Metroid: Samus Returns Impressions: "I didn't want to stop playing."

Neogaf: we want a 2d metriod!

Nintendo announced 2d metroid.

Neogaf: fuck that.

Never change.

I don't even get what lulz you're reaching for here. Yeah, I'd love a 2D Metroid (or 3D, don't really care, just want more Metroid). But, I simply didn't think this looked good. I mean, I love Batman. Batman is my favorite thing. I want more Batman movies. Batman V Superman fucking sucked. My wanting a thing doesn't mean I'll love every version they give me. That's not some GAF thing.

Except looking at the game and impressions it looks really good?

And that's great to hear. Gives me hope (the impressions part). Doesn't change that I thought it looked not great, but things change when it's in your hand. People need to stop being so sensitive about any criticism or differing opinions. Not everyone who disagrees with your opinion is just looking to be a contrarian or a hater. Sometimes they are just honest opinions.

All their game looked really good until we played them haha. Their 3DS Castlevania played like ass.

I thought it played fine. I had no problems with the controls and thought they did a good job of transferring the Lords of Shadow combat into the 2D gameplay.

The game itself, well, I guess say what you will about that. It was a solid 7 for me and not some piece of trash. I thought it had really good exploration, combat and music.

Story was pretty decent too. I actually think it's probably a better game than Lords of Shadow 2 lol

Anyway I don't think it really matters. It's a new project being (I assume) overlooked by Nintendo, so I'm confident that it will turn out much better.

I wonder when they port it to the switch at some point there will be a performance gain to 60FPS then. Would be used a major selling point. Now in 60fps and higher resolution.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. There haven't been any non-indies that have gone from 3ds to switch and that's unlikely to change.

I'm almost distraught that this isn't on Switch. Not only did I sell my 3DS already, but I just don't have much of a stomach for 3DS graphic quality and resolution anymore.

The game looks sweet. I love the chance of a modern take on the classic Super Metroid formula- I just hope it is going to go interesting places and not retread old ground.

If the response is strong, they may end up porting it. Who knows. They ported WiiU games to the 3DS, why the hell not do the reverse?

Not interested in playing a 2D Metroid game that runs at only 30 fps. Sorry Mercury Steam.

A locked framerate on non-PC hardware is something to praise MercurySteam for, seeing as their three Castlevania games didn't accomplish this...

In my opinion this looks too low-fi for a Switch port. They would be better off remaking something else, like Super Metroid from scratch.

For the 3DS I think this looks great and Im rooting for MS, the Spanish gamedev scene really needs it

Watched the trailer on my 3ds, it looks like locked 30, so it's really smooth and cinematic looking. I think even regardless of the quality of this, if you're a Metroid fan you NEED to buy it. Nintendo has to see that there is a fanbase for these games, the message has to be sent. If you don't buy this game you'll only be hurting yourself.

game looked great

i'll buy it just because it looks fun, entirely aside from any considerations of keeping the franchise going

Also, people, there are still way more 3DS owners than Switch owners. They aren't just going to stop making games for it immediately when there's money to be made.

I enjoyed Mirror of Fate as well. Wish I could play this Metroid. I really didn't expect this game I would have kept my 3DS XL

No sprites in favor of muddy 'realistic' looking 3DS graphics makes it quite a turnoff for me. I'd rather play AM2R.

After ALBW I know this game will look gorgeous playing it in person. I'd have preferred sprites but I appreciate what they are doing with the 2.5D style and ALBW (and the NSMB series) really showed me that Nintendo prefers these 2.5D games to sprite-based ones at this point in time.

I think the game looks ridiculously fluid to play. It's my game of the show. I can't wait to get my hands on it

The graphics looks so bad though...

The gameplay seems ok, I'm not too sure about the counter. But it looks like it'll give plenty off new things to keep Metroid 2 interesting...

Not getting it anyway.

