Metroid: Samus Returns Impressions: "I didn't want to stop playing."

I get that vibe from the posts insulting and dismissing anyone who has merely stated legitimate criticisms :) Especially as the former outweighs the latter significantly in this thread, and generally takes on a far more hostile tone.
For real, it's nuts how tense some of these fans are.

Glad to know that Samus's literal return is getting well received. Hopefully the wait won't feel too long since it does have a Sept. 15 release date. Three months from now.
The fact that a new Metroid is being released before Odyssey is nuts to me.

I haven't really played Metroid 2, so question. Do we know if this has a completely redone (and hopefully open-ended) map or are they sticking to the level design of the original?

EDIT: Welp answered as I was typing by QuixoticNeutral above. Thanks bunches.

Would this be a good place to start playing Metroid games

Or should I play Super Metroid first (I believe it is on sale on one of the VCs)

Man, I finally got around to watching the Treehouse preview of this and it was almost emotional seeing a real metroid game after more than a decade of wilderness years.

It looks really, really good (so far as a 3ds game can in 2017), is based on a great game that deserved a sequel, and is a clever use of 3rd party resources. All I can hope now is that the game reviews and sells well so that Nintendo get the message that this is what Metroid is supposed to be.

I never preorder, but I'll preorder this one to send a message, however small.

Super Metroid is always a great place to start, but I reckon this one wouldn't be bad either - it may actually be more beginner friendly and the ending of this remake leads into the very start of Super Metroid. You'll have options now.

Get Super Metroid first, especially if you have a n3DS and can get it for less than $6. It's an excellent game and laid down the foundation for the genre, helping spawn great games like Cave Story, Ori and the Blind Forest, Axiom Verge, and even Dark Souls. If you like it, you'll likely really enjoy this :)

2D Metroids games are all pretty similar, but satisfying in their own way. If you like one, you'll likely enjoy the others.

I would probably go for Super Metroid. It's cheap, available now, and widely considered the best "metroidvania" style game. I'm actually playing through it right now for the first time thanks to the sale and aside from some control clunkiness, the game holds up extremely well.

I say play the Metroid Remake which I think was DS (?). Then Super. Then Fusion.

Then all the Primes. (which I hope come to Switch soon)

i saw this on the treehouse yesterday and it looked amazing. i was worried initially but it ended up looking great on the stream. i really like the use of the melee counter, and the fleshed out environments look dope. its great to get an official remake of this game. it's been sorely needed.

i also appreciate some of the design changes that will make this game more accessible to new players. i probably won't be using some of those features that much but it's cool that they are there for others to use. the fast travel terminals are a good idea.

there are more ppl complaining about metroid fans than metroid fans complaining, but thats how it always is in these threads huh

You could always start with Zero Mission or Fusion on Wii U VC. They're both more modern and will play closer to what SR will play like.

I love Super Metroid, don't get me wrong! Fusion just had a better control scheme

The GBA Metroids have a much more limited control scheme, because of GBA controls. You can say the control scheme is more accessible, but it's only more accessible because you have less control over Samus in the GBA games than you do in Super Metroid.

I consider myself a Metroid fan (though after reading this thread, I should probably distance myself from the rest of them). It's not gorgeous, but I think it looks really fun. The Treehouse gameplay demo looked way better than the trailer.

Well, I'm just working from the Treehouse demo, and my analysis may be wrong. But so far, this is what I've discerned:

- The 40-Metroid structure is back, with a progressive series of Metroid-based hard locks between zones
- A teleport system has been introduced to expedite backtracking (implying some degree of open-endedness to make backtracking worthwhile)
- Traversal has added flexibility thanks to reintroduced mechanics like the infinite bomb jump
- We don't know whether the old structure will be embellished with new shortcuts and alternate paths (as in ZM)

I haven't performed any kind of comparison of the map we've seen in SR to Metroid II, but I'm sure somebody else will.

Of course there's a precedent for mediocre devs making great games under Nintendo's supervision, and after seeing gameplay I'm a believer despite hating MS' past games, but I still can't fault fans for being skeptical. And hell, Artoon/Arzest have been in the same position for years and they remain bad, so it's not a flawless logic either.

