EAD is making MP4, others say it's Retro, others say it's Next Level Games...

anybody saying "wow this is going to be terrible because mercury steam" while they've been showing twenty minutes of good ass gameplay are garbage shitposters

This is looking really good! Mercury Steam didn't instill me with confidence, but it looks great and knowing the original level design is mostly intact mostly puts me at ease.

I would like this on the Switch, but I assume Mercury Steam has been working on it for a while.