The 3D trailer on the eShop looks pretty nice. Obviously not gonna suddenly look HD or anything, but certainly more attractive than watching it on a computer monitor or phone screen.

I worry this game might underperform by being released so late into the 3DS' lifespan and months after the newer, popular and very successful other handheld Nintendo system and chalk low sales to the Metroid brand thus stopping any more 2D Metroid from being made.

I hope it does well but I think making this game a 3DS exclusive is a mistake.

I don't think sales expectations are going to be that high. It's a 2D Metroid essentially, and a remake at that, and it doesn't look terribly high budget. I think it will do fine, i.e. better than Federation Force. I think the real question is whether Prime 4 will live up to Nintendo's expectations because that's going to be the main product.

I turned my 3DS on after months just to watcg this trailer lol.

I swore I was done with 3DS but Metroid pulls me back in.

Is 60fps a tradition for Metroid games?
Sort of, the 2D games basically were by default while the console 3D entries reliably were. But then this isn't a console title (though I guess they could always update for Switch later... but that doesn't seem to be Nintendo's thing.)

I considered it an inevitable sacrifice for being on 3DS myself, and from a third party developer at that.

This is our chance to save Metroid like we did Fire Emblem. Everyone who begged for a new Metroid better buy it.
It's even coming very close to my birthday. This game was made for me!
Ignoring that a lot of stuff I want is coming out in that period.

This. But this thread kinda shows people find excuses not to buy and play this while keep complaining about not getting a proper 2D Metroid of complaining it's 30FPS, lol.

I am going to apologize beforehand but I am no longer buying anything else for the 3DS, as great as this game seems I will not be playing it.

We wait this long and the platform - one you already seem to own, no less - is what keeps you from buying a new 2D Metroid?

Really?

I mean, I want Nintendo to use the Switch as their future as much as anyone else, but the games/legs aren't there just yet. Within the next year or so, but not yet.

I'm getting this one Day 1.

My N3DS is always on its charging dock, since I've been using it regiously every day since I got it. And before it, it was a 3DS XL. And before that one, an OG 3DS. And on July 28th, I'm getting a 2D. So, yeah, the 3DS family of systems gets a lot of mileage in my house!

I really liked Lords of Shadow 1. MercurySteam is a good developer that has been severely limited by a terrible management. Eric Álvarez was terrible for the company during the development of LoS 1 and 2. He's still there, but he hasn't tweeted anything about Metroid, so hopefully Nintendo has taken a more hands-on approach with the game.

As for AM2R... I downloaded it before it was taken down, but I never got to playing it. I think there's room in this world for a more straight remake of Metroid II (AM2R) and a reimagining of the same game on a completely different system (M:SR). There's barely any overlap between the two.

Suit yourself, but I'll never get this attitude. It's not like the 3DS won't work anymore in a few months. If you really need the push to justify getting a game for 3DS in 2017, think about getting games for it as "retro collecting" :/

I don't know. I think it's stupid to limit your options and not enjoy a game you may like because you arbitrarily decided that buying games for 3DS in 2017 is somehow wrong.

Posts like that just reek of sour grapes. As gamers we should happy when we can get games we want at all. Being THIS picky about it because of the platform choice is incredibly petty, but hey more power to them -- it's their choice as a consumer. Deliberately missing out on games that appeal to you (on a platform you own) because they're not on your main platform of choice is something I will never understand.

Don't get what's so wrong with 3DS...still play the guy all the time...

Plus, I think the game looked pretty good, outside some overlong counter sequences (imo).

They seemed to put a lot of emphasis on the counter... I hope it's not ripe for abuse.

Like it's so OP that you just wait to use it and then open up the "belly" of the enemy and shoot at the weak spot.

My problem with the counter is that a lot of the footage had the camera so close that functionally by the time you could actually see an enemy on your screen, you'd have to use the counter because there's no other option to avoid damage.

Odd decision because they could clearly move the camera further away for boss fights...
