Coronavirus cases in US reach 400

There are 400 cases of the novel coronavirus in the United States, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as state and local governments.
According to the CDC there are 49 cases from repatriated citizens from Wuhan (3) and the Diamond Princess (46). There are also 21 people from the Grand Princess.

Hi, so here's an update on my situation:

We met this morning with govt. officials from British Columbia health care, and were informed that one person came down sick after (correction: it was likely DURING) her shift last Saturday, and that subsequently she tested positive for Covid19. Since then an additional three people have gotten sick, and of the three two tested positive for Covid19.

Here's what we were told - that unless we're actually sick with symptoms we can't transfer the disease to anyone else (which I found surprising - but good to know). We were told that the incubation period is roughly 14 days - but again, that during this period it's unlikely we would transfer the disease to anyone else. We were not told to self-quarantine.

We were told that healthy people cannot be tested because the results will not be accurate - you actually have to be sick in order to take the test and see if you're positive or not. For this reason the rest of us (without symptoms) will not be tested.

We were informed to self-isolate if we show any signs of sickness whatsoever - even a slight cold.

Also, we're officially the first 'outbreak' in Canada, and we're also the first location in Canada to have a 'community spread' - in other words, my colleague is the first case for which the origin of infection cannot be traced. This means that in British Columbia there are likely people sick with Covid19 who don't know they have it.

Lastly, of the three people at my place of work who have Covid19, all three are exhibiting mild symptoms only.

I'll update you as this unfolds. So far we've had excellent leadership on this. The administrators are moving quickly now.

You're full of shit and that's all there is to it. You're not fooling anyone. If someone tries to "elbow bump" you in a situation where you would otherwise have shaken hands, you're not suddenly going to flip out and try to break their arm (like, seriously, you're so scared of an elbow bump, but you're going to grab their arm to try breaking it?). At most you'll just refuse the bump and explain your concern about sneezing into elbows or whatever.

Anyway, I'll leave it at that, but Internet Tough Guy nonsense is just annoying to read.

The chief difference here is that we know about it. We were also informed that in the next 14 days it will likely be the case that others will get sick. Again, we're now waiting for this to happen and all of us have been informed exactly what to do.

Again, I'll update as I go along. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe I'm the first Gaffer who's experiencing this firsthand (yay!), so I guess we'll see what happens.

So whats happening at your work? Is it shut down or everyone can just come in like usual? Not to get to personal but what type of field is it? Do you work in government, retail, finance etc... Not asking for company name or anything.

This is not as busy a forum as it once was years ago so any active poster might be seen as spam. Look at my news updates I post 3 posts in a row that would be considered spam but if I wait for someone new to post after me we would be here for hours without updates. I can't fill one post with too many links and news. I was called a spammer, don't worry about it.

If cases start popping off in Quebec I don't doubt that where I work is going to have it somehow. So far the only plan I know of is either our sister site takes up all the work (they are not in Canada) or we all go down to a back up site in Ontario. Which hell no I don't want to be stuck in some hotel for 2 weeks in Ontario where there are more cases then here.

They aren't testing widely, so it's way lower than the reality of people who *would* test positive if they did, but I do believe the death numbers are that low.

we have discussed this a lot, they are not testing, they are actively avoiding testing anyone, make it very hard to qualify for testing. If they test someone they worked at a school or something like that. They don't want cases.

China went to the extreme lengths it did because it fucked up the initial containment and let the disease get out of hand. Once a healthcare system is overwhelmed beyond capacity, things start to spiral out of control. This is the worst case scenario for areas that do not take proper countermeasures early enough.

Nowhere else in the world is at that point yet. Everyone is doing their best to contain the virus and not let it spiral out of control to Wuhan levels. The places I'd be most worried about are countries with shit healthcare and incompetent governments. First world countries are, more or less, handling it fine at the moment.

It's a possibility, but how accurate can this "math" be, when we can't even get accurate numbers to begin with? We're constrained by the testing kits. If detection methods are bottlenecking your data, then it can lead to erroneous conclusions. For example, we have more earthquakes on record than before, and autism rates are increasing more than before. Future scenario: my wife can't work from home because she has to see patients; I can work from anywhere. Let's say schools/daycare get shut down...that means we start saving $1000 a month on daycare costs, maybe I get my sisters or my retired parents to help watch the kid...and less money on gas for commuting? Assuming I don't get laid off because we don't have any components from China to make product, can I lose here?

Yep the stupidity has officially spread up here. Went to Costco today to get some stuff and they had a sign saying they had no masks no sanitizer and no rubbing alcohol. The toilet paper was apparently cleaned out within 20 mins of it opening this morning and there was a ton of kleenex and bottled water in its place.

Safeway and Sobeys were cleaned out as well. So many empty shelves of toiletries and cleaning supplies. Some companies making some big bucks from this.

I think it will be a mixture of both for many people. You will lose with some changes and win with others. I guess it depends if your extended family steps up to help with your kid.

This guy basically posited that it's not them trying to hide things, but more that they're trying to control the situation so that the people who truly need care can get it.

What the guy is saying doesn't make sense. People with light symptoms can be home quarantined, and even if they were quarantined in a hospital they aren't in the ICU getting oxygen etc. Limiting testing doesn't reduce the amount of deaths.
