I don't doubt the shot of him taking off is really him inside the cockpit. However, the shot of the flyby over the flats is probably a VFX shot. It just doesn't make sense there is ZERO camera shake or vibrations when the camera is supposed to be on the ground. Considering the amount of force the plane generates as it flies by that close to the ground, you'd have to secure the camera deep into the ground, and even then there would still be vibrations. Let's put it this way, if we were to add a CG plane in a shot like this, there would be some sort of camera shake added in as well to make it feel more real.

I will have to check it out. First Man really impressed me with how it approached handling special effects.



Generally, CGI is great when used sparingly but you still need real world lighting to convince the audience as opposed to the usual studio lighting in front of a blue or green screen. But some movies do it better than others (e.g. Solo: A Star Wars Story).

The F-14 is one of the sexiest jets ever, true. It's also, to me, the biggest star of the Top Gun movie. The moviemakers are obviously aware of its iconic status, as proven by the last shot in the trailer, which is a nice little moment for the F-14. F-18s are beautiful, too, though, at least.

Nah the F-18 is the closest thing to a proper old-school fighter still around, close to the F-14 at least, so for movie purposes it makes sense. The broken turd that is the F-35 is really not much cop and wouldn't be particularly exciting in a movie, the focus on stealth wouldn't fit. Plus the f-18 is a 2-seater, allowing callbacks to the original, while I think the F-35 is single-seater. F-22 is also single-seat, so that may explain ruling that out.

In other news: Please please please be awesome. Top Gun is one of my all-time favourite films, for the soundtrack alone let alone the sheer awesomeness of the film, a part of my childhood that means a lot to me and made me love motorbikes and fighter planes.

F-22 definitely wouldn't have worked because as it was pointed out to me it is not used by the Navy. And yeah enemy engagements with stealth wouldn't be exciting but I'm sure hollywood would have made it exciting somehow (stealth defeating rader or some made up shit). It's just that the F-14 was such a amazing looking plane (and the F-15), and the F-18 no so much IMO. It's a shame the F-22 was so over budget, there were plans at one point for a swept wing version (as well as a 2 seater) for the Navy but they were obviously scrapped. Such a plane would have been perfect for this movie if it had existed because it would have been like a modern version of the F-14. Or perhaps they could have set this movie back in 2006 when they were about to retire the F-14. One last flight for Maverick and the F-14.
