I just got this game last night and have a few questions:
Are the ultimates you get tied to the gun you buy? Could I ever get a Roller with a different ultimate than the one I currently have? Same with the gear, is it all random?
What are some other general tips or things I may not know?

Yep, it's reaaaaaallly good in turf war. I imagine it will get needed. It's my main. Wouldn't use it too often in ranked though.
Well, the good players have certainly come out to play in the European Splatfest. I need to up my game to keep up with them. Went on a hilariously long losing streak today, lost of Ketchup vs. Ketchup matches, too. I think the verdict on the Dualie Squelchers for me is... decent, love the range and dodge roll combo, point sensor actually got me a kill (roller user thought they were clever by not following me as I backed away around a corner), but... Still haven't found the weapon that clicked for me yet.
Any recommendations for a weapon that has decent range? Still only level 12, but if it's higher, it's something to aim for. I kind of want something with the ink rain special. That looks fun to use. But I'm finding it difficult to find the weapon for me yet.

Is the splatfest in a specific place in the plaza? When I played this afternoon, nothing looked different

Seems most people are. It's a very one sided Splatfest again looks like, at least choosing wise

They're great at spreading the ink and getting points. I'm actually surprised they still get as many points as they do. I always felt it was way to much in the original.

I have 3 friends who own a Switch and Splatoon 2. Right now 3 of us wanted to play together while the fourth is at the supermarket. Well fuck us, right? Cant do team splatfest unless we have four. Oh well, well we can join using the friends section right? Nope fuck off, that's not a thing today. Thank God we all picked Ketchup. Because if even one was Mayo we won't get the chance at all to play together. This is real ass backwards. Splatfest should 've driving people to the game on the same day and instead it's driving actual friends away from playing together.

Mayo. They've not veen all bad but geez, tgese others are an active hinderance.
Worse is superjumping to me when I'm 3 seconds away from the spawn AND in a firefight.
