Metroid: Samus Returns Impressions: "I didn't want to stop playing."

Game's looking really good so far, maybe hoping against hope there will be a demo soon. Looked really solid in that dev diary showing off the old and brand new stuff. I only hope its sufficiently expanded in certain ways over the original, as the old game was kind of linear and there wasn't too much you could do in terms of exploration besides clear out metroids and drain the lava.

In Treehouse the devs said that there would be a 3D trailer on the 3DS eShop but I can't find it, is not up yet?

It's been up for a while on the US store, it's one of the first things you see when you entet it, but I've read lots of european fans saying it's nowhere to be found on theirs.

Oh, thanks, that sucks, and it's funny because it's an Spanish developed game after all :(

Oh man, Metroid 2 was probably the game that really put me into gaming. I was born in 84, so missed some of the earlier stuff. I got a NES for Christmas in like 91 or 92 I think? Just had Mario, a boy and his blob and some shitty knock off games you had to connect into the real NES game to boot up and then get working. I dunno.

Mario was great but I could never beat it. Boy and his Blob was amazing but just so confounding and I simply remember a screen where jellybeans fell from the sky and killed me.

We moved from Australia to America and couldn't bring the NES as it wouldn't connect properly. My brother and I got Game Boys for Christmas that year in 93, He got Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, I got Yoshi's Cookie and Metroid 2.

It took us I reckon about 6 months of playing that game together to beat it. Countless AA batteries throughout many road trips and weekends. It was some collaborative shit. We had notebooks written of maps of where we reckoned we had to go to get things later. We tried to bounce everywhere on bombs in ball form. We would scream in fear when the Metroid's would pop out with that noise blaring to alert you to their presence. And then the ending. Finally beating it. It was an act of catharsis, running at the end with that baby metroid with you. Just amazing.

I can't wait for this remake!!!

Gameplay actually looks pretty good, but the 30fps and unappealing lowres 2.5D are a bummer. And unlike everyone else I'm not going to overlook this just because it's a new 2D metroid.

it's pretty damn straightforward. I was never lost or puzzled about making it anywhere.

I'm talking about stuff like "you're supposed to head to this room, but in actuality you end up going to another room, getting another upgrade in the way, and then you end up in this room not from your intended destination"

Guys.

There's a new 2D-style Metroid coming in a few shorts months. After 13 long years.

... How crazy is THAT?!!!!!

Still seems surreal.
I grew up playing Metroid games, Super Metroid always has been and still is my favorite game of all time.

I'm 22 years old, I've been waiting for a new side-scrolling Metroid game for over half my life. I was a bit cautious at first, but the treehouse footage looks so good. Sure having it on Switch would be better, but we can't have it all. Its finally a good time to be a Metroid fan again.

My biggest issue with fusion besides all the chatter was how they would put a waypoint on the map to show you where to head next. I forget if that was in Zero mission, but I hope it isn't here. The scanning stuff is neither here nor there for me personally. Power bombs did the same thing before more or less, even though it was limited to the room you were in.

If I'm remembering correctly, ZM was even worse than Fusion in that regard.

In Fusion, most times you were given a point on the map to go to, and if you hadn't been there before (which was pretty much 90% of the time if I recall), you had to find out how to get there. This was the same for Zero Mission.

Fusion was harder though since quite a few times you would also have to locate a security station to unlock the doors to the place you needed to go... and security stations were not marked on the map (and were usually nowhere near the target).

Definitely hope it takes after Zero mission more than super metroid. Super metroid may have that extra isolated feeling and better exploration (something ZM had in spades thanks to that extra area) but it's controls were hot garbage. Free aim looks like a boon to have and having fine control of aiming in A 2d platformer is always great. Wall jumping was also integral to actually doing things at your own pace and allows you to skip certian upgrades that you thought was necessary and I hope that carries over here as well.

What's with all these baseless 30fps claims? Not only does the frame rate of the stream meaning nothing for the frame rate of the game, but the stream was 60fps! Jeez.

The stream was outputting at 60fps but the game was 30fps. Each frame in the game is doubled when you move the video forward one frame at a time, but the camera footage in the corner proceeds normally as it was 60fps. This could mean they were capturing the game at 30fps, but that's unlikely given that the Mario & Luigi footage later in the day was captured from a 3DS and running at 60fps.

