Metroid: Samus Returns Impressions: "I didn't want to stop playing."

Kind of wish I hadn't played AMR2 now. But damn the 3/2DS is really showing it's age now. Looks horrible.

Nearly all 3DS games look horrible in YouTube videos / screenshots, usually down to the resolution. They actually look a lot nicer running on the device.

Like, Federation Force doesn't actually look like complete shit when actually running on the 3DS. In fact, it can look pretty impressive sometimes D;

It is possible to be critical of things you're still happy about et al. I'm ecstatic we're finally getting a sidescrolling Metroid again, but I am gutted it is through low res 3DS visuals in 30fps...I'll likely still get it, but I'm doubtful I'll enjoy it as much as AM2R, given how much better that looked + performed. Will be interesting to compare the design of the two, both seem pretty daring in trying new things with the original game.

If nothing else, Metroidvanias are great on dual screens for obvious reasons, so at least it has that benefit on 3DS.

I'm very much looking forward to this. I don't care for the first two Metroid games and I don't love Super to the same degree that it's evangelists do, but Zero Mission is, to my tastes, a perfect game and I'm hoping for a similar transformation with this reimagining. It just looks fun.

Maybe I'll see if I can find a way to get that fan remake sometime too.

And I would love it if they produced some Metroid plushies or hats to promote the game.

WTH!!!
Baby-Scan-Mode which reveals everything.
Keep your Baby Metroid from the end, Nintendo.
I for one, am not gonna play this game with Scanner or Map.
I'll duct-tape my lower screen for the whole Old School experience!
Also, No switch, No BUY!!!!!1111ElevenElfundici

I'm so stoked, time to undust the good ol' 3DS

Good to know. Definitely looked fun to me from the Treehouse stream, so it's cool to hear impressions suggesting the same. Definitely going to keep my eye on this.

The game looks fantastic.

And I still can't get over how badass the boxart is.

Gonna buy the crap out of the amiibo 2-pack for the game too.

I remember being shock at how good A Link Between Worlds looked and felt. That thing running in your hands at 60 fps, in 3D or not, was actually pretty good looking. Trailers made it look ugly and outdated IMO.

This is what worries me, I put my 3DS to rest months before the Switch launch. The world is begging for Switch games and Nintendo keeps cock blocking their new system with awesome 3DS games, they could at least make simultaneous releases so people who already uphraded can enjoy all these games on Switch.

Here's the thing, since the Switch launched my 3DS has seen limited usage. But I would never get rid of it. Hell, Nintendo has said repeatedly that the 3DS wasn't going anywhere anytime soon. They even announced a new member of the family that hasn't even launched yet. So my question is this, why would they launch a new version of a console and not release games for it?

Because they've been struggling with split resources for years, and they should relish the opportunity to re-focus on a unified platform.

these [3DS] games have been in development, most likely, before the Switch was ready. I expect 3DS software to start drying up next year, as far as I know there isn't much or any coming out in 2018.

I totally agree...same for Metroid: Samus Returns. It is going to be great!

Don't expect any more Metroid games after Prime 4; that is, if it doesn't get cancelled due a lack of fan support.

Thankfully it seems mostly a few detractors on GAF are complaining. Viewership count and like/dislike ratio on youtube are looking very good. Completely different from Fed Force, which was *showered* with hate from all sides and drowned in dislikes.

Watching the treehouse stream has me pretty excited for this.
Samus's animations are really well done. I like the 360 aiming. The parry mechanic looks like a great addition as well.

And those amiibos are sexy af.
I'm loading up the video on the 3ds eshop right now to see how it will actually look in 3D.

Edit: did she lie to me on the treehouse stream? The video isn't in 3d on the eshop. It's the same video. Which is weird seeing a video set in a 3ds frame, playing on a 3ds

I just noticed those weird exhaust port looking things on the varia suit shoulders, looks a bit weird. The shoulders look bigger than they normally do as well to me.

The visor is throwing me off as well, it's ALOT slimmer than it usually is.

I was annoyed it wasn't a Switch game initially, but a day later it seems I got over it pretty quickly.

Now my feels just tell me I'm just really happy there are new Metroid game(s!) coming out, finally! And one is here pretty damn soon.

And it has such beautiful Amiibos coming with it. I'm pretty excited. :)

My reaction history:

- OMFG 2D METROID THANK YOU
-> Mercury Steam? 3DS? Polygon graphics? >:(
--> *watching treehouse gameplay* SOLD!

I wonder if the detractors have watched the treehouse gameplay, because it looks amazing. It's 2d metroid finally! Are people saying they don't like it just because of the way it looks or because it's Mercury Steam? 30 FPS? All of those things sound incredibly petty.

This is what you asked for. Nintendo listened and is giving it to you. It may not look exactly like the old 2d games but it sure plays like them. If you don't buy now, Metroid will probably be dead for years.

Yes, Castlevania mirror of fate is shit. This is not the same game. Watch the treehouse gameplay video.

Has Nintendo actually said why this is coming out on 3ds and not as a digital switch game yet? It's really baffling.

I understand the trepidation from people when they "first" look at this game. Takes a sec to get what the game is doing with its visuals but I expect Metroid fans on GAF to give this more than a passing glance. When you do that, when you invest 3-5mins of time in the demo, you see the glory of the game. If I had my druthers, I would have asked for sprite work as well but what we have is looking GLORIOUS

I HAVE WAITED SO VERY LONG FOR THIS MOMENT!

There were some comments from a poster earlier(in this or the other thread) that this game had been in development hell for a while, so that might explain why.

Why the fuck is this not coming out on switch?

A lot of folks ditched their 3ds for the switch (myself included), and we don't get a fucking 2d Metroid?

They are really trying to make me buy a 3ds for like the 3rd time huh.

That was never how that was going to work, for the millionth time. Why would you get rid of your 3DS? Switch is a console.

This game has been in development for ages. I remember the rumours about it years ago. Seems likely that it was too far along to simply dump it and remake it for the Switch.

I'm happy it's coming to 3DS, I don't have a Switch yet, so it should save me a little money in the long run.

Pretty much. There was leaks in 2015 that Mercury Steam were working on a Metroid game, but nearly everyone discounted it. Looks like those were true, which would suggest that this has been in development for over two years.