This is literally every Metroid thread since FF was revealed, yeah. It honestly bums me out far more than actual fans complaining about a game I think looks fantastic.

It's simplier and better in Fusion than in Super Metroid. There the air physics being ass in Super Metroid too, even though it allows many of the sequence breaks.

Regardless of my opinion on the developer for this, will be buying this on release. Don't need to give Nintendo any excuses such as poor sales to hide metroid again.

I had zero doubts that MercurySteam could pull off a great Metroid game after the amazing work they did on Mirror of Fate.

Totally stoked for this.

Awesome, thanks for the more comprehensive answer! I definitely agree the some of the features shown hint at a slightly more open structure. Hopefully we get to see more on this before September!

Ideally for me, there should be some method of tackling areas out of order regardless of the Metroid gate.

It is unfortunate that there are no examples in Metroid history of mediocre developers pulling it together to make a good Metroid game.

If only we had proven developers, preferably Japanese, to make a Metroid game. That would be ideal.

Not sure if serious?

Certainly as soon as I saw the trailer I recognized MercurySteam's MoF engine at work, but I had a very different reaction.

After watching the gameplay, I'm not sure I really like the whole free aim thing. One thing I love about Metroid is the limited aiming and positioning myself for connecting shots. Not a knock on the game, just my own personal dislike. I dig the counter, so long as it's not easy as hell to do, and you should take more damage if you miss. It's only 30fps though, so how hard could they make it without it being unfair due to the framerate? Animations seems nice, and the run in particular is pretty sweet. Eh, I'll have to play it and see. It looks decent, but I'm straddling the fence as to if I personally like it as a Metroid title. I don't like Fusion as a Metroid either, though I liked the game and thought SA-X was genius.

The one hard knock I have from what I saw was the 30fps will forever look like ass in a 2D game, so no, I'm not going to excuse it just because it's a new 2D Metroid. It does look better than Castlevania so far, so that's good at least. Hopefully the level design more Super and much less Fusion. That would really sell me on this whole thing a lot more. Either way, It's not ass like the last Metroid game we got where they took the worst aspect from every Metroid game (the federation) and turned them into slow moving kids on top of being terrible in general.

where is your proof that this is 30fps? people throw that around like it's fact.

Free aim is glorious. Buying the crap out of this when it comes out. All of you whining about no metroid games better represent!

What more open structure are people talking about?
The old game was gated by lava that receded when you killed enough bosses.
Now it's gated by DNA gates!
If you can still kill the Metroids in any order you like it's still as linear as 2 (and way more open than stuff like Fusion).

As far as I'm concerned I'll give Mercury Steam a fair chance on proving themselves.

I didn't play the full version of Mirror of Fate; only the demo and coming off Metroidvanias like Aria/Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia it didn't make me enthousiastic about the final product. GAF's reaction kept me away entirely. But I do realize that game was still managed by... Konami. Yeah. It might be outsourced again, but the first positive previews are making me quite optimistic. Even if Other M didn't turn out to be that fantastic and Federation Force was just line-up filler, Samus Returns is a different game. No dialogues helps a ton.

With this game Nintendo really makes me appreciate their continued 3DS support and the great catalogue they delivered.

So we can confirm that free aim uses the circle pad, but we still gotta find out if basic movement is done with the d-pad. Samus' movement being controlled with the circle pad would be a deal-breaker for me.

Pretty sure it is. In that dev diary the guy says you have to stand still to free aim.

all this talk about metroid makes me want to replay super, but my wii u gamepad battery dies like in 30 minutes and i want to play this like a handheld ;/

switch VC when?!

This is stupid, why don't they make Samus move with the dpad and aim with the circle pad?
Considering you're not supposed to aim and shoot at the same time anyway...

I'll believe it when I see 60fps footage, coming from the dev team at play here. Simple as that, really. You are absolutely right though, there is no concrete evidence. Hopefully Mercury can surprise us.

This reminds me of Double Helix when they were making Killer Instinct. It ended up being amazing so I hope that this ends up great as well.

I'm totally serious. I'm not sure what anyone's beef was with that game. I had a lot of fun with it. It looked great and played great. Maybe it's just a matter of differing tastes.
