I never understand this. Just don't play the more competitive modes and consider Turf War & Salmon Run like a single player game with very stupid bots.

It's not like you have to interact with anyone or if playing with randoms involved deep strategy and planning or anything. I fail to see how what can be disliked about "competitive online multiplayer©" (which I don't like either btw) really applies to games like that. Same for Overwatch with quickplay and arcade mode.

At worst you'll sometimes blame an innocent over your own failures like the rest of us and call it a day

Well most of my problem is the inability to pause- that's a bit easier in online co-op games (like Diablo) where you can just say "AFK" and usually people will respect that. I guess it's timed matches which I don't like rather than general competitive multiplayer.

because you said:

I'd say yeah go ahead and get it. I'm not much into competitive online multiplayer either and yet I put over 1000 hours into the first Splatoon. it's a really great in that aspect. the fact that you had fun during the testfire and splatfest and said you'd play some online makes me think that you'd really dig it.

Well I'm more wondering if it will make a big difference whether I get into it now versus 1-2 (or more) months from now. It's a Nintendo game so I don't expect the price to change but it's more splitting my time between this and BotW and all the indie games I have in my backlog. And I know if I wait to get Splatoon 2 I'll be getting a lot more content due to the free DLC.

But if the matchmaking is good enough so that it'll always be able to put you with like-ranked players I guess it absolutely doesn't matter when I get it.

EDIT: Bought it cause why the hell not.

It's really shitty that I can't play ranked matches with friends.

that's what league battle is

honestly for turf wars it doesn't really matter. sometimes you'll win huge, sometimes you'll get wrecked, and sometimes it'll be tight until the finish. each match is 3 minutes and it's really fast paced so it's pretty chill. also my personal recommendation is to get in on the ground floor because one of the best aspects of Splatoon for me with the first game was being there when the new content dropped. it's really fun to jump on when something new goes live. for new weapons you'll jump into a match and you could have 6 out of the 8 people using the same weapon which is always hilarious. in the last game they introduced a seeker rush special as a DLC weapon and seeing a bunch of seeker rushes go off was pretty nuts. stuff like that. also playing on a new map for the first time when it's new to everyone else as well is really fun and when a new one goes live it's usually in the rotation for 24 hours or so before they start cycling it out so you can really get a good feel for it. so that's just my recommendation because I really enjoyed experiencing the content rollout as it happened and seeing the meta develop in response.

Nah ranked is solo queue only. League battle has it's on leaderboard system and that's the only way to party up with friends.

I have a feeling my friends and I are gonna get about 1/10th the mileage out of this than we should've because of how jacked up and 1998 the online system is. How can you not have a system in place for people to group up and play random or ranked matches? It's inexcusable.

I'm getting some weird input lag in regular matches that I wasn't getting in Salmon Run. I stay as a squid long after I've let go of the trigger. Playing with a Pro controller on TV.

To anyone on the fence (such as I was): get the game, the beautiful thing about it is that it is less of a competitive shooter, and more team/objective based with the ability to focus on a certain task (like just splatting the ground) and can avoid, to a great extent, having to get kills. Aside from the occasional "too many newbs!" And "I killing all these newbs so hard lol!", you'll be able to grow with a curious and fresh community. Jump on board!

We nneed a fucking "PLAY THE OBJECTIVE" emote.

Fucking team just run the other end of the rainmaker for no reason.

A "group up" would be good as well. I've had times where the rest of my team kept running to the objective and dying so we were all split up.

Am I right in understanding that the only way to play consistently on the same team as friends is by unlocking rank, then getting everybody that wants to play together to B- in ranked solo queue, and then you still can't queue into League Battle with a group of only 3?

Oh wow. This isn't even normal input lag. It only happens with things not related to movement. I remain shooting long after I've let go of the trigger. Input delay in throwing bombs. Remain a squid long after. Wtf is happening.

those things exist though

Yeah, it's pretty crappy. I've gotten a couple of kills with it, but it felt like I had to hit them 10 times before they finally fell.

thank god my blaster is reliable again.

not being able to tell if this guy was going to take two indirect hits or three was a major pain in the ass, as was a squidkid suddenly turning kraken on you at any given moment

On the other hand, its reliability took a hit from the first game as far as accuracy goes, as the weapon will now maintain full RNG Spread whilst jumping until you land. It used to be possible to time shots so that you could jump forward to get more range, and maintain perfect accuracy, making blasters extra deadly. Still seeing a lot of blasters jump shot in Splatoon 2; probably muscle memory, as it no long helps them.

Still seems to deal a minimum of 50 DMG though.

Yeah but I couldn't aim for shit anyway so it's all good

I rely pretty much on flanking

I thought you could play turf war with friends?

You can but you can't "party up" with them... you just join their turf war lobby from the menu and it will place you in their lobby but some games you'll play on their team and some games you'll be on the opposite team.

I was talking ranked and about the ability to queue together as a group.

Ahh fair enough. I can deal with that.

Had a moment in Salmon Run where we had one egg left to score, and I was the last person up. Had a wave of enemies coming towards me, so I used the power move that can shoot through walls. Killed the enemies, just managed to pull the weapon towards the allies who got downed reviving them, though a blockade, and one of them managed to score a golden egg.

Booyah.
Booyah.
Booyah.
Booyah.
Booyah.
Booyah.

This is really fun.

I just had an entire rainmaker game where both teams played it like turf wars. :/

Honestly Nintendo should of added an tutorial or a objective blah blah blah at the beginning of the match.

Kinda hate that we can't team lock in turf war, we are two playing together and we are both whiny ass babies when we end up on the losing side when placed in different teams. Salmon run did not help either because we got different meal tickets so I'm grumpy about not gaining the same amount of xp and his jealous of my bigger pile of money.

We are having more trouble staying friends when on opposing teams here than we have ever had while playing Mario Kart.

Salmon Rush is so so good. Almost worth the price of admission. The motion controls finally clicked for me and with my new pro controller (
holy shit also so good
), this feels like a giant leap from Splatoon 1.

I dunno why they gave the Aerospray MG those fucking spam bombs as a special because the gun itself already crushes turf war but that special really fucks up your team if the enemy has multiple Aerosprays which is really fucking common.

It's overpowered for sure. I consistently get over 2000 points with it. Not many people seem to have caught on yet, but it's a matter of time before turf war becomes full of teams with nothing but Aerospace MG.

The curling bomb launcher is without doubt the best special for turf war in my opinion.

Takes a long time to get to level 10 eh? Expected things would go quicker than this, I just want to see what ranked is all about.

Get some tickets from Hero Mode. With an XP boost I ranked up to level 17 in no time at all.

It's worth sticking with a weapon too, as you then get xp bonuses when you consistently win.

The matchmaking in this game seems fucked though, I end up in a room with lot's of level 1's etc. I appreciate there aren't many people ranked up too high at this stage, but still....

Just learned the hard way just because the opposing team lost a player doesn't mean it's a sure win for you. Followed that up with the worse Splatoon beating of my life. * sigh *

just turned level 7
i starting to feel this game is less about skill and more of a race to better weapons/clothes. I'm guessing the real game starts when i'm max level

I don't agree. I'm using a low level weapon even though I'm ranked 17. I can't remember what level the Aerospace mg unlocked but I'm doing very well. I've not even checked the weapon shop to see what weapons I've unlocked since purchasing that.

No you can't

You can join one other person, but you join their lobby and it's not a party. You will be playing on opposite teams and will not have voice chat.

If you want voice chat, you can only play private matches.

oh yeah I wasn't saying anything about voice chat
