Metroid: Samus Returns Impressions: "I didn't want to stop playing."

well shit, I just bought a Switch last month :(
don't worry, you've got 3 months to save up for this
I'm almost distraught that this isn't on Switch. Not only did I sell my 3DS already, but I just don't have much of a stomach for 3DS graphic quality and resolution anymore.
oh no
I am going to apologize beforehand but I am no longer buying anything else for the 3DS, as great as this game seems I will not be playing it.

thanks for letting us know i guess

I can get people being discouraged by the developer behind (yes, good impressions and all) or performance, I guess, I mean, no one is forced to spend money on stuff that doesn't convince them, regardless of the franchise needing all support it can get... But 3DS owners who are simply passing on this because they'd rather have it on Switch are certainly something else lol.

I want it just because it's Metroid and waiting for Prime 4 will kill me

But I ain't buying a 3Ds again, shame :(

I'm wondering if we could somehow set up a GAF daisy chain of sorts, where we all pitch in and buy a new 3DS and metroid and then pass it around. No idea how we'd get that to work, but I'm thinking about it.

GAFer: "I'm going to send a clear message to Nintendo that we only want games on Switch!"
Nintendo: "People don't want Metroid games."

It's not like stereoscopic 3D offers something Switch can't do or anything /s

Well, hopefully you never have to suffer through Super Metroid or Metroid Prime again.

I used to be a 3DS owner but I sold mine to help pay for the Switch. I never saw this coming. I would love it on the Switch of course. It's hard to justify buying another 3DS for one game. I really wish they had at least made this a dual 3DS/Switch release.

My problem has never been the developer, unlike most. Regardless, the game looks great.

It's for the wrong the system for my liking. Rather play it on the Switch.

But hey, with Hey Pikmin also being a 3DS exclusive, Nintendo is determine for my New XL not to collect too much dust.

If it turns out good then obviously I'm going to get it, 3DS or not.

Hell my threshold for 'good' will be a lot lower than normal because I've been keen for a new Metroid game for so long.

With that said...hearing it was being developed by MercurySteam was a cause for concern, and it's kind of annoying that some people seem so against anyone voicing that completely reasonable opinion. Echo chambers of positivity are terrible.

anyone who doesn't buy this for whatever reason loses their rights to complain about Metroid being sent out to pasture in the future. Yeah I know, old system. Meh dev. Money is tight. All valid reasons for not buying it....but just know if in the future Metroid is dead, the first question asked of you will be "did you buy MSR tho?" if the answer is no....you gotta shut up. I've bought ps3 games when the ps4 was out all to support the brand/franchise

/jk but only a little bit

Wouldn't go as far as to say it's an echo chamber for positivity.

Most people just change their tone once they see the 30+ minutes of gameplay they've released so far.

I really don't understand people. I'd buy this game on freaking Game Boy Color if it looked fun, but I guess that's just me.

You know what? I'm one of those people that gave Gamefreak shit for not releasing UM/US on Switch.

But I will gladly buy this Metroid game for the 3DS. I don't care. I just finally want to play a good Metroid again!

I mean, you needed to sell yours to get a Switch and obviously no longer own the target platform so you don't really apply to this. That's an unfortunate situation and if I were you I'm not sure I'd buy another 3DS just for this.

In my case I don't sell my systems unless I hate them so I'm stuck with my 3DS and no Switch for the time being haha. Drooling over all the great stuff the Switch is getting, but incredibly happy that I'm getting this (along with some Atlus goodness soon).

Hopefully this does relatively well according to Ninty's expectations and they make Metroid 5 for Switch. I really, really hope we can keep getting 2D entries along with Prime and whatever is next for the series.

I'm eager to play this game either in 3ds or the Switch (preferably).

It really surprises me how a lot of users just can't stand to play a 3ds game anymore lol, can't imagine how much of a struggle it would be for them to play something from the nes era.

I wish it was 2d and sprite based, even if it reused some sprites from Zero Mission or Fusion, I think this looks really ugly.

But I'll still play it.

A shame this is only coming to the 3DS. Might have to dust mine out for it.

Can't wait until I get a switch (which will be this year or maybe later) 3DS is my go to portable gaming system
I still have a few 3DS purchases to get and this is one of them.

Guys. The more I watch this, the more I want it. I think I'm just going to buy all of this Nintendo stuff so I can play all of the Metroid.

As for the visuals and fps, I do not care.

