Representation issues in video games are hardly all there is to discuss in video games and if you open representation issue threads in video games here, it reads like a troll fest, so not better either (coming from someone who couldn't possibly care less about representation).Wanna try some "videogame related" discussions on era? Open a thread about the idea of Nintendo giving the option of chosing Female Link on the next zelda or the next Pokémon having more options than "Boy and Girl". Let's see how many users have the eggs to post anything against of what the hivemind thinks.
The sheer consistency in which they accuse others of behaving in the way that they themselves act is staggering.

The stunning lack of self awareness never ceases to amaze me. Somebody get that guy a mirror.

Then let me be clear, Resetera is not a good place to discuss representation issues. But it is a good place to discuss other aspects of video games which, frankly, are what I care about in video games. If social justice activsts have their way and all human characters in video games are black overweight transgender women of 60 years age nothing would change for me.They are, indeed. But If you CAN'T discuss about some topics because the moderation will ban everybody not following the flow of the hivemind then you can't say that place is a good place to have discussions. Here in gaf there would be peolpe trolling? I'm sure they will, there also will some people trying to have a legit conversation about it. Shit when I get home (late this night EU time) I think I will re-open a "Female Link thread" in Videogames just to see what happens AND because I still hold a grudge because the last time I got banned in Gaf I think it was in that thread. I think.
Why they gotta be 60 years old tho? Then let me be clear, Resetera is not a good place to discuss representation issues. To counter ageism. Why they gotta be 60 years old tho?
I was always under the impression they, like me, where spiteful toward Baby BoomersTo counter ageism.

Since we have the distinction of genders in addition to the distinction of sexes and those distinctions are not the same, it is not redundant. If someone says "X is a man", then X may be a male specimen of the species human or a female one. I used "male man" to describe myself to make it unambiguous when it comes to my sex, rather than just saying "man", which could also mean I am a female human who identifies as a man.
Exactly! You think just as me, and that's why I think you can't discuss videogames on ERA just now because they are adding SJW shit to everything. Overwatch discussion about lack of "black women" that got multiple accounts banned, SMASH F*CKING BROS discussion about the lack of black characters on ultimate that also had some accounts banned, Wanna talk about Cyberpunk?? OH YOU ARE IN FOR A FREAKING RIDE if you say something like "I will get the game because I don't care about the tweets" or something like that. Kingdom Come Deliverance discussion? ARE YOU CRAZY? You can't say out loud you are getting the game done by a literal Nazi. Dragon Ball Z FighterZ had some people banned when some idiot asked why there were only 2 female characters and both of them rely on the other male characters to be usefull (A18 gets 17's help, Android 21 absorbs the powers of the other characters). You say something like "I want Ciri to be a white girl in Netflix's The Witcher just because It's like the one of the videogames?" BAN!!!
Of course, Yoshi, there can be discussions on that place, but it's like playing Minesweeper, you are so happy discussing about what's the best Smash Bros ultimate character and the next minute you are banned for posting a mr.Game & Watch picture for "dismissing minority bla bla bla bullshit".
Didn't you yourself, somebody that time ago said this taken out directly from the SJW-101 Classroom,
got banned there just for tripping on a mine?
ps: YES, I'm that kind of guy that in a relationship will bring something from 5 years ago to defend myself in a discussion xD
I got banned there for statements on religion (called it superstition I think), on ethnicity (I think that was me claiming that singing "Nigga" in a song by a black person on a concert is not racist), transphobia (defending Gervais: https://www.resetera.com/threads/what-in-god’s-name-happened-to-ricky-gervais.31672/page-12 ) and finally got permed for pedantery when I discussed whether it is semantically correct to say "a tranwoman is not of the opposite sex of a non-trans man". So, considering this ban history, I would say that the error lies within the claim that I am from the SJW-101 classroom. I am an advocate for free speech and for evaluating intent before judging, even if something may be hurtful to people.Didn't you yourself, somebody that time ago said this taken out directly from the SJW-101 Classroom,

It was on the topic of seeking partners and someone got banned for a long posting where he basically said that it is not transphobic for a straight male to not want a trans woman as a partner because they are looking for someone of the opposite sex and do not want a dick in their bed. That person gopt banned for transphobia and I argued that not the statement that transwomen are not of the opposite sex than non trans men was probably the issue, but the "dick in their bed" one. Turns out I was wrong. How did you get banned for saying something all those "pro-trans organizations" also say?
Edit: My bad i forgot there was a thread on resetera about how Trans people are real women so given how that thread went I guess still being in a male body no longer matters, they are not the opposite sex.................
I mean, that doesn't make sense and they won't be medically operated as such but now I know what else to be on the look out for. Surprised my account has still lasted this long over there.

This is very much incompatible with social justice activist's positions. The positions above (afte some discussion excluding Gervais) are also positions I would be in disagreement with my wife, who would classify herself as social justice activist. I wouldn't do the same for myself. Being respectful to each others is important, but being offended by something is not sufficient grounds to ban that statement or to not use it in a commedic context.
Also, by the way, my wife said above posting where you quoted me is borderline offensive because I do not use the preferred terminology, so chances are it would have netted me another ban on Resetera if I had posted it there (and wasn't already permanently banned).
Old Gaf bans didn't necessarily have anything to do with right or wrong. More about hurt feelings. Maybe it's the same over there now.I don't know how not wanting to be in bed with somebody that has a dick is transphobic. It would imply that not only is it wrong to be straight, but also that it's wrong to be gay or lesbian wouldn't it?

