Poked around and found that Miles Teller is playing the role of Goose's son. Glen Powell was originally up for the role, but ended up getting an expanded alternate role in the movie (he's playing volleyball in the trailer).

Besides his weirdness personally he makes good movies. And it makes me happy to see Live Die Repeat and Repeat. The MI movies have been pretty good lately and I never mind watching one. They have been better than the latest bond movies to me.

Love the Cruise missile. One of the most consistent actors of our time. Considering how many movies he's made I can only think of a handful of them that I didn't enjoy.
Some of the flight footage in this trailer looks phenomenal, shots of taking off from the carrier are gonna look so damn good in 4k

Top Gun is one of those movies I watched over and over as a kid. Regardless of his personal life, Tom Cruise is still a movie star people will line up to watch, no question. It's amazing it's taken this long to make a sequel. Those cockpit scenes in particular look amazing. Perhaps they were done in CG, but knowing Cruise he probably insisted filming them on a real jet.

Nah the F-18 is the closest thing to a proper old-school fighter still around, close to the F-14 at least, so for movie purposes it makes sense. The broken turd that is the F-35 is really not much cop and wouldn't be particularly exciting in a movie, the focus on stealth wouldn't fit. Plus the f-18 is a 2-seater, allowing callbacks to the original, while I think the F-35 is single-seater. F-22 is also single-seat, so that may explain ruling that out.
In other news: Please please please be awesome. Top Gun is one of my all-time favourite films, for the soundtrack alone let alone the sheer awesomeness of the film, a part of my childhood that means a lot to me and made me love motorbikes and fighter planes.

Based on wikipedia, the vast majority of the F/A-18s in use by the US Navy are the Single Seater F/A-18E version. Or have been converted to the E version.
But this movie is probably using the two seater F/A-18F version for filming purposes.
But there are certainly shots in the trailer that are the single seat version. So I suspect they will shoot the actors in a two seater for the cockpit shots. But then exterior shots will be the single seater.
Apparently Tom Cruise is a licenced pilot and is certified for many types of aircraft. But I don't think we should expect scenes of him actually flying of these 70M dollar jets.
