First screenshots of Respawn's Star Wars Tactics game

interesting, but I'm kind of bored of these types of tactics games.

When Xcom was revitalised it was a breath of fresh air but now these games are a dime a dozen and none of them really do much to shake up the formula.

If it's former XCOM devs then they already have the Stormtrooper aim perfected:

That's what I was about to talk about. I hoped it didn't have this stupid % hit... but looking at the screenshots, it's there.
Midnight Suns was from XCOM devs and it didn't have this at all, and that's why it's my favorite tactical game.
The only "rng" in midnight suns was the card you draw from your deck, but you still have a lot of control over it and there are tons of system to get yourself out of a bad situation. And once you have your cards and you think of a strategy, if you can play it in your head, it will 100% work in game, no random, no miss, I loved that.

You should try Midnight Suns.
To me it really did feel different. It has a lot of inspiration from Persona, with the social stats increasing your combat stats and abilities, the fact that there is no % chance of missing etc... It felt a lot more satisfying than regular tactical games for me.
However you have to accept the heavy amount of social interactions. I didn't mind it, but I know some people don't like it.

I did, and the tutorial had fun combat, but it was 90% jabbering that game. It was painful.

However as a similar type of combat to that i'd highly recommend the Fractured But whole to anyone who hasn't played it. I also recommend into the breach

but yeah the Xcom style, defensive walls and overwatch, % accuracy type games are getting a bit long in the tooth now.

The one that put me over the edge was metal slug tactics of all things. I was disappointed because of it being metal slug i thought they were really going to have some fun with it, but the combat was stock standard.

Yeah all the chat was divisive in Midnight Suns. Unfortunate because I think it plays beautifully.
What I'm surprised about is that people complain about it a lot in Midnight Suns, but Persona games are really popular and they have even WAY MORE chatting than Midnight Suns.

Don't get me wrong, I understand how someone can dislike that, in Persona 5 I sometimes I do think it's a bit too much, but the games are still incredibly popular.

I don't think it flopped because of the social interactions, probably more because of the lack of marketing I guess, and people at that time avoiding Marvel games after the release of Avengers (which also really hurt Guardians of The Galaxy, another great marvel game that flopped just like Midnight Suns).

They didn't bother me, but I can understand it.
However something to keep in mind is that these dialogues aren't "pointless", everything, and I mean absolutely EVERYTHING in this game, has a gameplay purpose.
Even petting your dog can increase your friendship with it and grant you new abilities in combats. I found it incredibly satisfying how everything in this game was connected, every mechanic is always complementing another, every different things are communicating. It leads to a very satisfying progression.

The difference is people go into Persona expecting a visual novel with RPG trappings. The series is a known quantity.

If instead you tell me I'm going to play Marvel XCOM, and half the game ends up being a plutonic dating simulator, I might be upset.

Plus the "Most P5 fans have never played the game" meme exists for a reason. A lot of the time people glaze that game solely for its aesthetics and cross-media representation.

Now what Story and what base building mechanics outside of turn based combat can they implement.
There is absolutely nothing that I am not excited about on this project.

So they’re basically relegated to Star Wars bullshit now?

Sure, that’s a very knowledgeable take. Let me add to that: it was Respawn’s decision to release the game when they did, which shows how much trust EA management places in the studio and Vince Zampella. Was the timing a mistake? Absolutely. But EA isn’t 100% at fault here.
On a broader note, studios should consider moving away from Tuesday releases and start launching on Fridays instead. The reason is that some people—whom I’d call “brain-dead weebs”—measure a game’s success purely by its Steam CCU (concurrent users). A Friday release typically drives higher CCU because more players are free to jump in over the weekend.
As for Titanfall 3, I do believe it will eventually happen. However, I’d wait until the next Battlefield releases and hits its peak—especially since Battlefield 6 looks like it’s poised for massive release.
Do you know what weeb means?

It looks ok, but the Galaxy of Heroes mobile looks better than this already (also not a bad game either tbh)

I wanna see CA's SW Total War game soon as well, Galactic Battlegrounds is a gem that many missed

I hope there is something new here, not just simplified XCOM with Star Wars theme. I think these games need some better progression system between the missions/fights.

Looks cool.
I just really hope they keep it focused on the combat.
I don't want to build "bonds" and shit in between missions. Take me to some home base menu where I can modify and upgrade my characters and then let me get straight into the next mission (maybe with a short cutscene from time to time).

Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds is your answer (one of the best RTS games from my childhood), basically a reskinned AOE

Unreal

I've played Galactic Battlegrounds back then! Good times. Although, it being essentially a reskin of Age 2 made me always go back to Age 2 proper, tbh. So I maybe played less of Galactic Battlegrounds than I should have. I hear there are some pretty big mods for it.
