Sorry for the necro, but this seems like the best thread to get some answers.

I currently have both an Xbox Series X and a PS5 Pro (birthday gift from my wife — bless her), and I've been playing them on the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ monitor:
27", WQHD (2560x1440), IPS, 165Hz, 1ms, G-SYNC Compatible, HDR10, etc. (yeah, I just copy-pasted that from the specs).

Before this, I was gaming on a Sony X90H TV, but that thing was a huge disappointment. The local dimming doesn't work with VRR, so you have to pick between stuttery gameplay or a washed-out image. Major letdown.

Anyway, here's my question:

When I play Horizon Forbidden West on the PS5 Pro with this monitor, it's hands down the best-looking game I've ever seen — like, individual face hairs on characters level of detail. But then I boot up something like Oblivion Remastered on Series X, or Cyberpunk, and it looks like hot garbage by comparison. Helldivers 2 is somewhere in between.

So what's going on here?
Are these consoles downsampling from 4K to 1440p, and is that why Horizon looks so insanely good on this monitor? Or is it just that Horizon is an 4K outlier, and most other games this console generation just don't hold up when viewed on a monitor at close distance?

I'm considering switching to a 4K OLED monitor, but I'm wondering if there's really any benefit for current-gen consoles. Will it make a noticeable difference, or is 1440p basically the sweet spot for these consoles, especially if you're sitting close?

Would really appreciate any insight!

I'm also on a 1440p VRR monitor and I find it to be the sweet spot for modern consoles. Many games are in the 1440p range on performance modes so they runs at the native resolution which is great. When occasionally a game runs at 4k it's still great, you get supersampling which makes image quality look pristine. I don't think jumping to a 4k screen will be an upgrade by itself, probably the opposite, but OLED will certainly look better with the downside that 30fps games will feel even choppier and by some reports "unplayable" .

Console is downsampling from 4k to 1440p. Game could be 1440p internal resolution but it will still go to 4k and then downsampled to 1440p output. Horizon has one of the best image reconstruction techniques so far so no wonder it looks really good.

I got disc drive, looks like it's a new model that mentions Pro already. Maybe it will match console color, lol.

I have to apologize to T Three , he was right. Where I live (Poland) market was saturated few months after launch and now disc drives are everywhere with MSRP price. In january big ass retail stores were still scalping them...

Overall Pro is decent upgrade, I didn't expect mindblowing things. I planned to buy it few months from now (Q4, GTA6?) but decent deal persuaded me now.

I told you to get one, lol. It's only going to get better on Pro. The time to get one was at launch. Us launch proers will enjoy a huge part of the generation under this pro umbrella and are not subjected to all the jank of the OG ps5.

Every game that releases makes the pro better.

Remember when they said the pro wouldn't get support and now almost every game that comes out is pro enhanced, many with better fps than it has on vanilla ps5?

It's just so delicious. This was literally a great buy and Sony hatred screwed it up for a lot of you. Look at what XSX 2gb costs or Switch 2 costs vs this. If you have gone all this time and don't know what I'm saying would be true before this thing even came out, I don't know what to tell you. Get a few more years under your belt I guess, and wisdom will come in time. If you can't afford it that is another matter entirely but for those who could easily afford it but balked, you played yourself. If this poll was reran today approval would be even higher and will tick up with every banger that is best on Pro. The UE5 shakes(stuttering) that goes on on PC ports was just an added bonus for pro. We've also seen our first glimpses of corporatism peering into the PC space, dreaming of making it woke and planning for an all PC future where the current PC space is locked down, woke, and owned by Microsoft. No issues with UE5 on pro. Pro haters better just hope GTA gets delayed. Honestly, if this hadn't been one of Sony's worst software gens the pro would be the only legit place to play. Sony got lucky that MS fell apart but the industry got lucky the sony gaas push did too. If Sony was releasing banger after banger, what then? It would be a monopoly. Wow, I bet Sony is looking at this landscape and deeply regretting those pipeline mistakes. They could have ran away with it.

My pro just arrived. My delivery date was 9th of may so I don't understand, but whatever. I'm going to set it up now.

Any specific games I should check that are ps plus extra?

I own astro bot and gran turismo. Both last of us remakes and ghost of tsushima directors.

Think that's about it.

not pro max. that's just 4k 50fps no pssr. looks like shit.

I got the platinum last year for Stellar Blade(became one of my favourite games of all time). Got a pro and disc drive in December. Wanted to replay Stellar Blade, If you don't mind me asking. Which modes for the Pro are there in Stellar Blade and the difference? I can probably watch DF. But I just can't watch those bunch of creeps

PRO - PSSR 80fps. does great job at removing all the textures shimmering,
PRO MAX - just raw 4k at lower fps. I don't like it.

F mods. Play the game with normal costumes in main story. Otherwise you will ruin your experience running around naked in main quest

Believe out of those only Gran Turismo has a Pro patch.

Im sure I can dig some out. Didn't ghost of tsushima get one? I still have the dlc to do.

tempted by all 3 of them. I have them on gamespass, but the have ended up with decision paralysis between buying them on the pro, or playing for free on gamespass…and realising if I do buy them, I realllly need to cancel gamespass. Is the pro version quite noticeable? Will I regret playing on the series X? have any of them done anything worthwhile with the dualsense?

After those Xbone new prices Pro has become a better purchse option. Also think next gen ( PS6 , "xbone Series X2") will take more time now to be relased so the Pro Will be the Best console to play games the next 3 years at least.