I guess this still isn't conclusive enough, but while the treehouse stream itself was 60fps, the Metroid footage looks like it's 30, and it's easier to compare when you watch the Mario & Luigi segment, which is clearly running at 60. I think the "30fps stream" talk is about the GameSpot stream yesterday that showed off the game too, not Nintendo's.

People talking shit about the developer should go and dig all the trash a lot of gaffers talked about Retro, it was fucking tiring.

Downloaded the trailer on the 3DS after seeing a few mention it here. Man this game looks great with the 3D on. Cannot wait for this game

Do we have any archives of old GAF threads regarding Metroid Prime when it was still in development? Like from 2001-2002? That'd be neat to see.

I can remember playing Metroid 2 quite a bit when my parents took us when we visited our grandmother. Spider ball every ceiling.

What I remember from IGN at the time was Halo VS Metroid Prime trash talk. There was no doubt hating for the sake of hating, I just never paid any attention to it.

Not GAF, but
Are you kidding?! I'm not happy about this at all!
Metroid was a JAPANESE game! RETRO STUDIOS?!?!?
BASED IN TEXAS?!?!? EX-IGUANA MEMBER?!?!?
Regardless of GameCube's techinical specs and capabilities --
Metroid could go the way of the Pilotwings 64 or worst -- Contra series.
I hate when shit like this goes down. Metriod couldn't have been that bad
in Japan to favor this. Man, if only Gumpei Yokoi ( RIP ) could see this --

he'd turnover in his grave! Either get Nintendo's EAD to do Metroid or
don't do it at all!

Other Metroid fans knows what's up -- Speak your peace!
Well, now that we have Unrea... Oops, Metroid on the way, who wants to take
bets on how much it'll suck? It's clearly totally divergant from everything
that made the past Metroid games worth playing.

Bring it on. Just don't ever call it Metroid again
but the big difference is that when those games made the jump to 3D they were
still developed by Nintendo, Metroid is being made by a shitty US developer
Will Retro destroy Metroid?

Think of some other awesome 2D SNES games that were destroyed when they made
the transition to 3D...

Contra 3 The Alien Wars
Castlevania 4

Contra was turned into two horrible 3D PSX games... And the awesome Castlevania
4 turned up as a bad 3D game on N64...

I think Metroid should remain a side scrolling game, but 2.5D like Yoshi, but
not soo darn cute of course

Do you agree? Or should it be 3D and more likely than not a bad! Doing a game
in 3D just because you can does not
make it a good idea...

E-mail Nintendo at nintendo@noa.nintendo.com

Tell them not to let Retro destroy The Metroid
series!!!
nope, Metroid's main theme was always exploring, not shooting, besides this
won't be a true Metroid game anyway since it is not being developed by
Nintendo...

I have Metroid II: Return of Samus on my 3DS VC. Played a little bit of it, but put it down for a long while. After this announcement, I'm really enticed to go back and give it another shot. Is the game difficult to traverse without a map like the original Metroid?

It's much more linear than the original Metroid, so I find it much easier to progress.

Still, the lack of a map can make it tricky for some people.

Just to add to this I think the biggest problem with Metroid II is the Gameboy hardware. The game has a fairly small and straightforward world but it all looks exactly the same. This can make it difficult to remember where you are going/have been without just memorizing the layout.

That said I think the game is still worth a play through. I played it a few years back on VC and it only took me 5-6 hours max if memory serves; and that was with some mindless wandering after getting lost due to what I explained above. If you find yourself in a rut don't be afraid to use a guide or save states.

Much appreciated!

I wonder how modern audiences are gonna take to Metroid 2's search and destroy gimmick. Feels like Nintendo gave up on that idea too quickly, it's a clear and concrete way to show that the player has made progress. Like even if you get lost odds are that you at least found and killed a few Metroids so it wasn't pointless.

The original Metroid II is so weird. It's a game that is hurt a lot by the lack of color (the iconic Varia Suit shoulder exist to make a visual difference from the regular one without relying in color!), lots of maps look exactly the same and the music is kinda terrible most of the time... And yet it's so unique and the kind of challenge it has is unlike any other Metroid game's. Hell, I'd say the odd music is the first attempt they had at atmospheric music in the series, and it really adds to it in the long run.

Plus the final battle is badass, and the ending is extremely special. The game is great.

Finally managed to get my pre-order in for the Special Edition.

Beyond excited to jump back into this series... and, at long last, hopefully wash the taste of Other M out of my mouth.
