Metroid: Samus Returns (Mercury Steam, Metroid 2 reimagining, 9/15) announced for 3DS

For anyone claiming to be big Metroid fans and claiming this game looks awful turn in your Fan card.

If this sells well we will get more Metroid on 3DS/Switch. If not Nintendo will just say see no one wants to buy Metroid and we will shelve it for another decade.

I feel I don't understand the 3DS/Switch situation.

You think Nintendo would want to subtly transfer everyone onto the Switch.
And yet they are still doing all this exclusive 3DS stuff.

Even if they just do quick ports for stuff that was already in development for the 3DS. You'd want to move people forwards, not backwards. You want everyone to buy the Switch.

I dunno. I don't get it.

Switch is replacing Wii U, not 3DS.

At least that is still the case, judging by all the games the 3DS keeps getting.

While I'm disappointed, I end up getting this because it's Metroid and it doesn't look that bad.

I'm hoping there's an option to keep the camera pulled back how it is during boss fights. It's a little too close during exploration.
Well it is a Metroid 2 remake. :-P

It's interesting that they chose to do another remake rather than Metroid 5 or whatever. I wonder if this is almost like a test run with MS for a future 2D title down the road.

That would be great. Nintendo needs more European development studios and more development partners in general.

The boss battle currently on Treehouse Live is fantastic. Those counter crits, dragging it down with the grapple beam and blasting the fuck out of it with missiles, HNNNG!

It's great that we're finally getting a new sidescroller Metroid (although it's a remake), but come on, why did they develop it for the 3DS and not as a download-only for the Switch?
The user base of the 3DS is much bigger sure. Nevertheless they should let the 3DS go. :/

WWWWHAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTT??????????????

Now the 3DS is almost the perfect 2D Metroid system. They need to get Zero Mission on there (I have Fusion from the Ambassador's Program).

Go back to gaf prior to the Switch launch when it was mostly "lol nintendoomed". Very few expected it to do as well as it has done.

Makes perfect sense that Nintendo would have a bunch of games in development for a successful system (3DS) while they wait to see how the successor to their failed Wii U performs.

If we still get a bunch of 3DS game announcements in 2018, i'll be pissed, but this is just a conservative company continuing to be conservative.

2,5D will never touch sprites or whatever UbiArt/Vanillaware does, but it looks as good as it can with these requirements.

While I admit it looks a bit visually underwhelming, the gameplay looks fucking awesome, super pumped for this!

The 3DS has a huge installed base compared to the just released Switch. Development for 3DS also requires less resources, this game is out soon and would no doubt take a lot longer if they had to build it for Switch as well with higher quality assets.

It's really not complicated to grasp.

This game will look fantastic on a 3DS screen in stereoscopic 3D. The colors are so vibrant. The environments have a layered, sculpted look to them. And the animations, and dynamic camera transitions... This is on point. THIS GAME.

not liking the stream now that I am seeing it, everything is too zoomed in, there's only ever one or two enemies on screen at once.. the jumping looks janky

looks like a mercury steam game all right.. not understanding the hype other than the fact that people are starved for a 2d metroid

the qol things are hit or miss, the map is nice, but the laser sight and it changing color and vibrating when you are actually aimed onto an enemy is gross. same w/ highlighting breakable blocks.. like what is the point of actually exploring when you are told where you can find 'hidden' paths?

yeah god forbid people express their opinions based on the developers previous games and what they are showing... just because people are starved for 2d metroid doesn't mean they should accept whatever junk is offered up

If MercurySteam learned anything by their work on Castlevania, there should be an option to turn off the handholding lights.

I dunno if it's better but it's definitely a league of it's own as a fangame.

AM2R is a remake but this new 3DS game is more like a reimagining.

I think AM2R is a great fanmade game, but it has a series of horrible design choices that i wouldn't forgive if it was made by a professional team. This game on the other side looks like a fantastic reimagining that can be much better than the original played today.

No, thats nonsense. I'm not buying a game I played a very good fan remake for last year for the vague hope that they'll make one that doesn't use crappy 3d models down the line.

3DS games are cheap to make. Same reason we got the Fire Emblem remake recently. The 3DS is a nice cheap way to lad out the schedule before Switch really takes over.