Oblivion on the PRO has its advantages but still is a remaster no worth paying for it if You can get it on GP

The other two Yep think perform and looks so Much better on the PRO.

Owning GP and a PRO at the same time leads You to those kind of doubts, I cancelled GP because this Even before getting my PRO.

that reminds me.. I wanted to pay Signalis....

You should, it's one of the most profound gaming experiences I've have ever had. Fell in love with the game and replayed it many times. Wonder what the devs would accomplish, if they ever did a Silent Hill game. But their like 2 or 3 people so that will never happen. Signalis is really a crazy experience. You'll feel sadness, despair, pain etc. I can't describe my experience with Signalis. As I said earlier in my post, it's a really profound experience. I still think of it constantly and the soundtrack is top tier

Yah it's not been played I don't think since that Russian bioshock with the sexy robots. Even then it didn't save me anything as I donated towards a drone for Ukraine to offset giving money to Russia 🤣.

Thanks tho, I've grabbed Indiana on ps5

Picked up a PS5 Pro a couple of weeks ago, was skeptical but couldn't be happier with the purchase honestly.

It's a hell of a piece of hardware and the games look much better with the extra power.

I am satisfied quite a bit with this purchase.

Believe out of those only Gran Turismo has a Pro patch.

Gran Turismo 7, The Last of Us Part II Remastered and Astro Bot are all PS5 Pro enhanced. I can even see Astro Bot in the preview of that thread.

Really enjoying it. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black looks and plays awesome on it. Also thoroughly enjoyed Stella Blade, and I am currently playing Kiborg. Will jump back in Gran Turismo this summer.

I'm debating on getting one in case it goes to $900 but would rather wait for some rewards to come in + apparently ps6 is in 2026. If it was 500, easy call but 700+, it's tough.

It's nice, but just like the base PS5 we're not getting barely anything this generation that actually showcases the hardware significantly.

This generation has just been full of developers and publishers explaining away compromises in their games instead of making anything that feels innovative.

"You can have great graphics or you can have performance, but not both at the same time" should be the tagline of the PS5.

Unless someone is totally itching to get a new PS/Xbox after any price hikes, I'd reco just wait till next gen. It's already 2025 and tariffs surely wont last a few years.

If a gamer bites the bullet with a price hike, and then tariffs stop, the price of PS6/Xbox Y might be similar or cheaper than the price hiked system and you'll feel ripped off.

You get tons. In genera here we want fps more than shadows and the pro does an amazing job of games at 60 fps and look great

I don't think that's really the consensus, though. Most of the games feel like they started development on the PS4. They look really nice sometimes but we haven't gotten much of a "wow holy shit" since Demon's Souls.

I'd be fine if they focused on 40fps and leaned creatively into giving more impressive fidelity. I don't need 60fps for every game.

Ok. First day experiences. Loaded up gran turismo and couldn't really tell a difference. Guess it was always high res and 60 fps. Should I be playing on resolution or performance. I set to resolution.

Then I fired up astro bot and I started to feel a little disappointed. This looks the same too.

Started to feel a touch of buyers remorse.

Fired up returnal! Now we are talking. The image looks so crisp. 100% happy with that!

So overall I think im happy. I'll try more games today in-between expedition 33. I've got a full day of gaming today so I'm happy.

Don't know about the prices in different countries but, here in Pasta Land the Pro can be found for as low as 650 Eurodollars from 3rd party sellers/smaller shops.

Maybe this didn't sell as much and they want to clear out the remaining stock ? Don't know, either way, yeah, 650 Euros, wish I could have waited this time, and oh, the once impossible to find 120 Eurodollars disc drive add on that can be found easier nowadays for 80 Eurodollars just adds insult to injury G'dammit...

Demand for the Pro has certainly been slower in EU/MENA than in the US.

I actually got mine on a Turkish e-commerce website. It had like a %15-20 discount, the disc drive was discounted too lol.

i purchased my pro last week.
for me it was well worth the upgrade for some games i have.
and for future games Death Stranding 2 and GTA VI and so on.

Doing the trade and buy around launch was no-brainer territory. With trade-in prices going up on launch consoles and the Pro price holding for now, you're in dummy territory if you don't upgrade or get your Pro now.

I traded in my old PS5 a couple weeks ago and now have money to buy games for it. Got Indy, probably will pick up DS2 and maybe MGS3 Delta if it is good.

Also I think I am happier with it now that I have a modern TV.

And you're good until fall of '27 at the earliest and second half Playstation is just beginning. But yeah, the right TV is a must for the Pro especially

Recent price increases might push me to get one now but I still dont think positively of this upgrade in its current state. BUT if I get one soon and prices go up for base PS5 and Pro, I'll be able to sell my PS5 for nearly as much as I bought it for. Need the disc drive though...

Bojjjii! You did it?!? Glad you're enjoying it friend.

My biggest gripe with the pro is just that it's really up to the devs to support it. There's really not much of a reason Cyberpunk didn't get a pro patch for example.
Drop the resolution, toggle on a few ray tracing settings and throw on PSSR and it would have been a massive step up from base PS5.

Feels a bit anticlimactic having the extra power under the hood, but being at devs mercy to properly push those pixels.

Yeah, we are on a mercy of developers that sometimes do brilliant Pro versions and sometimes they just don't give a fuck.

But even basic dynamic resolution uplift and more stable performance is enough to justify it. Some PS5 games don't look much better than PS3 games when it comes to image quality...
