Tony Hawk 4 wont have career mode

From their official website

The parks from THPS3 and THPS4 have been authentically remade in jaw dropping 4K resolution* with streamlined goals in a two minute format

So people are generally very dissapointed as the open world approach to THPS4 was basically its entire identity.

Some of those weird missions have you betting on rhino fights or girl fights.

Ofcourse completely removed from this release, and turned into 2 minute levels instead.

meh,, no career no play. I never liked tony hawk games anyway. I tried the remake of 1 and 2 when it launched and its just a tricks and score fest for twitchy gamers. I wasn't that type of gamer in my 20s when it came out and I am not now.
I loved skate 1-3 though. The edgyness, the intros, the awesome music, and the open world. It was skateboard the city. It's like what Skate or Die could of been if the series moved on from the nes.

I was planning to preorder this but if they’re not going to bother remake this properly, then there’s no point. Will wait for the tides to calm after release and join Capt. Jack on the high seas.

Again, I can’t say that I’m surprised by the prospects of another Microsoft product under delivering.

I've finished all of these tony hawk games (or at least 2-5) back in the day as they were coming out.. on pc on a shitty keyboard we all had back then.
I was a kid. These games were in english and I still knew what to do, how to do combos and everything.
These games came in as a 2nd nature. you just knew how to play these as a kid.

I tried playing the 2 remaster few months ago... holy shit what is this. How do I play this? What do I do?
No game ever made me feel so old. Like... was my childhood in another life lol. Everyone played these. No internet too for the most part. no youtube guides how to play. nothing like that.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
I don't know where OP is getting that there's no Career Mode in this?

Rebuilt from the ground up, THPS 3+4 will include parks from the original games as well as new locations (more on that later), plus a Career Mode that includes the original tours from both. Playing with friends? Cross-platform multiplayer supports up to 8 skaters at one time, meaning you’ll have plenty of competition.

From the official website. Don't trust what it says there on the Xbox website AT ALL.

The parks from THPS3 and THPS4 have been authentically remade in jaw dropping 4K resolution* with streamlined goals in a two minute format. Plus, tear it up in new parks including Waterpark with its grindable slides and a drained out lazy river that’s perfect for vert trick combos.

It doesnt mention anything anywhere about "original tours" being in there.

What Xbox is referring to is probably:

The career mode includes maps from both 3 and 4, and has the exact same structure. 2 minute levels with 'streamlined goals'.

1. It's an XGS game, so I'm not sure you'd think they wouldn't know.
2. It's on the official website as well.

Shred the original parks with the classic roster of skaters joined by new parks, skaters, and tricks in a remake of THPS 3 + 4, featuring Career mode, cross-platform multiplayer, enhanced creation tools, New Game+, and more. Alert the neighborhood and grab your skate buddies because the shred’s not dead. It’s back and better than ever.
Skate through a robust Career mode taking on challenges across two tours, chase high scores in Single Sessions and Speedruns, or chill out and dig into the map in Free Skate.

They said in a stream it would've taken another year to rebuild the NPC mission structure. Guess that means THUG is dead
Yeah, I have zero faith in Iron Galaxy doing anything but a basic portjob really. They are a shit ass developer in my eyes.

And all the people proclaiming "oh we'll get THUG1+2 if we buy this". Good luck if they can't even get simple NPC's working from a 25 year old PS2 game.

Career mode in Tony Hawk was always the mission objectives in every stage and going onto the next. You're getting it, but with 2 minute limits.

Yes, like I said, they reimaged the open world levels that had NPC's in them, where you could freely skate around to grab missions from them, into two minute levels that are in this "tour".

The career mode from THPS4 is gone. No more voiced NPC's giving you missions.

Now you will just go to the levels and do two minute runs with different objectives in them. Its nothing like the OG career mode.

It will, but maybe just not the way you want, but we honestly don't know for sure just yet. It does mention having a "robust career mode", and it also mentions, "The parks from THPS3 and THPS4 have been authentically remade in jaw dropping 4K resolution* with streamlined goals in a two minute format".

I think it's safe to be cautious and curious, but I think it's way too early to jump on some hate train personally.

Really sad if true...
I really don't get it... I remember when 1+2 released on Steam, I was like, this is super fun, but it's so sad that the studio closed down and we won't get 3+4, it would have been really cool to see THPS4 remade since it's quite different... but then nope, it's just like 1 2 3...

I don't understand.

I think its pretty obvious the normal career mode from 4 would be too much effort for this team

I don't get it though, the NPCs in THPS4 are quite "simple" (I don't mean that negatively), there aren't ton of crazy complicated scripts etc... It's just that instead of having the arcade 2 minutes, you are free to roam around the maps, and talk to NPCs to trigger objectives, in a more natural way.

I don't see how this would be too complicated and take a year more to make.
I'm currently working on a mod for Kingdom Hearts 3, where I remade the city Insomnia from Final Fantasy VS XIII / XV inside of it, and I made NPCs that you can talk to, and trigger different scripts and objectives, and I'm doing this alone in my room using UE4, so I don't think replicating the NPC from THPS4 would have been too complicated for a full team working on an official product. This is really weird.

Super disappointed and confused. I think the maps look great, and I personally really enjoyed 1+2, so I'm really happy to see this franchise alive, it's one of my favorites with SSX (I'd really love to see SSX come back too one day), but this is a disappointing choice for THPS4.

Hard pass until it goes on sale without the proper career mode in 4. I'm a huge THPS fan, but Iron Galaxy isn't going to cut it. It's too bad Activision decided to eat Vicarious Visions...

If it is changed, it looks like it'll probably be most of the same goals, you just won't ride up to different skaters to activate them. Depending on how much is actually changed, that might not be that bad.

Well it says 'streamlined goals" so that reads to me like collect the dvd, high scores, collect S.K.A.T.E

THPS3 was the last one I played back then, so I was actually looking forward to finally check out THPS4. Guess I will lower my expectations then.

Maybe it's because of my age, not super old but I was in Middle School when THPS1&2 released.

I felt like THPS3 was a total step in the wrong direction, waaaaaay too arcadey and terrible levels. Made me lose all interest in the series and I was still the key demographic for it.

THPS2 on PSX or DC is all I need. It's perfection IMO. I don't even like those remasters. I know it sounds silly but it was way too fluid for me, and obnoxiously fast. Couldn't even play it, whereas I can go into THPS1&2 and pick up like I never stopped playing either game. I don't know if the remasters are inherently faster, maybe it's just the framerate, but it was legit unplayable for what I expected.

Edit-

We need a remaster of Dave Mirra 2. Some of the proceeds can go towards CTE studies. RIP Dave :(

After reading that

After reading that page I think MM is right. The wording of streamlined and 2 minutes is too specific to not be a change in format.

For PC users it's easy. Grab an old copy off Ebay and throw it in your PS2 emu of choice, job done.

How is this so bad? Yikes. Like how did this get made into a product with such a bad premise/spec doc? Ugh this sucks. I was excited for this one when I saw it was getting remade. Why is everything ruined nowadays

We heard rumors last year that the project was cancelled so the partial probably got handed over to another, lesser studio.

I was in my 20s and feel the same way. THPS2 on the Dreamcast is my favorite. I really didn't care for THPS3 and I honestly don't remember a lot about 4. I completely checked out of the series with THUG. I think what ruined the series for me was the constant need to add moves that linked combos together. THPS never aimed for realism, but hundred million combos was just a bridge too far for me. I get why people like it though.

I mean, that extra year would've gotten me to buy it. Now I'm not. So... lazy or greedy? Whatever it is, the jokes on them.
