About to play the game for the first time today after the Splatfest. Any good tips/posts/guides directed at newbies?

Welcome to the Velvet Room!!!

Wait! This isn't Persona, Mediking!

Welcome to Splatoon 2!!!

I recently got the game yesterday and lemme tell ya... its the real deal.

I'm still a newb too so I don't know everything but I do know that the game ia very fun and addicting.

I guess I suggest that you play at your own pace and be prepared to play for hours on end without pausing.

Holy shit my stupid fucking team let the other team waltz to the finish in literally 20 seconds. They were just fucking standing in the middle of the stage like fucking brainless morons while one dude carried the rainmaker by himself to the end.

I have brutal luck with it too, I can handle everything in Turf Wars, and Salmon Run, but ranked just ugh.. At C rank everyone is just running around with fast guns "call of duty-ing" everyone to death, but I gather their technique isn't good enough to keep them in B so the ones trying to break free get stuck with them lol

Every post by you in here is about your damn noobish team mates. I start thinking the problem is not the other players, but you?

I mean maybe but it's hard when the matchmaking is so skewed, you'd think it would balance teams a bit better when they start spawn camping or doing 30second wins /shrug

I mean, Splatoon 2 is a sequel to a game a lot of people liked, so it'd be pretty reductive to say people are only into it because they're caught in the hype. It just simply might not be for you lol

Nah I don't think people are artificially hyped for it. I do of course believe that the people who are hyped for it, genuinely enjoy the game. However I think, that in many cases the way they represent that is a little distorted, it's one thing for it to be a new, enjoyable shooter with some new ideas, it's another to suggest that it's the second coming of christ, which isn't all that far off how some of the community act.

Sometimes I also feel that it's the shooter for people that don't like shooters. So it's neat that is captured a new audience as a result of that, but for people that do like shooters, for people that very much enjoy the like of Rainbow Six or Titanfall, the changes that Splatoon makes don't have the impact that they have for others. For instance I can't say I've ever wanted a shooter to be non-violent or not directly focused on its combat between played. While I will happily play a shooter that is, and I'm interested in its ideas, it doesn't automatically make the game more appealing for me, that contrasts views I've heard expressed by others, where the game is automatically great because it caters to their desire to play a shooter that's different in that way.

Either way. I'm going to buy it on Monday and we'll see if I like it or not. I hope I do.

Do you recommend I start with some offline solo play?

Cool

I should keep playing until I completely de-rank to C-. It's what I deserve anyway.

Thanks! :D

Yup! Offline solo play then head online!

Offline solo play has been great so far. But online has totally snatched me away.

You might even see me online or on the lobby with a badly drawn anime character post!

Got my first B- rank, in Tower Control. 3 days in, barely played Wii U game for 5 hours. Being able to play portable comfortably is such a big thing for me.

I cannot count how many times I've died because some moron jumped to me while I was hiding from an enemy.
It's almost never worth actually jumping unless their team is (mostly) wiped or you're going to an area you know is under control.

Only exception is in the last 30 seconds of Tower Control when you have the tower and it's a mad rush to make their base.

Meh. I'm sure they're thinking to come help. You guys keep blaming teammates for everything, but in a game like this voice chat with others are needed to.

actually this one is easy - you can see how many enemies are alive and you can see on the map ink concentrations around your buddy

i have no idea why anyone with a modicum of experience squid jumps to the front except in certain situations in ranked where speed can be imperative

Made it to A- in Tower Control. Felt like I may have been lucky with my teammates a few times but I've definitely improved my game by not just mindlessly attacking the tower. Now I scope out the area and sneak up on enemies before jumping on.

Rainmaker I'm still at B. I enjoy it but it's also the most frustrating of the modes for me. Also with Rainmaker I feel like my skills vary a lot with the stage. Sturgeon Shipyard does not agree with me in Rainmaker.

Splatzones I've barely had a chance to play since it never seems to be in rotation when I'm available. Today was the first time I played it and I was shocked to go straight from C- to B-. I guess my skills in the other modes helps. I did feel like I was dominating a little in those C- games.

All in all, ranked is a great learning experience that doesn't let you move up until you're ready.

Okay so I just had a Rainmaker match completely glitch out on Starfish Mainstage:

After getting KO'ed and coming back, a bunch of visual effects were suddenly missing. The visual that happens whenever someone gets hit by ink was gone but the sound effect was still there. So I'd hit someone with ink and visually it would look like they weren't hit, but audibly you could hear them getting hit. And then they'd die after hearing them get hit a ton without seeing them get hit.

The barrier around the Rainmaker, the aura effect it has, and the Rainmaker's attacks completely vanished. So I'd be hitting an invisible Rainmaker barrier until hearing it pop and once someone started firing it I could hear it fire but the attack was invisible.

The character icons also disappeared from the map screen and my ink meter also disappeared.

There might have been some other anomalies but those are the big ones I can remember right this second. The whole match was bizarre.

EDIT: It just happened again.

Salmon Run is hard af right now, and it's definitely the weapons that are causing the difficulty. The Steelheads pretty much require whoever has the Mini Splatling and/or blaster to take care of them. Plus everything but the Splatling has to be pretty damn close to hit anything. I think I have only gotten through the final wave 3 times so far during this Salmon Run session.

Also why does no one bother throwing bombs into the Maws? I keep seeing everyone just waiting to shoot it.

Meh. I'm sure they're thinking to come help. You guys keep blaming teammates for everything, but in a game like this voice chat with others are needed to.
There is zero reason to jump to somebody and help in that case. Zero, nada. You kill yourselve and your mate and your team is down two people. The enemy has a chance to easily win the match with a counter attack.

I thought about a peanut butter and ketchup sandwich for a moment.

Then I realized that.. wait.. the gyro place down the way from me always has crispy Euro style fries with the good seasoning and mayo.

So, I picked Mayo.

I'm going to cover everyone in Mayo during the SplatFest.

This is my first Splatoon game and I'm absolutely loving it. It's tons of fun to play in single player and multi. Never got to play the original since I sold my Wii U early on.

Played my first games of salmon run online after completing the training, and I've yet to play many other game mods as I haven't hit level 10( lvl 9 atm)

So you can stack abilities? Meaning you can have double the amount of them?

Yeah, Salmon Run isn't even worth playing in this state.

I've only been playing 25 minutes and have made it through twice. Half the time it's only three of us, and if the gatling gun is gone, you're completely screwed.

There should always be at least one standard weapon with a quick firing rate in this mode.

I know you have to do tutorials before Salmon Run to know how to take out the bosses but sometimes I wonder if the randoms I've been paired up with even paid any attention to them...

Steelhead weakness is the bomb on its head so shoot it..."Hey guys, let's shoot the body"

Eel boss (forgot the name) weakness is the rider on the back so shoot it..."Hey guys, let's shoot the head and body"

Griller weakness is the tentacles that stick out so shoot them..."Hey guys, let's shoot everything but that"

etc, etc, etc

---

also, I had one wave where I had the gatling type weapon and I had to do more ink coverage around the container than the person with the roller because they were clear across the map and not making sure areas were clear for us to even swim in for safety