That was very true hereI think it comes down to mods themselves being heavily biased, banning anything they find slightly offensive.
Personally I'd love to get some insight into wtf SJW's are trying to accomplish and how the methods employed are somehow deemed constructive.
How is skin deep diversity more important than diversity of thought? How is the group collective taking precedence over individuals? Why is so called inclusion in truth the exclusion of opposing opinions? Why the intolerance for debate and the demonising of even the slightest outliers? Why so much value on oppression olympics? Why abolish any opportunity for building resilience of character, how can people cope with real life conflict if they are never exposed to it? Etc. etc.
I'm forever confounded by these extremes and what positivity they actually bring to the world. Lay it on me, give me a link, awaken me - even if just a bit.
I'd also like to make clear, I'm not American and I do identify with all key Liberal fundamentals.

I will try to answer this, but since this notion of social justice is not exactly a key concern of mine, it would probably be good ifPersonally I'd love to get some insight into wtf SJW's are trying to accomplish and how the methods employed are somehow deemed constructive.

Yo there are not NEARLY enough old women characters that are playable in video games and it's a damned shame. Why they gotta be 60 years old tho?
My ban on that site was probably the worst ban ever given there.
P.S. Thanks for the account approval. It would be dope if my old kbear account that got permed a decade ago could get merged with this one. I can provide proof of identity.

Your wife sounds like an idiot. Sorry.
Excuse me but his wife may identify as a partner and not wife and be non-binary. Now you will be sued over your misgendering.

I am offended!
Excuse me sir but "I"? I is a letter that looks like a male standing up. Stop that right now or I'm banning you for prior infraction history that doesn't exist.
It is a bit phallic, innit?

Well if you posted this on Era you would have been banned before you got your answer.
I will try to answer this, but since this notion of social justice is not exactly a key concern of mine, it would probably be good ifNobody_Important could have a look and maybe correct me here.
I think there are two questions in here:
1) Why is it important to have representation in games (or media in general)?
2) Why would you restrict speech in order to improve diversity in a forum?
My understanding is the following:
1) Many people find it integral to their enjoyment of a media product to find people they easily identify with. Since certain superficial aspects, such as ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation have a big impact on some people's way of experiencing the world - through microaggressions, structural discrimination and sometimes legal barriers - these traits play an important role in their ability to identify with a character in a fictional work. On top of that, due to a lack of representation, they feel a lack of validation by society and feel that if they are indeed represented (in their traits), positively, not as an alternative, but as the main or only choice, that is a confirmation that people around them see them as normal and their traits as desirable. I guess that for people with big problems in term of structural discrimination may feel stronger about this than people who have less issues with this, because they more often are lead to identify with the traits in question and feel more insecure about it.
2) Now some people, me included, have a rather dismissive stance on that. E.g. I would always say, the only thing important in a game is gameplay (which, certainly, is not uncontroversial even excluding the matter of diversity). If people feel insecure about certain properties or feel a lot of hostility targeted towards their properties, they may feel unwelcome, and thus not participate in discussions if such dismissive stances are not forbidden. If, in turn, they are strictly moderated, they feel empowered and more secure in the environment, even though technically, in a forum, the harm of course could only manifest in an abstract way anyway. So in order to reduce the negative feelings and to create a welcoming atmosphere towards groups that feel or are marginalised, it can be instrumental to be strict in terms of opposing positions, because those positions can easily be understood as personal rejections rather than a mere difference in perspective.
I am as well. I can try and share what I've got so far.
The goal, as I understand it - I could be wrong - is not that of equality, but what they call 'equity'. Equity = equality + reperations for past transgressions (to be redistributed in inverse proportion based on intersectional oppression), and the intrinsic privilege built into the patriarchy - for example, homosexual people will never have power over straight people by sheer biological privilege, there will always be more heterosexual people, and thus hetero and cis-gender privilege. The systems must auto-correct for this disparity, even if on the surface it looks like an inversion of the power dynamic.
People who do not share the white cis male privilege have a unique perspective exclusive to their intersectional identity - that others cannot understand - along with an understanding as an marginalized member of the white heteronormative values of society. Thus they are required for diversity in thought - they have perspectives that are unattainable and unaccessible by those in other groups.
This is a bit trickier without a foundation in postmodernism, that is to say there is an acceptable (and necessary) level of irrationality, as rationality is the tool of the white cis men who created Enlightenment values to codify and perpetuate their privilege.
A value statement may be something like 'hate speech is not free speech'. Hate speech could mean something like, say, there are biological differences betwen men and women that are objectively true and not social constructs we claim are objectively true with science. The categories 'men' and 'women' are themselves socially constructed, as are the tools of measurement.
I think these questions are best covered by Jonathan Haidt, and I would look into his work and public appearances.
It is a bit phallic, innit?