Wait:
"the ability to to scan the environment will hopefully help reduce those moments where you are exploring aimlessly without clear direction."
Any footage of the scanning?

Positive impressions aside, I remain skeptical given Mercury Steam's abysmal attempt at a Metroid-like game with Mirror of Fate. I hope i'm wrong but from what i've seen so far, I doubt this will be on par with Zero Mission as the gold standard for all remakes to adhere to.

As an aside, I do hope the original Metroid II is an unlockable (color palette included) like Metroid 1 was in Zero Mission.

Well, let's do some mental gymnastics, shall we?

You had a 3DS, but you sold it to pay for a Switch. Therefore if you bought a new 3DS for this game you would only be undoing that, therefore you wouldn't be paying the whole price for a new 3DS, just the difference between your trade-in and the price of the new one. And you can always get a used one for pretty cheap (pre-owned 2DS runs $75 at Gamestop).

I have not much fate on the dev team, but Nintendo's consulting has ascended mediocre devs to greatness before so I guess it can happen here as well.

Sad about the platform choice especially when I heard it's 30fps, goddamn that's brutal.

To be fair, this is just a single person's opinion. I would love for this game to succeed, though. Having a great developer in Spain helps everyone in the end.

Is 60fps a tradition for Metroid games?
It's a tradition for 2d games.

Well, there goes my interest in this game. Fuck any sort of detective vision in my Metroid games thank you very much. Hope it doesn't make its way into Prime 4.

After seeing this game there is no excuse for it to not run in 60fps on a New 3DS. So here's hoping it will.

Regardless, I can deal with 30fps. I played through Blaster Master Zero on 3DS and it was fine.

After some videos I think I can accept those visuals but the level design doesn't look very interesting. Compare it to Zero Mission, where almost every square had a secret, and you can see how simple this looks. The fact that there are teleports is also a bad indication.
But maybe I'm just wrong.

It's just fucking ridiculous of Nintendo to bang on about how the point of the Switch is to consolidate their handheld and home console software into one platform.

They said it over and over, and specifically said that's why they made the Switch. That's why I got it, the promise of one piece of hardware that would allow me to play all the new games, for the home and the handheld.

I used to think Sony and MS were deceptive, but that's nothing compared to Nintendo. Nintendo will just lie to your face, say absolute bullshit, and never follow through. They don't respect or care about their fans one bit. They really really don't. Pity I enjoy their games so much, because I really don't want to give Nintendo anymore money.

a 2ds is $80

and has an unimaginably large, awesome library of games

do yourself a favor and get one, play this, and then go play the other billion awesome games you've missed out on

I sold off all my n3ds stuff to help cover the switch costs, not going back that route sadly.

I'm happy for everyone that can play it though, it looks amazing!

some on gaf think when a new platform comes out you should abandon the wide install base asap

Seems like Nintendo wasn't fully confident with the Switch given how the Wii U did (which is justifiable thinking), so they continued 3DS development just in case. It's a smart move if that was indeed the case, but of course some gaf members sold their 3DS immediately and are mad that the 3DS install base didn't follow suit.

That sort of thing doesn't happen overnight. It's a gradual process that takes time, especially with a $300 price tag. And not only that, but the system isn't even half a year old!

Maybe, just maybe Mercury Steam can pull a Capcom ala Super Steet Fighter 4 and allow an option screen toggle to disable 3D completely and double the framerate. It's not necessarily a deal breaker, but considering every Metroid has indeed run at 60fps (save for Ofher M dropping in rather chaotic moments and Galactic Federation being 30fps on OG 3DS) it would be nice to have the option. I'm not holding my breath, though.

From my reply on the other thread:

They never said that. Show me a quote from Iwata or Kimishima that says this. All Iwata said was that they are creating a unified system and architecture such that "home consoles and handheld devices will no longer be completely different, and they will become like brothers in a family of systems." The idea was to make it so that porting and transitioning between devices will be easier. He never said that their software lineups will be consolidated into one platform. That's you misunderstanding what he said.

The prime games are games about scanning shit.
Like they might as well be called Samus Scanning Some Space Pirate Bullshit Prime

lol, its optional. Dont fly off the handle just yet

Same here. I already smashed my 3ds with a hammer. I'm not going to use it ever again. I'm sure it will still sell well, but the big 2017-2018 3ds games should really get ported to Switch.

Damn it Mercury Steam!! Why did you have to announce this?

Last night the hype didn't let me sleep!!

I cannot wait for September guys!!

I think I will play AM2R again this weekend.
