Metroid: Samus Returns Impressions: "I didn't want to stop playing."

Are people saying they don't like it just because of the way it looks or because it's Mercury Steam? 30 FPS? All of those things sound incredibly petty.

These are aspects of previous Metroid games that have been present and/or of a high standard, it's not unreasonable to be disappointed at the lack of them in a new entry. A big part of the reason I love Prime 1 is its fluidity and appealing aesthetic, same for many of the 2D entries.

GAF: we want a metroid

Nintendo: we got just the things.

GAF: 30 fps? Mercury steam, 3DS?? Wtf no deal

Nintendo: ...............

Seriously, this thread has opened my eyes to why Nintendo doesn't want to deal with Metroid. It's the entitled fanbase.

her shoulders look way too small in game. very odd looking.
You're likely looking at the Power Suit

Her Varia suit looks fine.

If anything, those shoulders might be too big

My experience with the Metroid fanbase have driven me to deny my absolute love for this series in public. I'd be too ashamed to be associated with them (same goes for Silent Hill and Zelda tbh)

Fusion is one of my favorite games ever and the internet would have me believe it's a shit game because it doesn't force you to backtrack or whatever.

That was never how that was going to work, for the millionth time. Why would you get rid of your 3DS? Switch is a console.

Why do people keep pushing this when they literally just announced a mainline Pokemon game for Switch?

The 3DS obviously isn't dead yet, but it will be by 2018-2019.

I'm buying a 3ds just to play this game, I've waited so long for a new "proper" entry into my favorite series!

I don't understand some of the negativity. Even if the game isn't EXACTLY what a fan wanted, it's far better than something like federation force or nothing at all. I think it looks fantastic.

Nothing has been dumber by the stupid discussion of whether the Switch is a console or handheld. Who gives a fuck? It's the successor to the Wii U and 3DS. It's Nintendo's next console and handheld. It doesn't matter.

I was in "give it a shot" mode after the trailer but after seeing gameplay I'm in pre order mode. Also gimme those amiibos.

Some of these complaints are silly:

"30fps??? No buy"
"lol, Mercury Steam"
"Why the fuck is this not on the Switch???"

Man, from what I've been seeing from the Treehouse Live videos and such, I think the game looks great. Y'all should be thankful that we're getting Metroid at all. Yesterday morning, several folks swore to high heaven that there would be ZERO Metroid announcements and, yet, here we are. Glorious time to be a Metroid fan.

Game looked amazing on the stream, the only thing that will keep me from buying it would be if it's full of dialog/cutscenes, I hate those things in a Metroid game.

Pretty sure AMR2 died because Nintendo protects their IP, I keep seeing this sentiment that this game killed that fan remake. The thing that killed that fan remake was the fact that it's an unlicensed fan remake of a Nintendo property.

On the flip side of that, AM2R was in development for 10 years, was known about, had updates from the guys that made it, and wasn't killed until a few days after it released. It's not like it wasn't a well know project that just showed up on Aug 16 out of the blue.

Nintendo could have shut that game down at point in time from 2006 to the day it released.

It seems there's some Metroid "fans" that would rather no new games ever come out so they can jerk off to their memories of previous games forever.

This looks awesome, great timing too. I plan to play through Zero Mission and my copy of the Prime Trilogy/Hunters with Prime 4 now in development. I've also had Super Metroid and Fusion sitting on my Wii U for a while. Hell, I might even finish Other M...

I think this looks quality and that's why I'm gutted its not on the Switch :(

Hopefully we'll see it eventually. Just don't want it to be VC style with both screens jammed on the Switch screen. I'd like it optimised!

"Dishonoring the legacy" or something. Which is dumb. And this is coming from someone that's not interested in Fed. Force.

I'm getting this, and I'm getting Prime 4 provided it plays like OG Prime. I hope that this kicks off more development for Metroid games. GBA gave us Fusion and Zero Mission, so maybe there'll be a little more before the 3DS retires.

Yeah, the Switch is the next Nintendo Console and Handheld. Are people expecting the 3DS to stay relevant for another five years, or another Handheld to be announced? Let's face it, the Switch is the future for Nintendo. I honestly think that Nintendo thought the Switch could be a failure like Wii U, and approved some of these 3DS exclusive projects prior to it's success. That way, if Switch was a bomba, they could keep the 3DS going a bit longer while they worked on a Switch replacement. It's the only thing that makes sense to me at this point. Otherwise, they're just cannibalizing their main, current platform, and I really don't think they're that stupid.

At any rate, I don't expect this to continue much longer. Nintendo has always developed this narrative that their newest handheld won't replace the old, but that's just how it works, and it's how it should be. Technology should always be allowed to advance so that games can advance with it. It's a shame Metroid had to be a victim of all this, though.

Yes actually.

Hell, I think Federation Force is the only 30fps entry to date, which honestly was the biggest deal breaker for me with that game. Shame as despite that I actually quite liked Blast Ball, I'd honestly like to see it back as an extra mode in Prime 4 :P
