Microsoft should've made the Oblivion Remaster an Xbox-only exclusive.

At least for a year or so. It doesn't have mod support anyway, and people would've bought the consoles in droves. Imo it's a lost opportunity for them.

EDIT: I see the memelicious responses coming in from fellow GAFers, but come on you can't deny it was an easy strategic move to grab a chunk of the console market.

But how would it make money?

Agreed, but the past 15 years have been nothing but "Xbox should've". I think pretty much everyone sees that xbox is done, I still think xbox 'could', but I don't think they ever will. They don't have a strong enough leader, and even if they did, too much bureaucratic nonsense, you'd need a dictator to fix xbox.

No, people would have not bought consoles in droves because of a remaster....like...what?

Honey Moon period in full force it seems.

Besides, Xbox was very clear that legacy franchises would remain on all platforms. If TES is not legacy then I don't know what is.

Xbox gave up on console sales.

They want to be on every ecosystem as possible. End goal is Game Pass on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch

If everything is an Xbox , they released they Game just on Xbox

If only they didn't focus on gamepass so much then this could've been a great console exclusive selling in the millions! Instead, it will just sell in the 10's of thousands with most playing the 1st 30 minutes or so of the game on gamepass, find it boring, then playing something else. Phil created this monster and reuined the Xbox console brand. It's on him and his team.

Exclusive should die.

Everyone should be included.
Why have multiple platforms then if they all offer the exact same experience and games then? No reason for competition then. We should just have one console in that case which will inevitably lead to a monopoly.

Just looking at the thread; most people are incapable of thinking beyond their immediate desires...

It happens with other media.

You don't get exclusive UHD Blu Ray films on Sony players, or exclusive music locked to Spotify.

Why should video games be any different?

This. When I want to watch a movie, I pick the best theater or my favorite platform to purchase it on at home. Why should I be forced to only be able to watch that film at an AMC theater? That only hurts the studio and raises prices on the consumer, thereby hurting sales further.

Competition will now force hardware companies to push hardware further and innovate. PS5 Pro will get better, maybe Xbox Next blows it away, then Valve or Apple can jump in and on and on.

And I can't help but think "what if" when it comes to Xbox console and all the games Microsoft is publishing. Could have some true Xbox exclusives made a difference for the console? I'd say probably, yeah.

They robbed themselves of that opportunity when Phil decided to fly too close to the sun and purchase Activision.

Microsoft has a team of these types:

If the expected profits from the sale of Xbox Series X consoles would exceed the expected profits from games sales to an install base of 75 million PlayStation 5 consoles, they would have made it exclusive. A times B times C equals X. If X is more profit, we don't make it exclusive.

That's true. That one acquisition dictated their entire strategy going forward.

Put the spotlight and huge amounts of pressure on a division that ordinarily would fly under the radar at Microsoft.

It put them in a position where they needed to start delivering in terms of revenues immediately, and that couldn't happen unless they started putting their games everywhere.

Cautionary tale of too much, too soon, when it comes to M&A spending sprees.

With day one gamepass release it would not do well sales wise like most other games on Xbox. PS5 owners will actually support and buy the game as they don't have a gamepass equivalent. More money for MS at the end of the day.

Nah.... San Dan Glokta San Dan Glokta is a good poster. We have had discussions before and I never got the sense he was a massive fan of any single platform.

I'd say it's doubtful. I mean it may be different if Xbox hadn't been putting out nothing but mediocre games the last decade, as well as put them on PC/GamePass day one. But unfortunately for them, they had.

The Activision and Bethesda acquisitions were too much, too late. If anything, I think it left a bad taste in gamers' mouths having MS buy up half the industry. After the announcement of those acquisitions the main narrative was those games were going to be Xbox exclusive. And yet, the Series' sales started to plummet.

No. This is a good game to show people what they could get on GamePass after they bought it and played the fuck out of it.

