Microsoft should've made the Oblivion Remaster an Xbox-only exclusive.

At least for a year or so. It doesn't have mod support anyway, and people would've bought the consoles in droves. Imo it's a lost opportunity for them.

EDIT: I see the memelicious responses coming in from fellow GAFers, but come on you can't deny it was an easy strategic move to grab a chunk of the console market.

Yes lock it behind a single platform that'll help with sales!

In all seriousness, the game is a massive success today because there is more than one way for people to play. This is a good thing and fuck exclusivity.

Thats what they should do if they were interested in selling consoles, but they are not anymore, they are interested in selling games. They are a 3rd party publisher now.

You're living in a distant past. You'll catch up one day.

MS didn't OK the purchase of half the games industry to make xbox great again, there was a different plan that involves making way more money than that ever could by being everywhere possible.

Your probably right.

Fuck I need to sleep....

MS doesn't give a shit about hardware sales anymore. Even if they made every game exclusive and Sony would only release more remasters until the end of the gen, PlayStation would still destroy Xbox.

They might have made it exclusive if they still gave a damn about Xbox consoles or the Xbox console userbase.

They have finally accepted their defeat and are only concerned about software money. They are a third-party publisher and would never exclude their biggest paying user base, i.e., PS5 users.

They would rather skip the Xbox version but wouldn't skip the PS5 version.

The entire existence of Nintendo is predicated on their exclusives. It's not delusional to say this.
Super different situation, Nintendo is a company that has a different weight especially in Japan their IPs are the top of the industry I really doubt a Remaster is going to sell xbox in droves, sadly it is the reality of going against Sony

This would only make sense in the context of a wider strategy where everything they produce, including Diablo and COD, remain exclusive. Pissing off millions of potential customers by randomly locking away one single title, lol

Imagine this scenario:

Phil Spencer appears on stage and looks at the camera, holds his gaze for a moment and says:

"I am not perfect, I am not your God or savior, I'm not CEO of gaming at Microsof, I'm just a gamer like you.... I WAKE UP EVERY MORNING like someone who has a terrible nightmare; sweating and with heart palpitations, a terrible question is always in my mind:

How do i reach 3 BILLION gamers, HOW do I GROW the Industry?. Then I remember... I AM your God, I AM your savior and every screen is an Xbox.... bitch

we're talking about a remaster of a 20 year old game. i mean, how many switches you figure link's awakening managed to sell?...

people are very happy to have access to the remake, but that's not necessarily the same thing as being willing to fork over hundreds of bucks just in order to play it, eh?...

The cons outweight the pros for this one because while Elder Scrolls the franchise is easily the biggest and best fantasy franchise and Oblivion Remaster is a great and fun game. It still the same game as the original but with improved graphics and other enhancements but not really a full blown AAA Remake which is why it's a remaster so it won't be a system seller.

You could say Elder Scrolls VI could be a system seller but at the end of the day the pros still outweight the cons cause the sales would be a lot higher if you sell to all three PC, PS5, and XBOX.

people would've bought the consoles in droves
Most people who give a shit about Oblivion play games on PC.

Also, It's always been stupid for 3rd party publishers to release console exclusives. It would have been stupid here for Microsoft, a 3rd party publisher, to release a game only on 1 system. Let alone the system with the smallest user base out of all the systems out there.

It would a be a stupid move since almost nobody on Xbox buys games that are on Gamepass. MS found out that "engagement" doesn't pay the bills, and they need actual sales to make money so it makes sense to have it on PS5 where it will sell.

Get a grip OP! Nobody is buying an Xbox to play a remaster of a 20 year old game. The graphics may look decent but underneath the fresh coat of paint it's the same game as 20 years ago which is very much outdated today.

This would make me sad. Also, dont think it would generate the numbers. They were smart to capitalize on hype and nostalgia.

Yes, game development costs peanuts and giving the game for almost nothing on gamepass is more than enough to have huge profit.

What a fabulous idea you had!

Too late for that now I feel. There's zero reason to buy an Xbox, adding one exclusive game, that's also a remaster, wouldn't change much.

If they want to sell consoles/hardware specifically they need to to change their entire strategy.

Microsoft have zero incentive of locking exclusives to a dead console. I'm sure they would love to have a thriving console where they can do that but thats not the case. I actually don't think there'll be anything even temporarily exclusive moving forward. Everything is gonna be day 1 on PS5.

Actually they did do it for that purpose (evident by them originally cancelling PS versions of everything). But it failed and the plan changed.

Coopetition game theory in economics. It can sometimes make sense for a company to remain an exclusive supplier to itself, if that can generate immense value and create a monopoly, but lacking those conditions a large company with multiple divisions is better served by acting as if one division is unrelated to another division. That means Microsoft putting Word on OSX instead of making it exclusive to Windows, Sony selling its TV panels and camera sensors to competitors, etc. More money to be made.

In Microsoft's case, they have a platform on life support and somewhere on the order of $100 billion invested in game studios. It makes very little sense at this point to keep their releases exclusive to Xbox.

Lmao. Teah lets just lock one of the most iconic rpgs in history behind a single platform in 2025 because "strategy" right?

Why? Microsoft will make a shedload of money out of this given seemingly the pent up demand and excitement at the moment across all platforms.

No-one would have bought a console for this, so may as well benefit from it while they can. I think Microsoft's new strategy is sound. They might choose one or two games to be exclusive or timed, but for the rest cash it in to make some money.

Ehhh I know what you're saying makes more sense as a macro-scale business strat for a giant corpo like M$. I made the post more as a thought experiment than anything else.

Also I've been awake for 28 hours for circumstances out of my control so brain is going poopoo a bit.
