Are they on their way out? Social media is currently imploding with bots and astroturfing. The writing is on the wall... for social media.
Forums survived internet 1.0 and internet 2.0. They have longevity because they work. Kids won't be attracted to the dumpster fires Facebook and Twitter have become.
Interesting point I didn't really think about the infestation of bots in social media. You might be right.
Another thing besides tight moderation that made GAF a good place for discussion was the fact that you had to have a paid email and the approval process was not instant. It made users feel like there account had a bit more 'value'. They became more invested in making good contributions for the most part.
GAF did a lot of things right. It's a real shame how it's ending but I can't say its unwarranted.
