Are they on their way out? Social media is currently imploding with bots and astroturfing. The writing is on the wall... for social media.

Forums survived internet 1.0 and internet 2.0. They have longevity because they work. Kids won't be attracted to the dumpster fires Facebook and Twitter have become.

Interesting point I didn't really think about the infestation of bots in social media. You might be right.

Another thing besides tight moderation that made GAF a good place for discussion was the fact that you had to have a paid email and the approval process was not instant. It made users feel like there account had a bit more 'value'. They became more invested in making good contributions for the most part.

GAF did a lot of things right. It's a real shame how it's ending but I can't say its unwarranted.

I don't know how much you guys know about shower equiquite, (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an ***hole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase NeoGAF for either system, nor will they purchase any of Tyler Malka. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but NeoGAF has alienated an entire market with this move

People complain that posters jumped on others - wars for formats/platforms/politics/sports teams etc. But this was still a way more civilised place than most places. People are dicks generally, and more so when they have internet anonymity. Topics like politics etc are never going to be completely polite

My bottom barrel for civil discussion is that I expect people to be able to have an argument without threatening the other party, or at least the admins taking prompt action upon a poster threatening another forum user.

Neogaf failed to meet that standard, putting it at roughly the same level as Twitter, Tumblr, and the worst areas of Reddit.

The idea neogaf was a high point for civil discussion is frankly nonsense.

protest boards almost never ever succeed. other than the first handful of people it will be hard for it to grow since people won't know these boards exist. there is also the danger of some of the people there not liking certain things and then splitting off and creating their own boards. i've seen this stuff play out over the many years i've been going to message boards.

People will break off and will try to promote their own forums, and find how difficult it is maintaining a forum. If any of them do take off it will only show what a pain in the ass a popular forum is. You always feel like your juggling balls of shit that don’t really matter in the long run.

Gaf has some sub communities that are very tight and can run off to run their own little spectrum of the internet, the issue than becomes it’s just you and your online buddies who all talk alike. Acquiring new members is never easy and people get leery of letting new people into such small groups.

Anecdotal fun, I remember the collapse of the largest maplestory story community due to the owner using our contribution funds to pay for his cost of living. None of us mods got paid for months until the owner vanished with the few thousand dollars we had saved up to keep the forums alive.

One of our best contributors left and started his own forum lamenting how awful we were. The karma point; a year later he couldn’t afford the cost and asked for Paypal donations to view exclusive news first. Money that ultimately went to him, same drama killed his forum.

Worst was a PSO community hub i did forum design for and the owners wife left him for a mod who was a real life friend. Site was shut down and I never heard from him again. Sad...

Same here. I used to be an admin on a runescape private server called frugooscape and also unrealscape. Both eventually went down and we tried to make frugooscape reborn and unrealscape reborn (forums and a server/game). THey were popular for a bit, but eventually died and never reached the levels as the origin. There's just somethings you can't replicate. Furthermore, you can't please everyone and you dont realize how difficult it is to run a massive forum until its too late

I agree with all of this. I’ve been down this road before when the original creators of Neopets declared that they were going to make a BIGGER and BETTER site. I was strung along for years, and their plans eventually collapsed.

Recently, it reminds me of all of the Bitcoin forks. “We’re going to make a BIGGER and BETTER Bitcoin!” and then everyone just sticks to Bitcoin.

I distinctly remember being banned once over stating that it was fine for heterosexual men to not prefer transgender women; that the right to sexual preference was an individual right.

I support transgender rights mind you and yet somehow ended up on the 'wrong' side of this particular mods worldview.

The exact same argument would occur again from the same moderator in a chain of circumstances that ultimately led to their demodding and as now, ensuing drama.

One need only look at the user reaction currently to realize that something is off kilter about the environment. You could certainly experience a Neogaf free from this but in a lot of cases, issues approaching political or social discourse posed a problem.

The new approach is probably more sensible though not foolproof since politics and social discourse often intertwine into gaming.

I actually got banned for something similar too. I took it in stride as I knew the overall goal was inclusiveness. But for about a day or so I was mad about it.

It's been known that the ban hammer here has been a little too quick at times.

There is also a ton of people who should never have been banned. Many mods abused their privilege to ban people they didn't like vs breaking any rules. Hopefully that will change with them gone now but it is a wait and see.

I have been reading and watching some youtube videos regarding the recent development regarding NeoGAF.

To be quite honest, it just feels wrong.

I am talking about people trying to take advantage of this weak moment of this forum trying to promote their own forums (whether it is existing forum, not entirely new forum just made over the weekend). Sure, I can see that it could be a good business to try to get some of the members from GAF but it does show that these people who criticize GAF is really just kicking it while it is down and more over, trying to benefit from it.

I mean, even people here do it/did it, like the mods making new forums to replace this one.

People who want NeoGAF will just have to wait and see if the discourse here improves but there's a certain element that comes around with the anti-SJW crew that the latest drama has emboldened that really negates discourse on things NeoGAF holds dear and several of the main facilitators of discussion have publicly moved on. It's clear it won't be the same forum it was a week ago. People holding on to hope that we can 'just discuss games' need to find a place that has that kind of history.

The mods of this forum have always taken themselves too seriously but it probably comes with the territory.

I think it’s funny that people define this forum as Evilore, he has never been this forum. it’s only ever been about it’s posters and quality of posting and information provided. I’m sure people know this forum has migrated multiple times and always survived.

For the last 18 years GAF has been my news filter/ collector - I rarely post because it just became too unwieldy with 200k members and the echo chamber migrated from systems wars (fun and harmless) to society wars ( un fun and harmful)

I don’t recall the specifics of that Opa Ages post but anybody positing something from there is 100% suspect - there were joke accounts, crazy insane stuff, porn etc.... it was basically the dark net of forums for GAF. When you got banned at GAF which was pretty hard to do back in the day, you went there and railled against GAF. Of course that was the last great poster schism of the forum - it went on for years but eventually died. I can assure you those same posters are still around lurking

So carry on GAF - hope the spirit lives on here of quality posting and information. This forum maybe owned by Evilore but GAF is much more than that.

Just because you say left wing is just as bad doesn't make it true. There are facts to be discovered about the world. It's not just opinions.

Also , because someone has a gay brother and is generally civil doesn't mean they don't have bigoted beliefs.

I know you don't like the word, but it is what it is. If you don't think people deserve equal rights then you'll need to justify that position.