Streaming services like Disney +, Prime, Paramount, Netflix, etc all have exclusive content to give people a reason to subscribe to their services. IPhone and Android is another example. I don't necessarily have a problem with multiplatform games because it usually means more exposure and money, but my question is what would be the point in having multiple platforms if all games are everywhere?

IMO, exclusivity usually makes companies try harder with their creativity, products, entertainment, features, etc to draw consumers in. How is Microsoft supposed to sell an expensive next generation console when their exclusives will most likely be on other platforms? Aren't exclusives the main reason people are excited for Switch 2?

What's the upside?
The release wouldn't have been as hyped with positive impressions, because you would have salty people who couldn't play posting negative takes all over the internet, and it wouldn't have sold as much, because millions of Xbox gamers play through Gamepass.

It's a perfect release as it is. And it could very well end up as the GOTY, again.

It's doing well because it's not an exclusive. Xbox is moving into a post exclusives world. Activision and Bethesda first party titles didn't drive enough traffic when exclusive and they have to justify the costs, so you can forget about exclusives ever again

Microsoft is trying to become the Netflix subscription for gaming, and it's games are exclusive to Gamepass when it comes to subscriptions/streaming platforms. This is what they want to drive for the long-term

Streaming services are different. I don't need to buy Netflix hardware to watch Netflix. I can watch it on a variety of devices.

Think of PC gaming. I can buy laptops or PC parts from a number of manufacturers. I don't need to buy a Steamdeck to play games on Steam, it's just one of many options.

Microsoft will likely make hardware in the future, but it'll just be one of the ways you can play their games.

Sony have started releasing games on PC and even Nintendo hardware.

Nintendo are the odd ones out. Maybe they'll try and release older titles on PC soon. It depends if the Switch 2 is a success.

I kinda agree with the OP, this kind of « smaller scope » projects (aka a remake of an existing game at the end, relying on the original game's reputation to sell) should've been a good opportunity to have a system seller for Xbox

No. This is a good game to show people what they could get on GamePass after they bought it and played the fuck out of it.

What you're saying zero sense considering how long this game is and the fact that people often continue to play these kinds of titles for years after their release.

At this stage the only game that has a chance of shifting Xbox's in any kind of significant number if it was a true exclusive, ie., no PC release, would be the annual COD.

I could have got the game on Gamepass. I loved the original so bought it on the PS5. as I prefer the controller and console. Its a win-win for MS as they have made £60 from me.

With how Xbox has been doing, that would have been incredibly dumb to do, and its delusional to think a remaster of a mid game sandwiched between what are perceived as two "greats" would move the needle on consoles sold. They want to make money and money is made on the software. If they want to maximize profit on games in their current state they put it out to as many people as possible. MS did the smart thing here.

Its literally the equivalent to texture pack, its not a ground up remake, which would have attracted people. Just another lazy release quite frankly that too many people are giving a free pass YET AGAIN…

So every game gets decided on a case-by-case basis with a focus on short-term profits with no long term plan guiding anything whatsoever? I mean, it checks out

Valid points, but I honestly think the lack of exclusives is the primary reason XBOX hardware sales are so horrendous. There's a reason why the Switch even with it's antiquated hardware and age still sells really well. It was providing an experience that you can't get elsewhere.

I just went from seeing my PSN friend playing Forza to reading this. Have timelines collided?

No they wouldn't have bought Xbox in their droves.

That's part of the reason Xbox consoles aren't selling as well now. However, Microsoft decided to go multiplatform because the hardware business was already failing.

Microsoft have never made money on hardware, so for them it was an easy decision to release games first on PC, then on Nintendo and Sony systems.

Microsoft are still going to release hardware if rumors are to be believed, but it's unlikely to be a traditional console. More like a console/PC hybrid.

Agreed, and this is why we're far from a future without console exclusive games. The Switch 2 would need to come in well below sales expectations for Nintendo to release even some of their older titles on PC or other systems.

Sony are in the middle ground. Their consoles are selling well, but they still release select older titles on PC. Maybe this is the best balance for them.
